Description
0. E. BORGARELLO.
REVOLVI'NG SEAT 0F PIANO STOOLS.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 6,1917- Patented Mar. 2, 1920.

OCTAVIO EUGENIO BORGARELLO, OF BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA.
REVOLVING SEAT OF PIANO-STOOLS.
Application filed June 6, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OCTAVI'O EUGENIO BORGARELLO, a citizen of the Argentine Republic, a mechanic, residing at Calle Maipii G71, Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Revolving Seats of Piano-Stools and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the means for retaining in position the revolving seats used in connection with piano stools and the like, for the purpose of providing a more comfortable seat than that afforded by the common rigid seats.
When playing piano and more particularly, when controlling the registers of antomatic pianos or pianolas, it is necessary to provide for certain freedom for moving the legs, in order to be able to conveniently operate the pedals.
For such purpose, common piano stools are unsuitable because of the rigidity of their seat which though mounted to revolve for adjusting its height, interferes at its edges with the free movement of the legs, and while not preventing the same, notwithstanding causes certain uncomfortable pressures.
The above deficiencies are most to be observed when a common piano stool is used for playing automatic pianos and pianolas, owing to the continuous efforts and movements which necessarily are to be performed with the legs.
Owing to these facts, and particularly in connection with the above mentioned instruments, stools of elongated shape and unalterab-le height are sold, and though the feature of the fixed height rather is a drawback, they offer the advantage of having a slightly inclined seat, owing to which the edge of the same causes no discomfort.
Such inclined position of the seat, there fore, is necessary for the greater comfort of the performer, but heretofore no stool with revolving seat has been constructed whose seat might be inclined at will.
My present invention has for its object to provide means in a stool with revolving seat, for obtaining the said advantage, which consist in inserting between the seat and the spindle, a strong hinge, conveniently secured to both parts and provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
Serial No. 173,108.
with means which allow of retaining the seat at different degrees of inclination.
In order to facilitate the clear understanding of this description, illustrative drawings have been annexed thereto, in which Figure 1 shows an elevation of the improved stool, in accordance with this invention, with the seat in a slightly inclined position.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the hinge or joint of the seat.
In said drawings, 1 indicates the central pillar or column of the stool which supports the common spindle :2. To the upper end of the spindle is secured by heat the bracket 3 to which is rigidly affixed the lower wing 4- 0f the hinge. To the upper wing 5 of the same is secured the seat 6 and both parts or wings are retained together by means of the usual stud or pin 7. To the outer part of the wing plate 5 is connected the retention lever 8', by means of a stud 9, and a spring 10, forming part of the said stud, acts against said lever so as to cause the toothed extension 11, formed on the same, to engage with the edge of the lower wing plate 4. The end of the said toothed extension is provided with an elongated tooth or nose 12 which, when the hinge reaches its maximum degree of inclination, abuts against the edge of the wing plate 4, thereby preventing the seat from being entirely tilted over.
A stop 13 serves to limit the opening motion of the lever 8 and. prevents its toothed extension 11 from separating more than is necessary when it is desired to incline the seat or to return the same to its horizontal position.
It will be evident that the retention device used for retaining the hinge at the desired degree of inclination may be varied as deemed convenient, without departing from the scope or limits of this invention, as this latter substantially consists in the interposition of the hinge between the spindle and the seat and for that purpose any suitable obstruction may be employed, which by being inserted between the two hinge plates or wings, will prevent the said plates from joining, thereby maintaining the seat at the desired degree of incline.
In the retention device shown in the drawings, it will be sufficient to swing the free endof the lever 8 inwardly in order to cause its toothed extension 11 to relieve the edge of the hinge plate t, whereby the seat may be inclined. Thereupon, the lever is set free and owing to the'pressuremxerted by the spring 10, said extension 11 will approach the edge of the hinge plate et till the tooth proportionate to the degree of incline which it is desired to obtain, engages with the said edge.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stool or chair, the combination of a seat; means for adjusting said seat vertically, comprising a threaded spindle; means, comprising a hinge, connecting said seat to the upper end of said spindle, for inclining said seat at various degrees relative to the horizontal; a locking member carried by said seat and movable to and from operative position; a part carried by said spindle, adapted to be engaged by said locking member when the latter is in operative position; means normally to maintain said locking member in operative position to lock the seat in the inclined position to which it has been adjusted; and means for moving said locking member from operative position to enable the inclination of the seat to be varied, or movement of the seat from horizontal to inclined position, or vice versa.
2. In a stool or chair, the combination of a seat; means for adjusting said seat vertically, comprising a spindle; means compris ing a hinge, connecting said seat to the up per end of said spindle, for inclining said seat at various degrees vertically to the horizontal; a rack member carried by said seat, and movable to and from operative position; a part carried by said spindle, adapted to be engaged by the teeth of said rack when the latter is in operative position; means normally to maintain said rack in operative position to lock the seat in the inclined position to which it has been adjusted; and means for moving said rack from operative position to enable the inclination of the seat to be varied, or movement of the seat from horizontal to inclined position, or vice versa.
