" l "HANDLE .AND
To all whom it may concern: j
vBe it known that I, JAsrEn CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Bonita, in the parish of Morehouse and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle and Implement Couplings, of which thefollowing is Y tical in construction, and may be manufactured for a simallcost and sold at a yreason#` ing tothe handle.. i
a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings. f Y. f
This invention relates to the art of farming` implements and particularly toa hoe or rake construction including an improved fastening device, for detachably connecting various farming tools or implements to a common handle, in other words, to provide i a handle and means thereon., common Vto various farming tools or implements, whereby a detachable connection maybe afforded between the handle and any one of the tools or implements.
The invention aims to this kind, which is simple, eiicient and pracable profit. i g The invention further aims toprovide a fastening of this general `character .including. sliding. means carried by the handle,-for actuating` the yspring ,fasteningg'memben whereby the handle may be detached easily and quickly. f y
fIt is to be noted as a yfurther aim of the invention that by simply inserting theinetal `incased tapered end of the handle into the correspondingly shaped socket of the externk sionof the hoe, the hoe may be easily and quickly connected, alug carried bya spring member on the` socketed extension., of the hoe'will readily engage a shoulder'atone end of a vdepression in the casing covered extremity of the handle, to rigidly secure the hoe to the handle...y i v The invention further vaims to provide means formed integral with the casing of the endof the handle, to be depressed into a recess of the wood handle, to Vholdthe' cas- While the design andconstruction present v.illustrated andsetv forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a resultpfa reduction of the Vinvention to a morepractical form lfor commercial purposes, .the .in-f

and combination of fparts, nas will be hereinafter'set forth, shown in the drawings and I claimed. l
In the drawings: l
. e The invention comprises furth'erfeatures l Figure 1- is a perspective'fview'showing the extension cf a hoe connected' to awood handle- 'i v .Fig `2 is a longitudinal sectionalview on i line 2-2 of Fig. 1. .v
Fig. Billustrates plan views of the wood-v handle and a rake, showing the extension of the-rake disconnected from the casingv cov- Fig. 4 is avdetail view 'of the casing to be carried by the wood handle, showing the wall ofthe casing before it is depressed in Vfull lines andshowing the depression in dotted lines, after the, casing has .beenV vde-V pressed.
Fig. f5i'is a sectional view of the connectionv between the socket extension of a rake and a ywood handle, illustratingthe slide eliminated.l v' i .v ,5'
. ,Referring tothe drawings 1v designates thev wood handle, which -mayfbeo-f any suitable length and constructed ofany suitable material, Vplferably wood.. One end of this handlefis vtapered as shown at 2, and
3 denotes a i conical casing orl shelll telescopicall-ytting the tapered end 2 of the i handle. The tapered end ofthe handleis providedwith a depressione, and this depression .4 -is engaged by an elongated protuberance, which is caused tobe constructed by depressing the wall ofthe casing 3. Owing, to this protuberance 5 being formed 4in this manner a .depression 6 isformed on vthe outerjface of thecasing 3. A lug7 V.is .struck up fromvthe bottom of the depression ory protubera'ncel and is designed to be enkriveted` or otherwise secured. at 10.*fin fan elongated recessll of the conical hollow exblade 13,0r of a rake.,
.tension .12- of theV hoe 14 as. shown in Fig. 3. The projection 8 "extends through an openinglyin the wall of the hollow extension 12,7.and` when-the casing lined tapered extremity of a* handle `ment of the extension ofthe hoe frOIIirthe handle. By vmounting' the `spring in'` the -gaged by Ythe projection 8, which is carried n by a leaf springv9.,v This leaf spring isv yis insertedV the socket 16 of the-extension y '12, the projection 8 will camoverthe lug?,
`and sol engagethe lug as to, prevent detach-j` depresseil- .1 1 and thereby rendering :the

outer face of the spring flush With the outer surface of the extension, Weeds and thelike or other foreignmatter are prevented from 1 becoming entangled between Vthe spring Aand j 5 the outer Wall of the extension `12. Further`v more, by so countersinhing theleaf spring, 1t ispr'ev'ented from engaging lan obstacle,
which Would Wrench or otherwise injure'the Aspring. AMounted in the depression is a l slide 17. This slide has an elongated slot 18,.
VWhich receives screwsl), `which are `threaded intoA the bottom of the depression,v thereby holding the silde in place. These V-s'creivs act to limit the slide in its movements in '71e either daemon; -oneeend ef the ende hee jection'2'2is grasped and the slide moved in e the dir'eeti'on'ofthe projection 8. vThe tivo bevelsf` 20and 21 Will coact, and itisobvious that the 'bevel 20 will cam under Vthe proe jectifo'n '8, forcing the leaf spring outwardly, until the end of the lug 8 rides uponl the sun ac 'of the enlargement 23 lof the 'slide to a *position asvindicatedat 24, after which the eirtensioiiv 12 as a Whole/may be removed.
It is alsoto be noted that when conneting theextension- 12 tov the casing covered taen Perea `enal of the hnndle, the bevel a1 win c'ain over the surface 25 of thelug 7, until the projection 8 may engage behind the end of thek lug. It is to vbe noted that by the protuberance engaging'the elongated recess '40 of the tapered endof'vthe v'voodj'handle, theV easing s' ie' heid inpeeinien en the nnndie,
in sch'ivi'se as to not only prevent longitdinal' noyemnt of 'thefcavsing 3,'butalso to prfeientA lateral rotation thereof, As shov'vn in Fig. 5' a rake is illustrated, disclosing the fact that most any kind of implmenter tool halving'a Socket eX# Y tension 12 o fthe'general character as shown maybe connected to the handle.V Itis ob-" vios that the lslide may be ofiany siiitab'le length.' Forv instance, 'the [end carryingV " linger piece 2,2 may eXtend vtoward andjbe l wpeeieiened adjacent the upper endef the handlafso that the user m'ayfeasilyfmanipl'i- 55 finte/the slide, wiznentneeehing the other e endof thehandle. e e
'The invention havingy been set forth, what is claimedas nevv and useful is;
. l; The combination 'vvith a handle meni- V having a tapered end provided Withfan elongated moese, of: a tapere'dhollow casing etang said tapered' end ef theA handle and peviiaed with 'nnv elongated pretnberenee, whiehis' lfo'eedA by depressing the Y wall of j es faire te engage-the elonjgnteaef v4e. :Thev combination ivith aha-ndle'meniber 125 Y vhaving casing covered ndr'and anelo-- gated depression formed inthe casing' covered end provided vvith an abutmnt,'of Vimplement provided with a socket extension v' y1,331,306 ,Y y
