Description

C. L. BUTLER.
Improvement in Adjustable Jaws for Vises.
N0. 133,198, Patented Nov.19,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CALVIN L. BUTLER, OF- GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND AUSTIN DE WOLF, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE JAWS FOR VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,198, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, UALVIN L. BUTLER, of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Jaws for Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement in operative position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clamp-plate reversed.
My invention relates to that class of vises which are constructed to adapt or adjust the jaws to other than objects having parallel sides; and it consists in a false jaw hinged to a clamp and arranged to be attached to either jaw of an ordinary parallel vise, so that, when a tapering or other irregularly-shaped body is placed between said jaws, it will be securely griped and held.
That others may fully understand my invention, I will particularly describe it.
A A are the jaws of an ordinary parallel vise. B is the false or adjustable jaw, hinged at its center to the clamp-plate a, so that said jaw B may incline either to the right or the left, as the figure of the interposed body may require. The clamp-plate O is bent backward at its ends to inclose the ends 0 of the visejaw to which it may be applied, and the bind ing-screw D retains it firmly in place. The connecting-hinge E between the false jaw B and clamp-plate 0 may be a simple two-part joint, but should be fitted all around, so that strain will not come upon the pin. The back of plate O may be made concave, except in the center-back of the hinge-joint above mentioned, to insure a solid bearing behind said joint.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new is- 1. The adjustable jaw B combined with the backing-plate G, all constructed and arranged as described, to be clamped to the vise-jaw A, as set forth.
2. In combination with the adjustable jaw B, the backing-plate 0, made concave on the back side, except at the center, so as to give 7 a firm foundation for the joint E, as set forth.
CALVIN L. BUTLER.
In presence of-- AUsTIN DE WOLF, J. F. BRIDGES.
