PATENT CFFICE.
EDMUND E. FLINT, TONAWANDA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,148, datedNovember 19, 187:3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND E. FLINT, of
Tonawanda, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved washing-machine, the line c c in Fig. 2 indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical transverse section on the line k 7c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
This invention relates to a washing-machine which is intended to combine the advantages of economy, simplicity of construction, and reliable operation, and to furnish thus an apparatus of great usefulness to the public. The invention consists in certain improvements upon washing-machines, as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the suds-box of the washing-machine. Itis of semi-cylindrical shape, or nearly so, of wood or other material, and supported on legs ct a or other standards. B is the rubber. Its shape is segmental, the rubbing-surface being formed by diamond-shaped slats or rods b b, or equivalent devices. This rubber is attached to the lower ends of vertical slotted bars d d, whose upper ends are connected by a transverse handle. C is a shaft hung transversely in the upper part of the box A. It passes through the slots of the uprights d, and serves as the pivot of the rubber when the same is vibrated. D is a roller bottom put within the suds-box beneath the rubber. It
is composed of rollers ff hung in arched side bars g, and is held in place inthe suds-box by water-plugs h h introduced through the sides of the box in manner clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In operation the rubber is vibrated by hand, and moves over the roller bottom D, the articles to be cleaned being between the rollers f and slats b. E is awash-board fastened to the top of the rubber.- It can be usedfor handwashing by placing the rubber against one end of the suds-box, into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, upon a slat, c', provided in the box for its support, and under a projecting ledge, j, of the box. In this position the rubber will be securely held in position and will be convenient for hand use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in thc same Washingmachine, of semi-cylindrical suds-box A hav ing the slat i and projecting ledge j, with the arc-shaped rubber B having the wash-board E on the top thereof, as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The roller bottom D, combined with the water-plugs h and the suds-box A, whereby it is heldin place, as specified.
3. A washing-machine having suds-box A, rubber B, transverse shaft C, roller bottom D, and wash-board E, constructed and relatively arranged, substantially as and for the purpose described.
