COMBINED DESK BIJOTTER-PAD ANI) FILE.
To all whom t may concern Be it known'thatI, ERNEST E. MoMUL'- LEN, a citizen of the United States, andresiding in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in CombinedDesk Blotter-Pads and Files, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of combined desk blotter pads and files designed to afford both a blotter pad and an auxiliary attached memoranda file for the purpose of facilitating the Work of an oiiice man. The principal object of my invention is to afford such combination in a simple, practical and efficient form of construction. Other objects will appear in the course of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device showing the memoranda file closed; Fig. 2, a sectional plan view showing the memoranda le open; Fig. 3, a section showing the method of attachment of the memoranda file to the desk blotter pad; Fig. 4, a cross section on line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the' several views. f
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A represents the desk blotter pad as a whole; B represents the memoranda file as a whole; the desk blotter pad A is made up of the back 1, the corner sleeves 4 xedly attached to the base 1 from their under sides, and a plurality of blotters as shown at 5 and 6 slipped into said corner sleeves. This desk blotter pad as such is an old device and no patentable feature is claimed in respect thereof standing alone, but only in combination with my memoranda file. `In my invention the back 1 of said desk blotter pad is extended to any one of the four sides thereof, and this extension with its pockets and folds, as will be now described, constitutes my improvement in a memoranda file indicated by B in combination with said desk blotter pad A.
In carrying out my invention, the back 1 of said desk blotter pad vis extended to either the right, the left, the top or the bottom of said pad as shown at 7. This extension 7 is formed with a central longitudinal fold along the line 8-8, so that the outer half 9 may be folded down upon the inner half 10. and 10 are in turn provided with oppositely disposed pockets 11 and 12, so arranged and 'dis' osed thatthe open sides of these two Apoc vvlinie 8-8, so that when the memoranda Iile ets lie adj acenty to each other along the vB is in open position, the pocket 11 opens toward the left hand, while the pocket 12 opens toward the right hand. The upper surface 13 of the pocket 12 may be made of any suitable material as cloth, or leather, but the upper surface 14 of the pocket 11, when the file B is in open position, should be made of any transparent or translucent material such as Celluloid.
In carrying out my invention, I further provide a memoranda pad 15 made up of a stiff base 16 and a plurality of leaves of suitable length and width, all bound together on theright hand edge. The leaves of this momoranda pad are divided oii" into spaces and marked successively one below the other to represent the days of the week from Sunday to Saturday. To mount the memoranda pad 15, the base 16 thereof is slipped within the pocket 12, which holds said memoranda iile in substantially Xed relation. Said memoranda pad 15 is cut sufficiently short to leave room for a calendar 17 to be pasted on to the upper surface 13 of the pocket 12 immediately below said memoranda pad 15. By providing a transparent surface 14 for the pocket 11, any temporary or transient data, such as a telephone directory 18, or a time table 19, etc., may be inserted in said pocket 11, whereby such data is revealed through said transparent surface 14 of said pocket 11, and may be readily referred to.
Finally, I provide the snap buttons 2() and 21 adapted to hold the memoranda file in closed position when not in use.
It will be seen that I have here provided a combined desk blotter pad and memoranda le adapted to hold for ready reference a weekly memoranda file, a calendar, and a temporary repository for transient data.
While I have herein described a certain specific construction for my said invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct the same to meet practical requirements.
What I claim to be new and patentable is:
1. In combination with a desk blotter pad, an outer pocket having a depression beyond the edge of the blotter pad, an inner pocket disposed adjacent the outer pocket with its edge extending beyond that of the said blotter pad and terminating adjacent to the inner edge of the depression in the outer pocket, and fastening means holding the said pockets in closed position.
2. The combination of a blotter pad having its back extended beyond the blotter pad and provided in the edge of the blotter pad Aat the said extension with a recess formed in the lower face of the said blotter pad, a flexible extension member having its inner portion arranged upon the extended portion of the back of the blotter pad, said flexible extension member being provided with a Adepreseion locatedbeyond the edge of the extended back, an inner pocket arranged upon the inner portion of the said flexible member and having its mouth located at the edge of the extended back, said inner pocket 20 depression, and fastening means forseeuring 25 the pockets in closed position. .Y
