Description
0. N. BRAINERD.
BOX PASTENER. Patented July 28, 1885.
(No Model.)
WAW
Jfiventm x Z C. flf/M/MJ My W M/imw m NITED STATES ORRIN N. BRAINERD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTENER.
Application filed November 4, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN N. BRAINERD, of the city of St. Louis, in the State oflMissouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in BoX-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an eggbox with my improved fastening applied, the lid being removed from the box. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are enlarged detail Views of different parts. These figures will be more particularly mentioned in the body of the specification.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the box, B the lid, 0 cleats secured to the box, and D cleats secured to the lid, as usual. At one end of the box, secured to the oleat, is a springhook, I, adapted to engage over the oleat on the corresponding end of the lid, as shown in Fig. 4. This cleat on the lid is preferably recessed at J, forming an inclined sur face that causes the hook to be forced outward to engage over the oleat by simply pressing down on the lid. The upper edge of the oleat has a recess, L, to receive the end of the hook, or this recess may be made in the top just over the oleat, if desired. The lower part of the hook is preferably strengthened by a strap, M, that fits outside of it, and through which the'retaining screw passes. The strap preferably passes or projects under the box-oleat, as shown in Fig. 4. By the use of this strap the hook isnot liable to be broken where the screw passes through it.
The lid-cleats and N to receive a nail or pin, 0, to hold the fastening securely in place when extraordinary care is needed. On the other end of the box is a plate, P, with a hook on its upper end which projects outwardly and engages over the oleat on this end of the lid that has a recess, T, to receive it. The plate does not require to have any spring to it, as this end of the lid is put on first and drawn over against the box, and then as the other end of the lid is lowered into place the hook of the plate enters the recess T. In taking off the cover the spring-hook is pulled back, this end of the lid raised, and then the lid moved bodily away from the hooked plate P.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with the box A, having the oleat O, and the spring I, having its extremity bent at right angles, as described, the cover B, the oleat D, secured thereto, the chamfered notch J, cut in said oleat, and a recess or mortise, L, -for the reception of the end of the spring I, as set forth.
2. In combination with the box A, having the oleat O, and the spring I, having its extremity bent at right angles and perforated, as described, the lid B, having the oleat D, the chamfered notch J, cut in the side of said oleat D, the mortise L, cut in the top thereof, the perforations N, and the pin 0, as and for the purposes set forth.
OBRIN N. BRAINERD.
In presence of GEO. H. KNIGHT, SAML. KNIGHT.
