CELESTE H. RUBERSON, OF CLAEKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI.
FLOUR-SIFTER.
Application. filed April 2, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Cnrnsrn H. Ronnnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarksdale, in the county of Coahoma and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Flour- Sifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of sifters which is generally employed in household use for sifting flour and similar material. and has for its object to provide a sifter equipped with series of removable and interchangeable sifting screens to facilitate separation of the flour.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompany incr drawing, in which:
*igure 1 represents a perspective view of the flour sifter.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Fig. 3 represents a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4i of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing in retail wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the hollow cylindrical body or casing of the sifter havinc open ends and provided with an internal si ting screen 6 arranged below the agitator 7 carried by the vertical shaft 8. A handle 9 consisting of a vertical grip 10 and horizontal arms 11, is pivoted to the body 5 through the medium of rivets 12. The rivets 12 pass through the arms 11 and through brackets 13 which latter are secured to the body 5 adjacent openings 1 1 in the body. The
. arms 11 extend into the body 5 through the openings 14c and the shaft 8 is secured to and carried by the inner ends thereof.
The body 5 at a point below the screen 6 is forn' ed with a circumferential slot 15 constituting an entrance opening of ade quate width to accommodate the auxiliary sifting screens to be hereinafter more fully described.
The portion of the hollow body 5 lying in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Serial 1510. 286,893.
the horizontal plane of the opening 15 is struck outwardly to provide a substantially semi-circular holder 16 for the auxiliary screens and spaced flanges 17 are secured to or formed integral with the holder 16 and extend throughout the entire length of the latter.
The holder 16 is provided with as many supporting flanges 17 as desired and each is adapted to support auxiliary screens 18 each of which is secured in a frame 19 preferably constructed of metal or similar material of adequate strength and rigidity to retain the screen 18 in proper position and prevent it from sagging. An agitator 18 secured to the shaft 8 above each auxiliary screen. 18. The frame 19 of each auxiliary screen 18 is provided with a recess 19 for the reception of the shaft 8. The engage ment between the Walls of the recesses 19 and the shaft 8 hold the screens 18 against rotary movement during the operation of the sifter.
in order to prevent the flour or other material being sifted from escaping through the opening 15, a substantially semi-cylindrical door 20 having extended ends is hinged at one end as indicated at 21 to one terminal of the holder 16, and when the door is swung inwardly it completely covers the opening 15. A spring latch or holder 22 is carried by the free end of the door and is provided with a lug 23 adapted to engage in the recess 2% formed in one end of the holder 16 to secure the door in closed position and prevent it from accidentally swinging open.
In use, the auxiliary screens 18 may be removed, if preferred, and the material may be sifted through the main screen 6 only, whereas if it is desired to further sift or separate the material, one or more of the auxiliary screens 18 is placed in the holder 16 and by vibratory movement of the body 5 on the handle 9 the material is successively sifted through the several auxiliary screens.
ld hat T claim is 1. A sifter including a hollow body open at its upper end and provided with an opening in its side wall, a plurality of agitators movably mounted in the body in relatively spaced relation, and a screen located in the body below each agitator and removable through said side opening independently of each other and the agitators.
A sifter including a hollow body open at its upper end and provided with an opening in its side wall, a plurality of agitators said side opening,'a11d an operating element connected to said agitators.
3. A sitter including a hollow body open at its upper end and provided with an opening inits side wall, a plurality of horizontally disposed agitators movably mounted in the body in Vertically spaced relation, a screen fixed within the body below one of said agitators, and a'screen located in the body below each of said other agitators and removable through' said side opening independently of each other and said other agitators.
A sitter including a hollow body open at its upper and lower ends and provided with an opening in its side wall :I(l].l(30l1t its lower end, a plurality of horizontally disposed agitators inovably mounted in the body in vertically spaced relation a screen fixed within the body below one of said agitators, a screen located in the body below each of said other agitators and removable through said side openings independently of each other and said other agitators, a closure for said side openings, and an operating element connected to said agitators.
In testimony whereof I al'liX my signature.
