UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
WILLIAM H. CUMMINGS, OF BOONESBOROUGH, IOWA.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,824, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed October 23, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. GUMMINGS, of Boonesborough, in the county of Boone, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
rIhis invention relates to certain improvements in sulky-plows; and it has for its 0biects to provide means whereby the weight of the plow may be counterbalan ced by the weight yof the driver, and the raising and lowering of the plow from and to its work greatly facilitated, and by means of which the weight of the driver may be thrown to the rear. or forward of the axle, at will, to relieve the animals of the weight of the tongue when at work, and prevent the tongue from being elevated by the weight'of the plow when the plow is raised out of the ground. These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a plow constructed according to my invention, with the rear wheel shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a rear viewof my plow, and Fig. 3 a top view of the same. l
r)The letter A indicates the frame of the plow, mounted upon the axle B, which is journaled iu bearings in said frame, so that it can bc partially rotated. rEhe said axle is bent downward and outward at one end, as indicated by 4the letter C, on which end is mounted the driving-wheel D. Upon the other end of the axle is mounted a loose sleeve, E, provided with an arm, F, carrying the journal Gr, upon which the other driving-wheel, H, is mounted. The shaft or axle has secured to it an arm, I, which is connected by a link, K, with a lever, L, fulcrumed to the frame, and provided with a pawl, M, controlled by a rod and lever, N, secured to the handle, and` adapted to engage a toothed segment, O, whereby the lever may be fastened in any desired position. The sleeve E is provided with a short lever, P, which is operated by means of a spring, R, to engage a toothed segment, S, as said lever is moved back and forth, for the purpose hereinafter more fully explained.
(Model.)
The letter A' indicates a lever-frame fulcrumed to the axle of the plow. The said frame has pivoted to its lower end a cross-bar, B', carrying a plate, C', to which the plo'wbeam D' is secured. To the uppervend of said frame, on the crossbar E', is pivoted the seatframe F', to which the spring G is securely fastened. The seat-spring extends forward and is secured to the foot-support H', and its extremity is pivoted to a cross-bar, I', which is, in turn, pivoted to the uprights K', which are, at their lower ends, pivot-ed to a cross-bar.|
x L', secured to the frame ofthe machine. The
lever-frame, at one`side,is provided with a handle, M', which carries a sliding pawl, N', controlled by a rod and lever, O', and adapted to engage a ratchet, P', 0n the frame of the machine, by means ot' which thelever-frame may be held in any desired position.
The operation of my improved machine will be evident from the above description.
It will be seen that the weight of the plow will be counterbalanced by the weight ot' the driver, and that by shifting the seat by means of the handle on the lever-frame the weight of the driver may be thrown either forward or rear of the axle.
. The lever 011 the sleeve at the end of the axle controls the furrow-wheel to regulate or level the plow to the furrow, while the lever secured to the axle operates the other wheel to regulate the depth of the furrow.`
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe combination, in a snlky-plow, of a leverframe fulcrumed to the axle and carrying the plow at its lower end and the seat at the other, with the upright pivoted to the foot-support and the frame of the machine, and suitable levers and devices for operating the leverframe, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of September, 1880.
WILLIAM HENRY CUMMINGS.
