This invention relates to improvements in plows, and more particularly to gang-plows; and it consistsin the novel constructionand arrangement of the various parts whereby a land-gage is providedtogether with a suitable and convenient mechanism for shifting the same,to alter the line of draft,and whereby the axle of the gage-wheel is utilized as a drawbar in connection with the said gage.
In the drawings, Figure 1l is a plan view of the attachments shown in connection with a plow ofthe style mentioned,the frame whereof is shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation in detail of the lever for shifting the line of draft, showing the manner of suspending the same on the frame of the plow. Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly in section, of the detent-latch for locking the lever in position. Fig. 4 is a detail view, in front elevation, of a section of the draw-bar with a set-sleeve for controlling the line of draft.
IIeretofore various devices have been used for shifting the line of draft upon the bar extended across the front of the plow-frame and known asa draw-bar. The best of these have consisted of double sprocket f wheels mounted in vertical shafts at either end of the draw-bar, upon which has been mounted a chain, the free ends of which are attached to and control the position of the draft-link of the plow. By winding and unwinding the chain upon the sprocket this link has been shifted from side to side, thereby changing the line of draft. This has been known as a land-gage,and it is to accomplish the same purpose in a simpler and more convenient manner that I have provided the attachments shown in the drawings.
In the plows of the kind known as gangplowsthey have usually been provided with a gage-wheel at the forward end, on the righthand side of the plow, to run in the bottom of the last furrow previously made. It is by means of this wheel that the various depths are set at which it is desired to plow. When the gage-Wheel extends to the same level as the plow-bottom s, the furrows will sink to the same depth as the former furrows, (or until the gage-wheel strikes on the bottom of the former furrow.)
In the present invention the axle of the gage-wheel A is set back to form the liftingarm A and is extended across the front of the frame of the plow to form the portion A2, which is herein utilized as the draft -bar. The portion A2 of the axle is mounted in bearings AEAS, which are extended down from the forward end of the beams of the plow by means of bolts A"L A4. Loosely mounted to slide upon this portion A2 of the axle is a sleeve B, which is provided in the upper portion with a pin B', having an elongated head B2. The sleeve B is also provided on the under part with an eye B3, formed integrally with the sleeve. The pin B is extended to receive and hold the forward end of the lever C, the loop C being formed on the end thereof to iit over the barrel of the pin and under the head. The eye Bs is intended to hold loosely the draft-rod D as it extends forward from its holding-strap D', which is secured to the plow-beam X. The strap D' is bolted to the plow-beam by means of the bolts D2 D2. At the forward end the draft-rod D is provided with t-he eye D3 to receive the draft-link D, It is to the draftlink D4 that the team is hitched. It now will be seen that as the team is hitched to the draft-link D4 at the forward end of the draftrod D theline of draft for the implement will be changed to the right or left as the sleeve B is thrown to the left or right, or, in other words, that the draft will be increased to the side of the implement to which the end of. the draft-rod D is shifted. The end of the draft-rod D may be .shifted by means of the lever C and its attachments, (shown in the drawings at Fig. 1,) or it may be shifted by hand and held by means of the sctscrew B4, by tightening which the sleeve Bmay be set rigidly upon any point on the IOO draft-bar or the portion A2 of the axle, which here serves the purpose of the draft-bar. This method, however, is inconvenient, as it necessitates the stopping of the team and the backing of the same to slack the draft-chains in order that the sleeve may be shifted. It may, however, be used in that manner. \Vhen, however, it is desired to have the implement as easy to manipulate as possible, the lever C is used to shift the end of the draft-rod by shifting the sleeve B and by locking the lever C in position to lock the draft-rod in position. The lever and its attachments, as shown in Fig. 1, consist of the lever C, f ulcru med to a detent-frame C2, which is pivotally mounted upon the bolt C3, extending through the lower end of the bifurcated frame C, which is secured to the crossbeam X of the plow-frame by suit-able bolts. The lever is fulcrumed in the forward end of the detent-frame C2 on a bolt (Y and within a slot formed by a bridge C, extending up from the frame C2. As before stated, in the forward end the lever is provided with an elongated slot C', which fits around the pin B and by the elongation of which accom modates the variation of the are of its movement to the straight line of travel of the sleeve B and the pin B'. The lever is set and locked in position by means of the latch C7, which is provided at the lower end with two detent-teeth CS, adapted to strike in and hold on the teeth of the detent (J2. The latch CT is thrown against the detent by the spiral spring C, which expands against the lower wall of a hollow formed in the casting, and a Cotter-pin C10. The latch lits around the le ver C, being provided with guide-slots cast in it. To the upper end of the latch is connected the connecting-rod C, which connects the latch to the rocking pull-lever C12. By depressing the rocking lever C12 the connecting-rod Cu and latch are drawn toward the handle of the lever C, raising the latch O7 and freeing the lever to move about the fulcrum or bolt C5. As stated, to move the 1ever C causes the sleeve B and draft-rod D to move, and thus change the line of draft of the implement.
By the term line of draft, heretofore used, has been meant the pulling strain with reference to the lateral or side pull to guide the plow or correct any tendency which it might have in certain soils to drift sidewise. By the collar-draft is meant the height at which the draft-bar is placed to increase or diminish the lifting tendency which the pull of the team has on the forward end of the plow. By changing the collar-draft the anlthe bolts A4 A, which are raised and lowered on the plow-beams, and thereby change the collar-draft. To brace these bearings A3 A3, the liat braces A5, A5, and AG are used, the former extending in line with the beams and the latter extending across these, as shown at Fig. l of drawings. It is because of the change of the height of the draft-bar also that the detent-frame C2 is pivotally mounted on the frame Cl. By this mounting the draftbar may be lowered or raised and the lever C will swing with it.
To operate the gage-wheel to raise and lower the same, there is provided a device for rotating the portion A2 of the axle. Any suitable device may be used; but the par ticular device used by me is shown and described in a companion application to this.
Having thus described this invention, it is claimed- Y l. ln a plow the combination of a draft-bar extended across the front of a plowframe; suitable hangings by which the said bar may be raised and lowered; a loose sleeve to slide on the said bar and adapted to support the draft-link; alever loosely engaging the said sleeve, and fulcrumed in a swinging frame; and a swinging frame provided with the fulcrum for the lever and a locking device to Set the leverin position and pivotally mounted on the frame of a plow, substantially as described.
2. In a plow the combination of a draft-bar extended across the front of a plow-frame; suitable hangings by which the said bar may be raised and lowered; a draft-rod pivotall y connected to the plow-frame at the rear; a loose sleeve to slide on the said bar and adapted to support the forward end of the draftrod; a lever loosely engaging the said sleeve and fulcrumed in a swinging frame to shift the sleeve from side to side 5 a swinging frame provided with a detent-rack and a fulcrum for the said lever and pivotally mounted in a frame extended down from the frame of the plow; and a latch mounted to slide on the lever to engage the detent-rack and provided with a spring and lever tomove it in opposite directions to lock and unlock the lever, substantially as described.
