WILLIAM W. BLODGETT AND JOHN .H. SMITS, OF BROOKFIELD CENTRE, WIS.
CULTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,982, dated February 3, 1880. Application filed October 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WM. W. BLODGETT and J OHN H. SMITs, of Brookfield Centre, in the county of Waukesha, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to cultivators; and it consists in devices for regulating the dip and depth of the plows, as will hereinafter be fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a cultivator as improved by us; and Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the rear corners, with part broken away.
A A are the plow-beams, and B is the draftbar. This draft-bar passes between the front ends of the plow-beams and back to the basebar, .where it is secured, and is provided with a head-block, B, which fits over its front end, and which has a vertical hole through it for the standard b of a caster-wheel to play in. The standard I) is perforated transversely to receive a pin or bolt, 1), for holding it in proper adjustment. and is bifurcated at its top to receive a'lever, E, which is pivoted thereto.
The front end of lever E is connected with a clevis, D, which projects up from the headblock B, by a chain, d, and the other extends back as faras the base-bar, and in a position to be caught by the hook E.
A bent axle, F, is secured in suitable bearings on the under side of the plow-beams, and passes through an S-lever,li", which is squared onto it- This lever is operated by a bell-crank lever, G, and chains f j", passing down from either side of its pivot.
Projecting up from the axle F we provide curved standards H, having perforations It It for engagement with the bolts K K. These standards pass through brackets I, also perforated.
A toggle-lever, K, is pivoted to the longitudinal center of the base-bar C, from which extend, on each side, the bolts K K. The proper elevation is given by passing the bolt 1) through the standard b. The bolts K K V are then withdrawn and the axle turned, by means of the levers F and G. until the wheels have been sufficiently raised or lowered. The bolts K K are then forced out through the standards'by the toggle-lever K, which locks them in place. The machine is now ready.
If at any time it becomes necessary to give the plows more dip, the driver has only to operate .the lever K to withdraw the bolts, and with the other hand adjust the wheels by manipulating the bell-crank lever G.
When it is desired to decrease the dip or clear obstructions, the lever E is brought into requisition, a pressure on therear end of which will elevate the front of the machine; or the plows may be held entirely out of the ground by catching the free endof lever E under the hook E and depressing and 1ocking the wheels in their lowest position.
The clevis-bar D is made to project above the head-block, so that the draft will not have a tendency to lift the plows out of the ground.
We are aware that various devices have been patented for raising and lowering or regulatin g the height of the teeth or plows with relation to the wheels in cultivators; and therefore we do not claim such broadly; but
I What we claim is- I 1. The combination, with the wheels and bent axle, of the levers F and G, connected as described.
2. The combination, in a cultivator, of the wheels, bent axle, curved standards H H, and levers F G, as set forth.
3. The combination of the wheels, bent axle, eurvedstandards, brackets I, and locking mechanism K K K.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 6th day of October, 1879.
i w. w. BLODGETT.
