SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,749, dated May9, 1882. Application filed December 9, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVAH P. OSBORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trumansburg, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. a
This invention has relation to sulky-plows; and the novelty consists in pivoting the plowbeam to the frame so that it may have a free lateral movement on each side of a locked position which corresponds to the line of draft.
It further consists in pivoting the beam to the axis to admit of a vertical motion, combined with mechanism whereby the plow may be raised or lowered at will, and so arranged that the plow and its beam will ride over an obstruction without operating or affecting the raising and lowering mechanism, as will be hereinafter set forth.

Fig. 5 is a side elevation, showing more clearly the plowlifting mechanism; and Fig. 6 is a similar view, in which is illustrated the manner in which the plow will ride over an obstruction without changing theposition of the lifting mechanism.

A is the plow-beam, provided with the usual point, B, and mold-board O.
D is the arched axle, to the outer ends of which are secured the cranks E E, carrying the wheels F F. 7
To the forward end of the beam A is attached the ordinary clevis, G.
H is the tongue, which is secured in a shoe cast on the axle I).
I is a spring-seat for the driver, and is secured to the tongue H by bolts i.
K is a clutch mounted upon a shaft, L, passing through the arch 1), its ends extending outward so as to form journals for the wheelcranks E E. In the front end of the clutch clutch K, and extends downward and around the beam A. A locking-lever, O, is secured .on top of the forward end of the beam and within reach of the drivers foot. One endof this lever O engages in the detent 7c of the clutch K, and is held securely there by the spring 0. A dog, 0-, on this lever drops into a depression in the beam and prevents the strain coming on the shaft 0 upon which the lever is mounted.
A hand-lever, I, is secured to the tongue, and connected by the usual chain and rod to a bent crank, R, mounted on the shaft L. This crank R passes under the arm M, but is not connected to it, so that it the lever P is 0perated the arm M and clutch K will be tilted, and at the same time the arm and clutch may be raised, by the action of the plow passing over an obstruction, without interfering with ormoving the crankR and its connecting mechanism.
The plow-beam is pivoted in the yoke N by the bolt n. Then the lever is in the detent k the beam A is rigid with the frame so far as lateral motion is concerned; but of course the beam may be vertically raised or lowered by the lever P.
The plowproper being in the position shown in Fig. 1, and it being necessary to turn, say, a right angle, in plowing, the driver presses his foot on the forward end of the foot-lever O, which releases it from the detent k in clutch K, and by turning the tongue to the right or left' the plow-beam remains fast, being held by the point in the furrow. The driver then starts the team in the new direction, which causes the beam to swing around until itcomes into the new line of draft, and as soon as it does the detent 7c is brought in line with thelever O, which falls into it and looks it in said position.
It will thus be seen that it is not necessary for the driver to raise the plow from the furrow in turning a corner, or to lock it after 110 doesturn,asthisis accomplished automatically.

I am aware previous to my invention looking devices have been applied to the tongue and frame of wheel plows and cultivators, whereby the tongue may swing on either side and lock itself on returning to its normal position. My improvement relates only to devices for automaticallylockin g the plow-beam in the direction of the line of draft and releasing it when turning corners.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination, in a sulky-plow, of a plow-beam vertically pivoted to the frame, and mechanism for automatically locking it in a position corresponding to theline of draft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a sulky-plow, of a plow-beam pivoted to the frame forward of the point of the plow, and mechanism forantomatically looking it in a' position correspond- 2 5 ing to the line of draft and releasing it therefrom at the will of the operator, as set forth.
' 3. In asulky-plow,avertically-pivoted plowbeam provided with a locking-lever, combined with a frame having a catch to receive the 0 locking-lever, whereby the beam may be automatically locked in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. Ina sulky-plow, the beam A, having the locking foot-lever O, in combination with the 3 5 shaft L, arch-axle D, clutch K, having detent k, and yoke N, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In asulky-plow, the beam A, secured to the clutch K, having the arm M, in combina- 4o lion with the crank R and hand-lever 1 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
