" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO PALM, JR., OF RAHVTAY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE PALM BROTHERS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., 'A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
VDECALCOMANIA.
Application filedNovember 26, 1919. Serial No. 340,720.
I To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that'I, Orro PALM, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decalcomanias, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to decalcomanias, and has particular reference to decalcomania stripes or borders upon which are provided a plurality of alined figures or designs, the object of the invention bemg to form a decalcomania stripe of thlscharacter in such manner that the designs or figures when transferred may be placed n relatively angular or curved relationshlp with respect to each other, so that the decalcomania may be effectively employed for the purpose of decorating angled or curved surfaces as well as for straight designs. I 4
Straight decalcomania stripings or borders that have been used for years in decalcomania manufacture have only been of such .form as to be capable of being usedpin the transfer of their designs, upon or in perfectly straight lines, whereas stripings 0r borders adapted for curves, angles ,or corners have been made and manufactured so as to conform to the exact shapes of angles, curves or corners in order to make them fit and conform to such conditions.
' By the present invention a perfectly straight border or striping may be used as 35' a straight border or striping, and the added functions being accomplished by cutting the decalcomania in accordance with guide or cutting lines provided upon the pattern surface of the decalcomanias, whereby the latter may be longitudinally. flexed or distorted so thattheir designs may be so placed upon a surface as to permit of their angular or curved disposition thereon.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a decalcomania border or striping having provided thereon printing and pattern surfaces, the pattern surface being formed with cutting lines of triangular configuration, the apices of which are so disposed as to project into the interstices formed between the alined designs or figures on printing surfaces, whereby upon the removal of the material defined by at least certain of said lines, said striping or border may be longitudinally twisted to assume any desired position in order that the deslgns or figures may be imparted to a surface in straight, angular or curved relationship.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing the pattern surface with a plurality of longitudinally extending cen-v trally disposed lines upon the outer of which the apices of the triangular cutting line terminate, said central lines being so disposed that when the material defined by the triangular cutting lines is removed, said central lines will serve to define a bonding medium for retaining the stripe as a whole together and yet to permit of the desired flexing of the same.
For a further understanding of the invention,-reference is to be had to the following description, and to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure -1 illustrates the printing surface of a decalcomania border or striping, which is formed in accordance with the principles of the invention,
Fig. 2 represents the reference or pattern surface of the decalcomania and discloses more particularly the cutting line arrangement,
Fig. 3 illustrates the decalcomania when portions defined by the cutting lines have been removed, so that said decalcomania may be flexed to permit the designs thereof to be transferred in a relatively curved manner,
Fig. 4 is a view'showing the application of the designs or figures when the decalcomania is out in accordance with the showing set forth in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a View showing another manner for cutting decalcornania to permit the designs thereof to be transferred in a relatively angular manner.
Similar characters of reference denote like and corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring more particularly to the details of the invention, use is made of a decalcomania border or striping which is designated in its entirety by the numeral 1. This 'decalcomania consists of a printing surface 2 upon which are transferablymounted a plurality of longitudinally alined figures or desi s 3 of any suitable configuration, and it W111 be understood that these designs may be applied and transferred to any suitable article or surface in the usual manner. In this instance the decalcomania has its opposite side formed with a pattern surface 4, upon which are provided fac-simile outlines 5 ofthe designs 3 provided upon the printing. surface. The construction thus described is that which has been used in the past for the purpose of printing in stralght lines, however, it has hitherto been impossible to employ such decalcomanias for the purpose of printing the designs in a relatively curved or angular manner, such designs in the past having been printed origi-. nally in the relatively curved or angular manner in which they were adapted to be placed upon the surface designed for their reception. However, through the provision of the features of'the present invention, it is possible to employ straight decalcomania stripes not only for the purpose of producing straight designs but also of such construction as to be capable of accurately and easily producing the designs in a curved or angular manner and by this construction to enable a manufacturer and the trade at large to materially reduce varieties of forms in stock and to generally standardize the production of borders or stripings.
