Application filed ctober 10, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, MARCEL B. BrissoN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county oil N ew York and State ot New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a speciiication.
llhis invention relates to improvements in combs and more particularly to a sanitary comb so constructed as to greatly facilitate the cleaning of the same.
ln the types oi combs now in general use, it is very dii'licult to remove dirt and grease from between the teeth, the same being usually accomplished by running` a wire or cord between the teeth, which not only consumes a great deal oi time but is a very tedious operation.
lt is therefore the principal object of this invention to provide a comb including a tooth supporting member in which are mounted a plurality of revoluble teeth whereby a brush may be used in cleaning the same by rubbing the bristles across the comb to revolve the teeth for removing foreign matter from all sides of the same with little or no effort.
Another object of the invention is to provide a comb comprising a tooth supporting member having revoluble teeth removably mounted therein, whereby a broken or mutilated tooth may be readily replaced by a new one bv removing the cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive form of comb in which provision is made for varying the space between the teeth without weakening` the structure or detracting` from the rigidity of the teeth.
`With these and other objects in view which will be more apparent as the nature, purpose and operation is more clearly understood, reference is made to the following description claims and accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comb constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional. view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
F ig. e is a similar view on the line @Je oiE Fig. 1.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Serial No. 329,656.
Fig. 5 is a view of a modified form oitl the invention.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference. 10 designates a. hollow tooth supporting` member, which is provided with bottom, side and end walls r11, 12, and 13 respectively. the said bottom wall is preierably provided with a plurality of spaced apertures 141, through which are projected the circular teeth 1o, the inner ends of the same being enlarged to form circular heads 16. A cover member 17 is adapted to close the open side of the supporting` member 10, after the teeth have been positioned therein. The length oi the heads 16 areequal to the distance between the bottom wall 11 and cover member 17, and the diameter of said heads are approximately equal to the space between the walls 12; the arrangement just described, it will be seen that when the bristles of the brush are tri-ctionally passed over the teeth, the same will be revolved in the supporting` member for the easy cleaning of all of the sides of the same. lt will be further noted that the heads 16 are confined within the supporting member and coa-ct with one Ianother to maintain the proper rigidity of the teeth relative of the supporting member.
The majority of combs now in use, comprise coarse and ne teeth and the teeth 15, just described and appearing at the left half of F ig. 1, represent the coarse section of the comb. ln order to provide line teeth which can be associated with the same tooth supporting' member, without materially weakening the structure or detracting from the rigidity of the teeth, an arrangement such as shown at the right half of Fig. 1 is utilized and comprises teeth 18, having` circular heads 19, the latter being approximately one halt of the height of the heads 16. rlhe lower half of the side walls between which the heads 19'are mounted are thickened to provide a snug lit for the reduced diameter of said heads. rlihe teeth Q0 are substantially longer than the teeth l and are provided with circular heads 21 and are substantially o the same diameter of the heads 16 said heads being adapted to occupy the place between the upper ends, of the heads 19 and the cover member 17. The teeth 18 and 20 are alternately arranged within the apertures 22 which apertures are placed closer to each other than the apertures 14C and it `will be seen that the heads 19 are separated from each other by that portion or' the tooth 20 Which extends from the head 2l to the inner surface of the Wall ll. ln assembling the comb the teeth are dropped throug'h the openings, the teeth 18 being first inserted and the teeth 2O positioned thereafter. The cover member 17 is then secured in place on the support by any desired fastening means.
In the modied Jform illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the heads 1G are provided with semi-spherical centering lugs 23 which are adapted to be received by the bearings 2i formed in the cover member 17. The engagement of the lugs with the bearings serve to aline the teeth in the openings and prevent lateral play of the teeth, thereby adding to the rigidity of the same.
No limitation is made to the precise structure set forth and shown, said showing being` merely illustrative of one means of reducing the invention to practice and it is understood that equivalent structures which would be covered by the claims may be resorted to when desired.
liVha-t is claimed as new is l. A comb comprising a hollow apertured tooth supporting member, a plurality of revoluble heads mounted therein and teeth formed on said heads and extending` outwardly through said openings.
2. A comb comprising a hollow apertured tooth supporting member, a plurality of revoluble circular heads mounted therein for coacting engagement With each other and teeth Yformed on said heads and extending outwardly through said openings.
3. A comb comprising a tooth supporting member including bottom, side and end Walls, said bottom Wall having a plurality of spaced alined apertures, a cover for said supporting member, circular heads adapted to be coniined Within the supporting member for rotation, and teeth formed on said heads and extending outwardly through the apertures in said bottom wall.
4:. A comb comprising a tooth supporting member, bottom, side and end Walls, and a cover therefor, said bottom Wall having a plurality of spaced alined apertures, one half of which are relatively Widely spacedwith respect to the remainder, circular heads adapted to be conined for rotation Within the supporting member, Vteeth formed on said heads and extending outwardly through the widely spa ed openings, a second set of alternately superposed heads eonned 'for rotation in said supporting member, and teeth Jrormed thereon and extending through the remaining openings.
ln testimony whereof hereby aiiX my signature.
