PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER EDWARD SQUYARS, OF ELDORA, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 74 8, dated December 29, 1903- Application filed July 28, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it'known that I, ALEXANDER EDWARD SQUYARS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldora, in the county of Bryan and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the fo1- lowing is a specification.
The plow embodying the invention herein.
claimed is particularly characterized by novelty and'improvement with respect to the means for adjusting the plow-standard relative to the beam and for holding it at such adjustment and with respect to the sweeps and the shoe which carry the same and to the means for adjusting the shoe and sweeps.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof, and Fig. 3 is adetail showing the rear end of the beam.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 in dicaies the plow-beam, and 7 the handles fixed thereto. The plow standard or stock is shown at 8, hinged about midway of its length at 9 to the lower end of an arm 10, which is secured by bolts 10 to the under side of the rear end of the plow-beam and projects downwardly and forwardly therefrom.
The upper end of the plowstandard is forked, and the branches embrace the beam and are connected at the top above the beam by a cross-bolt 11. At the crotch or fork of the standard under the beam an edge is produced, as indicated at 12 in dotted lines, which takes in to one of a series of notches 13, formed in the underside of the plow-beam or in a plate secured thereto. Atthe lower end of the standard is a plowshare 14, which may be a shovel or. any other kind.
Hinged at 15 to the lower end of the plowstandard is a shoe 16, which carries the sweeps 17. This shoe is bent to bring it to The branches of Serial IEO. 167,318. (No model.)
the adjusting rod have sufficient lateral spring to permit them to be disengaged from thepin and then moved up or down to raise or lower the shoe, according to the depth desired for the plow and sweeps.
By loosening the bolts 10, which permits the arm and standard to drop slightly, the plow-standard may be turned on its pivot to swing forward or backward, according to the adjustment desired, and it is secured at such adjustment by a lever 21, which engages under the bolt 11, connecting the branches of the standard, and has a cam fulcrum-surface bearing on top of the beam, so that when the lever is turned down the standard is lifted,
bringing the edge 12 into the notch desired.
The rear end of the lever is forked, as at 22, and the forks spring sidewise to engage over the upper ends of the branches of the rod 18, which are notched, as at 18, to receive the same. The lever is thus held down in position, and the branches of the adjusting-rod are also held in engagement with the pins 20. To change the adjustments, it is simply necessary to disengage the branches of the lever from the notches by springing the branches open, and the lever can then be lifted to release the standard and to permit the adjusting-rod to be raised or lowered.
What I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a plow, the combination with a beam having a depending arm, and an adjustable standard pivoted to the lower end of the arm, of ashoepivoted at its frontend to the standard, an adjusting-rod connecting the rear end of the shoe and the rear end of the beam,
and a lever engaging the standard and beam,
to hold the former at adjustment, and having locking engagement with the upper on of the adjusting-rod.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER EDWARD SQUYARS. Witnesses:
