INVENTORQ. T.-/Z Van fi dfes n'r name. I
IRVING N. VAN SIGKLEQ, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BEGUM-HOLDER.
1,332,6l8ii.
Application filed. January 1 5., 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRVING N. VAN SrcKLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, State of OOIIHQCtlClll), have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a novel construction of devices for holding brooms and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature of simple construction and having spring gripping means for engaging the broom handle and holding the broom suspended against a wall or other support.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing m invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the two members of the device separated.
Fig. 3 is afront view of the device.
Fig. l is a side view.
Tn these views, 1 indicates the stationary member of the device. This member consists of the base 2, which is provided with the slots 3, adapted to receive screws or the like for supporting the device against a wall or other support. An arm 4: extends at right angles from said base, midway of its ends. Adjacent the base the arm is provided with an enlarged part, which on one side is provided with a cup shaped socket 5. The rest of the arm is slightly tapered and is curved to form the jaw 6. At its end this jaw is formed with the angle flange 7. At the outer end of the enlargement, slightly to one side of the junction of the jaw therewith, a pointed projection 8 is formed which is adapted to enter the handle of the broom to prevent the same from slipping through the device. The flange of the cup shaped socket, at its outer edge is cut away to provide a slot 10 and adjacent the base said flange is entirely cut away to form a groove 9. A hole 11 is formed in the bottom of the socket Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 271,002.
to receive the pivot pin 12 which connects the movable jaw to the stationary part. This movable jaw 13 has its outer part made similar to the stationary paw. The inner end thereof is enlarged as at 14: and this enlargement is connected with the jaw part by the on set portion 15. By this means when the enlargement is seated on the socket jaw the two jaws will lie in the same plane. The enlargement is provided with a hole 16 to re ceive the pivot pin and said enlargement is provided with an extension 17, the end of which is adapted to contact with the base to form a stop to limit the closing movement of the jaw. The aw is normally held in closed position by means of the coil spring 18, which is seated in the socket around the tubul ar projection 19, extending inwardly from the enlargement 14, the pivot pin passing through this projection. One end of the coil spring passes through the groove and engages with the base while the other end passes through the slot and engages the ofi'- set part of the movable member.
After the device has been secured tothe wall the broom handle may be placed between the jaws by simply placing the handle against the outer ends of the angle flanges and pressing upon the handle to force the movable jaw open. This will permit the handle to pass between the jaws and as it strikes the pointed projection said projection will enter the same and thus firmly hold the handle against slipping. This projection and the spring pressed jaw will hold the broom in suspended position.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combinationand arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A broom holder comprising a base, a stationary arm extending from the base and having an enlarged part adjacent to the base and the other part being curved to form a jaw, said enlarged part having a socket formed on one side thereof, a movable arm having an enlarged part resting on said socket and having its outer part curved to form a jaw, a tubular rojection on said enlarged part entering tile socket, a pivot pin passing through saiclenlargecl part, the projection and the socket aim a spring in said socket and engaging the movable arm.
A broom holder comprising a base, a stationary arin extending at right angles from the base and having; an enlarged part outer pan oinr'vecl to form a jaw, a mbular projection on the enlarged part entering the a clzen a PiYOL' pin passing through said projection and enlarge-cl part the stationai'" arm eonneet the parts together, a spring in said socket having its ends engaging the recesses and one end engaging a part of the novable aW, a stop on said movable arm for ging the base and the extremities of said jaws diverging for engagement by the moon.
In testimony whereoil I affix my signature.
