To all 'whom it may'concew:
e it known'that I, MICAJAH B. HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVestminster, in the County of Oconee and State of South Carolina, have invented new i and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the' following is a specification. I
"This invention relates to plows and it has particular reference to plows in which the 'blade carrying standard is pivotallymounted on the beam so as to be capable of being angularly adjusted with respect to the beam.
The invention has for its object to provide a device of simple and improved construction whereby the'standard may be angularly adjusted and securely retained or locked in various adjusted positions. r a With these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature ofthe invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved Construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will'be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed 'out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein eXhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

The standard 15 which is of the well known U-shaped or bifurcated type is pivotally mounted on the plow beam 16 by means of a bolt or pivot member 17 the standard being provided with forwardly extending arms 18 having terminal checks 19, provided with a row of perforations 20 arranged in vertical series for the passage of transverse connecting bolts or pivot members.
Secured upon and extending outwardly from the beam 16 isa rack bar 22 the toothed edge of which faces in a rearward direction.

While this rack bar may be constructed and secured invarious ways it 'is preferred to 'form the same as a part of a casting which also includes a base or foot-piece 23, the same being apertured for the passage of fastening members such as screws 24:. By this construction the rack bar may be secured on the plow beam without materially weakening the latter which is an important consideration.
Pivotally connected with the checks 19 by means of'bolts or connecting members 25 is a yoke 26 which extends upwardly, strad dlng the beam, said yoke being so arranged and'- proportioned that the bridge portion t'hereof may engage in one of the notches 27 V of the rack bar 22. A coiled spring 28 connects the yoke 26 with the beam 16, the' tension of said spring being eXerted to swing the' yoke in the direction of the rack bar for engagement 'therewith. Riveted upon or *otherwise'suitably connected with the yoke 26 is thehandle 29 whereby the yoke may be Conveniently retracted from engagement with the rack bar against the tension of the spring 28.
It will be readily seen that when the yoke 26 is disengaged from the rack bar 22, the standard 15 and the beam 16 may be relatively moved about the axis of the pivot member 17, thus enabling any desired angular adjustment of the standard with respect to the beam to be efl'ected. When the desired adjustment has been made and the operator releases the handle 29, the yoke, under the tension of the spring 28 will be moved in engagement with the rack bar and the parts will thus be securely held in the desired adjusted position.
It will be observed that the yoke 26 which straddles the beam not only constitutes what may be termed a dog for engagement with .the rack bar, the said bar constituting also a brace or connecting member for the forwardly extending arms of the standard, reinforcing the same as against lateral or outward displacement, enabling the arms of the standard to be made lighter and less expensive than would otherwise be the case. It will also be noticed that the limbs of the yoke are to be of such a length as to enable the said yoke to be adjusted with respect to thecheeks 19 having the rows of perforations 20, raising or lowering the yoke with respect to the checks, and thereby materially increasing the range of adjustment.
Having thus described the invention,\v11at is claimed as new is:
l. A ploW beam, a standard pivoted thereon and having a fonwardly extending arm provided With a cheek piece having a vertical series of apertures, a rack bar extending npwardly froni the 'ploW beam, a raek v engagng member pivotally connected With the cheek, and a springconnecting the raok engaging menrber With the ploW beam to force it in the direction of the rack.
2. A low beam, a standard pivoted ther on and having' forwardly extending; arms provided With cheeks adjacen t to the side faces of the bea-m, a rack bar extendingiipwardly from the beani, a yoke pvotally connected With the cheeks, said yoke straddling the bean and engagingthe rack bar, and a spring" Whereby the yoke is forced in the direction of the rack bar.
