Description

PICKER. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 30, 1916.

JOSEPH NAULT, 0F NASONVILLE, RHODE ISLAND. V
PICKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1920.
Application filed December 30, 1916. Sela]. No. 139,818.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, J OSEPH NAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nasonville, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pickers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to loom pickers and more particularly to pickers such as are employed in multiple box looms and are constructed of raw-hide or analogous material.
It is the experience of loom operatives to find that a picker has worn out where it is engaged *by the picker stick, and this after a short period of use, and when the picker in its entirety must be replaced the cost is considerable and the work is materially delayed while the worn picker is being removed to give place to a new picker.
The object of my invention is to provide a member in and forming part of the picker and adapted when worn to be expeditiously and easily removed and as readily replaced with a new member, with a View to losing only a portion of the picker and but little time incidental to the making of the substitution.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when the same are read in connection with the'drawings, accompanyingand forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view illustrating a picker constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2vis an end elevation of that end of the picker toward the loom.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken through the picker in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by arrow.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My novel picker 3 is illustrated as properly arranged relative to its guide rod 1 on which it is slidable, and also relative to a picker stick 2 that tends to wear away the picker as before described. Itwill also be noted that the picker 3 is provided in its edge remote from the picker stick with the usual depression 4: designed for the'engagement of the end of its complementary shuttle (not shown).
, with the loss of the entire .IIQSSGS. I
My novel picker comprises a major portion of raw hide in one edge of which is a recess 5 that is undercut as indicated by 6, and a separable member 7 of raw hide disposed in said recess and having the beveled end 8, whereby it is held to and movable as a unit with the major portion of the picker.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that the member 7 receives the blows of'the picker stick, and that said member alone is worn incidental to the operation of the mechanism. V
' When the said member 7 is worn and rendered useless it is susceptible of being expeditiously and easily removed and as readily replaced at little expense, as compared picker, and with the loss of but little time. f
While it is preferred to form the major portion and the member 7 of raw hide, I would have it understood that the said parts may be formed of other material or materials compatible with their functions, without involving departure from the scope of my claim. I would also have it understood that the member 7 may be detachably' i engaged and held to the major portion of the picker by any other means than that shown and described, without affecting myent, is:
The combination in a loom, of a guiding rod, a picker stick, and a picker having an edge adapted to strike a shuttleand also having a recess in its opposite edge the lower wall of which is undercut, and a removable member disposed in said recess and having a beveled end opposed to the undercut wall thereof; the said picker and its removable member being mounted on the guiding rod, whereby said rod'is utilized to assist in holding them together, and the removable member being adapted to receive the blows of the stick. a
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin presence of two. subscribing wit- 7 JOSEPH NAULT.