To this end, I provide the surface 4: with a plurality of centrally disposed longitudinally extending lines 6, which extend directly across the center portions of the designs 5, and which define as it will be'later set forth, a bonding medium for the designs 3. In addition 'to the lines 6 use is made of a plurality of cutting lines 7 which define isosceles triangles, or they may be of other desirable configuration. The bases of the triangular wedges 8, defined by the line 7, are disposed along the outer marginal edges 9 of. the decalcomania, while the apices thereof "protrude between the interstices formed between the designs 3 or 5 and ter minate upon the outer of the central lines 5. Other laterally extending lines 10 divide the Wedges 8 into right angle triangles, and
may be, longitudinally distorted in the curved and flexed manner clearly set forth in Fig. 3, so that when the designs 3 are transferred the same will be positioned upon a surface in the curved manner disclosed in Fig. 4, By this construction it will be apparent that a straight border or striping may be so cut as to permit of the angular or curved disposition of the transfer designs, and the construction will thus eliminate the necessity of printing the designs initially in the desired curved manner. Also, as shown in Fig. 5, the designs may be transferred in an angular manner. This may be accomplished by removing wedges 8 from both of the edges or sides of a stripe 1, and in slitting the stripe laterally at positions opposite to the removed wedges. Obviously, this process will permit a border or striping to be angularly bent throughout its length so that the desired angular arrangement of the figures or designs 3 may be easily and positively efiected.
It will be furthermore noticed that the cutting lines 7 for cutting the wedges or triangles and slits formed in the sheets, do not extend all the way across the border, but on the contrary only to the horizontal lines 6 which lie across the center of the border. The object of the lines 6 being to hold the entire border together in one piece during the transferring operation, so that the whole border may be transferred in one continuous piece or section in either a 1 straight or curved manner. The invention 'is particularly applicable in the printing of decalcomania stripings or borders upon carrlages, wagon and automobile bodies, slelghs,
carts and other machinery having curved these lines 10 are so disposed as to extend.
, transferred in the curved manner disclosed in Fig. 4. This is accomplished by removing the wedges formed along the upper edge of the stripe, and these wedges are removed by cutting the stripes along the cutting lines 7 so that the material of said stripe may be removed in a V shape manner between the designs. Then, the lower edges of said stripe are slitted along the lateral lines 10 so that the desired flexibility may be imparted to the stripe 1. Manifestly, by removing the upper edges and in providing oppositely disposed slitted portions, the stripe as a whole panels where straight borders and stripings will not answer hence, by cutting the straight border according to the guide outlines, any angle or curved border may be produced. Of course it will be apparent that' the principles of this invention may be differently carried out from the specific form described, for example the cutting lines may be provided on the printing surface, if desired, instead of on the pattern surface, or that it is not necessary to adhere to the triangular outline shown in removing material from the decalcomania, as manifestly other configurations may be removed and the same result accomplished.
I claim:
1. A decalcomania comprising a printing surface and a pattern surface, said pattern surface bearing outlines representing the detween the design outlines thereof, whereby I upon the removal of material defined by at least certain of said cutting lines said decalcomania may be flexed to permit its desaid decalcomania and located contiguous to signs to be transferred in a relatively angular or curved manner 2. A decalcomania of stripe formation formed to comprise a printing surface, a plurality of designs provided upon said surface, and cutting lines located between said designs and by means of which material may be removed from the decalcomania to permit the latter to assume flexed positions, whereby the designs thereof may be transferred in a relatively angular or curved manner. I
3. A decalcomania having a printing surface upon which is provided an elongated design, and cutting indicia provided upon said design so as to extend into the marginal interstices thereof, whereby upon the removal of desired portions of the decalcomania defined by said indicia said decalcomania may be bent to permit its design to be transferred in a relatively angular or curved manner.
4. A decalcomania stripe comprising a printing surface, a plurality of alined de signs provided upon said surface, cutting lines defining triangular wedges disposed between said designs, whereby upon the removal of-at least certain of said wedges, said decalcomania may be longitudinally distorted' to permit said designs to be transferred in a relatively curved or angular manner.
5. A decalcomania border comprising a printing surface bearing a plurality of alined transferrable figures, a pattern surface disposed on the opposite side of said decalcomania, said pattern surface bearing outlinerepresentations of the figure upon said printing surface, longitudinally extending lines arranged longitudinally and centrally of said border, and cutting lines disposed between figure outlines upon said pattern surface said cutting lines being of triangular configuration and having their apices terminated adjacent to said longitudinally extending lines, said cutting lines serving to permit said border to be cut in such manner as to permit of its longitudinal distortion In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
