INVENTOR ATTORN EYS n4: NORRIS FETEiS 00., Puo'rouwo" wasumcrou. n. c.
NITED STATES ADOLPH HAENICHEN, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
ROTARY ASH-SIFTERL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,263, dated October 3, 1899.
Application filed September 23, 1898. Serial No. 691,703. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ADOLPH HAENICHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Ash-Sitters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to rotary sitters for coal, ashes, flour, &c.; and it constitutes an improvement upon the sitter shown and described in Letters Patent No. 588,745, granted to me August 24, 1897.
The invention consists in the improved rotary sitter and in the combination and arrangement ot the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finallyembodied in the clauses of the claim.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate parts correspondingly referred to in this specification, and wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved rotary sitter in position upon the top of a barrel or other receptacle, certain parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the sitter as shown in Fig; 1, certain parts being broken away; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are enlarged views of certain details-of my invention.
In said drawings the sitter is shown as consisting, essentially, of a rotary cylindrical sitter, a box provided with a cover and in whichsaid sitter is revolubly mounted, and a support for sustaining said box upon. a barrel, can, or other receptacle. Thesupport consists of four segment-shaped pieces a. a b b, preferablyof wood, two of themtor instance, a cU-having their tips removed and being secured to the others by means of screwsc, pros jecting through the tips thereof and into the ends of the first-named pair. The box d is preferably rectangular in shape and has two opposing sides, as 61 d inclined toward each other. It may be secured upon the support in any desired manner, as by screws.
2 indicates a cover for the box, and it con-' sists of the side plates 6' c connected by. the strips f f The strips f f connect the side plates near the lower edges of the latter, and connecting their upper edges and extending over the upper edges of the side plates is a galvanized sheet-iron hood g, secured to said strips and the side plates by screws or nails g. The cover is pivotallymounted on the box by means of hinges h, whose leaves are arranged and move in parallel planes, be ing therefore secured to the sides of the cover and the box, and means for holding the cover tightly down upon the upper edges of the box consists of apair of clips i, secured one upon each side plate of the cover and each having a slit z" at its lower end, which biturcates the clip, and being adapted to receive, when the coveris in its lowermost position, a securing thu inb-screwe having a shoulder 1' which when said thumb-screw is screwed inwardly abuts against the face of the clip each side of the slit thereof.
indicates a litter secured to the front strip f The sifting device consists of two circular side or end pieces Z, connecting and secured around the peripheries or edges of which is a wire screen m, forming therewith a cylinder.
, Each side or end piece Z has an outer peripheral flange Z, and between the two flanges of said side or end pieces is arranged the screen. The ends of said screen are secured down upon the peripheries of the side or end pieces by means of surrounding strips n, secured to the latter by screws or nails 'n, projecting through meshes ot the screen, or, if desired, the parts referred to may be held together by simply punching the strips downwardly into the wood of the side or end pieces between the meshes ot the wire, also using but comparatively few nails or screws.
The cylinder is divided longitudinally to form a comparatively small portion 0, which is hinged to the main body of the cylinder by hinges o, substantially similar to the hinges h. The portion 0 of the cylinder is secured down to the main body thereof by means of a pair of hooks 17, one 011 each side of the cylinder, each engaginga pinp, projecting from the main portion of each end piece of the cylinder, said hooks constituting the downwardlybent free end of a rock-shaft preferably of heavy wire, extending over the portion 0, fulcrumed in recesses r in the flanges Z and held in place by the strips 12, which latter are bent to pass over them. The rock-shaft is formed intermediate its ends with a bend s, which forms a handle by which the hooks are manipulated.
The means for revolubly mounting the cylindrical sitter proper in the box consists of a pair of disks .2, provided with stub-shafts .2 .2 projecting from their outer faces and secured to the outer faces of the side or end pieces of said cylinder. The stub-shaft a has a squared end 2 upon which is mounted a crank .2 having a handle .2 by which rotation is imparted to the cylinder.
In Figs. 3 and 4C is shown in detail the construction of thecylinder. It will be seen that at the meeting edges of the two portions of the cylinder are arranged cross-rods or heavy wires i, which connect the corresponding parts of the side or end pieces and around which are folded the screen 177 and the strips 12, the former being bent back upon itself, as shown at 11, Figs. 3 and 4, and the ends of the latter extending over and being secured to the adjoining edges of said parts of the side pieces and secured thereto by means of nails or screws r. As a means for keeping the support and the sifter generally in proper position on the barrel 1 have provided angular lugs '20, secured to the under side of the support by screws 0;, which, if it is desired to mount the sifter upon barrels or other receptacles of different diameters, may project through longitudinal slots 3 in said lugs.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sitting device, the combination with a suitable support having a central opening and a box mounted thereon over said opening and provided with a suitable cover, of a cylindrical sifter arranged in said box and consisting of circular end pieces, a wire screen surrounding and secured at its outer edges to said end pieces, means for journaling said sifter in the box and for rotating the same,
said sifter being divided longitudinally to form two sections, pins projecting from the outer faces of one of said sections, a rockshaft extendingoverand longitudinally of the other of said sections and bent to form a centrally-situated handle and hooks at its extremities extending parallel to the end pieces and adapted to engage the pins, longitudinally-extending wires or rods connecting said side pieces and arranged at the meeting edges of said sections, the adjoining edges of the screen being bent around the same, and strips secured upon the peripheries of said end pieces and extending over said rods and the rock-shaft, said strips being bent around the rods and secured to the meeting edges of said end pieces, substantially as described.
2. In a sitting device, the combinatiomwith a suitable support having a central opening and a box mounted thereon over said opening and provided with a suitable cover, of a cylindrical sifter arranged in said box and consisting of circular end pieces and a wire screen surrounding said end pieces, means for journaling said sifter in the box and for rotating the same, said sitter being divided longitudinally to form two sections, pins projecting from the outer faces of one of said sections, a rock-shaft extending over and longitudinally of the other of said sections and bent to form acentrally-situated handle and hooks at its extremities extending parallel to the end pieces and adapted to engage the pins, longitudinally-extending wires or rods connecting said end pieces and arranged at the meeting edges of said sections, the adjoining edges of the screen being bent around the same, and strips secu red upon the peripheries of said end pieces and extending over said rods and the rock-shaft, said strips being bent around the rods, secured atthe meeting edges of said end pieces and being provided with projections engaging said screen between the meshes thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of September, 1898.
