Description

w. PQWHITTIER Improvement in Attachment to Driving-Reins.
No. 133,134. Patent ed Now-19,1872.
A MPHOTO'LIT/ OGHAFHIC C0. NX/QSBORNL'S P170058 5.) V
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. WHITTIER, OF DAYTON, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS TO DRIVING-RUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,134, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. WHITTIER, of Dayton, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving-Reins and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end view of the part to receive the bolt a; and Fig. 3 shows the part containing the bolt (1-.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention has for its object to prevent the twisting of reins and to facilitate the untwisting when twisted.
My device is intended to be applied to the ends of the splices, so called, instead of the buckle usually employed to unite the same. This part of the reins is the one held in the hand, and, when a certain kind of material is employed, is called the webbing.
My invention consists of two pieces of metal, I) and 0. 11 carries the bolt to. c has the socket d. The bolt a enters the socket d and turns freely therein, being held by the bolt-head. c and f illustrate the two pieces of the splices to which the two metal pieces b and c are fastened.
If, in harnessing a horse, the reins become twisted, after the driver has collected all the twist near the ends of the splices where the metal pieces are attached, and has grasped the reins forward or beyond the twist thus collected, he has only to straighten the reins between his two hands and the twist will be removed by reason of the bolt a turning in the socket 01 till the reins are wholly untwisted.
This arrangement saves much care in harnessing, since before this it was necessary to see to it that the twist was out of the rein before it was buckled t0 the bit or the two ends of the splices buckled to each other.
To collect the twist near the endof the rein held in the hand, when it is near the head of the animal, the reins can be turned in the hand till all forward of the hand of the driver is even and regular.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a driving-rein, as herein set forth, of the metal pieces]; and 0, having the bolt a and socket cl, as herein set forth.
\VILLIAM P. WHITTIER.
