UNITE STATES fPA'rE N T OFFICE WILLIAM J. SMITH, on MOORE, MONTANA TRASH-CLEARER ATTACHMENT FOR- GULTTVATORS Application filed March 19,1928. Serial No. 262,971.
The present invention relates to a duck foot trated herein for thepurpose of exemplifying cultivator cleaner and is a mechanical device the utility of my improved structural feadesigned for use on a duck foot cultivator and tures. V g has for its prime object to provide means to The letter A denotes generally a rotar 5 keep dirt and field trash from accomulating picker wheel which includes a hub structure L and cloggingin said cultivator, thus widening 7 and a plurality of spoke blade receiving its usages. plant sockets 8 for receiving blades 9 or 10.
A still further important object of the in- The letter B denotes the picker wheel beam' vention resides in the provision of a device which includes an elongated straight body 10 of this nature which is exceedingly simple in 11 having an ofiset pintle 12 at one end and its construction, strong and durable, and an oppositelyoffset axle shaft 14 at the other thoroughly efficient and reliable in use. 'end on which is rotatable the hub 7 of the With the above and numerous other objects picker wheel A. Intermediate the ends of the in view as will appear as the description proelongated body 11 of the beam B there is pro- 15 ceeds, the invention resides in certain novel Vided an apertured car 15. The letter G de- 3 0 features of construction, and in the combinanotes a casting which is attached to the beam tion and arrangement of parts as will be here- 1 by means of suitable fastening elements such inafter more fully described and claimed. as ol 16' and has a bearing for rockably In the drawings: receiving the pintle 12. An arm 17 is rock- Figure 1 is a side elevation of'a cultivator ably mounted on the beam 1 by means of a embodying the features of my invention, bolt 18 and has an offset apertured ear 19 at Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof, its upper end for slidably receiving a rod 20, Figure 3 is an enlarged detail section the lower end of Which is pivotally engaged through the picker wh l, with the apertured ears 15 as at 21. 25 Figure 4 is a detail section taken substan- A op 22 is provided on the rod 20 and a tially 0n the line 44 of Figure 2, spring 23 is disposed about this rod imping- Figure 5 is an enlarged detail section ing against the top 22 and the apertured ear through one of the tensioning devices, 19 to, urgethe' beam to swlng downwardly Figure 6 is a perspective view of the picker wlth the picker wheel in engagement with the 30 wheel beam, and ground, the ground line being indicated by Figure 7 is a perspective View of another theletter G in Figure 1. The blades 10 may form of blade for the picker wheel. be Substituted for the blades 9 and have de Referring to the drawing in detail it will taohable plates 1 djace t the ends thereof. be seen that the numeral 1 denotes the duck Of course the blades 9 may be provided with foot cultivator beam-whichhasashank 2'pivthese blades 10. These plates are used in so oted to the rear end thereof and depending exceptionally loose soil and aids materially in downwardly and having fixed to its bottom keeping the cultlvator clean. enda cultivator shovel 3. A tensioning spring The picker wheel A rotates ahead of the 4 is anchored at one end to an intermediate .d'uck foot shovel 3 and continuously moves portion'of the shank 2 as at 5 and at its other loose dirt and trash over the duck foot shovel end to an intermediate portion of the beam 1 and past the shovel shank, thereby preventas at 6 and urges the shovel forwardly in the ing said dirt and trash from accumulating usual well known manner. All the parts thus and clogging the cultivator, It will be seen far described are of conventional construction that the picker Wheel is disposed in advance and well known in the art and have been illusof the shovel and slightly to one sideofthe 99 apex of said shovel. The presser spring 23 maintains a continuous pressure on the beam B thereby insuring positive traction to the picker wheel which takes its traction from the ground in which it runs.
At the same time this spring allows the wheel to raise over solid obstruction such as rock etc., often encountered in actual practice and furthermore the spring causes the raising of the shovel when the picker wheel encounters an object so that the shovel will not strike the obstacle. The casting C is adjustable since the bolt 16 may be loosened so as to slide the casting forwardly or rearwardly.
This adjustment allows the picker wheel and beam to be moved forward and backward for adjustment as the case may require at the same time allowing it to raise and lower. One of these attachments is to be associated with each beam of the cultivator to keep it free oftrash and dirt.
The uses of a duck foot cultivator without this device are limited but with it the cultivator may be used in trashy fields heretobefore shunned by users of the duck beam foot cultivator. It will also be seen that by the prevention of clogging the draft is materially lightened.
It is thought that the construction, utility, operation and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail inerelyv by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A trash clearer for cultivator shovels naled to the cultivator frame, and said wheel being journaled on its opposite end and tensional means between the for urging the wheel against the ground, said tensioning means consisting of a rod pivotally connected at one end to the aforementioned rod, guide means on the cultivator frame, and spring means interposed between the first mentioned rod and the said guide means. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM J. SMITH.
