To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. KENNEDY, residing at Natick, in the town of Warwick, county of Kent, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Threading Shuttles for Looms, of which the following is a specifieation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention relates to an improvement in self-threading loom-shuttles and comprises the novel construction and combination of the several parts as hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the claim.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a shuttle with my invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with the key block slid along so that the thread delivery eye is uncovered. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the end of the key block. Fig. t is an elevation of the other side of the shut tle showing the thread delivery eye and the other end of the key block in position. Fig. 5 is a top plan View of my thread delivery eye in the flat before the same is rolled up. Fig. 6 is an edge elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is a cross section of the eye on line 00 w of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the end of a shuttle with the key block removed and a side of the key way broken away. Fig. 9 is a perspective View of the under side of the key block showing the spring.
In the drawings the shuttle S is provided with the usual bobbin B from which the thread T unwinds. The front end of the shuttle S has a recess R which is connected with the bobbin cavity by the channel C. The thread delivery eye E extends through the side of S from the bottom of the recess It and parallel with the top surface of S. The recess R and the eye E with the exception of the tang e are covered over by the key block K, which slides in the key way W and closes the slot or opening in which the eye E is seated. The thread delivery eye E is made from sheet metal or any other suitable substance, and made into the form shown in Fig. 5, then rolled up as seen in Figs. 4, 7 and 8. The eye E has a circumferentially arranged depression or groove D, into which the tongue d, which is a little the tongue cl projects into the depression I) (Fig. 7) but just so as not to engage the bottom or any surface, of said groove or de-' pression, thus allowing the free passage of the thread about the same and into the eye E, but yet far enough so that it is out of and beyond the inner cylindrical surface of the eye E, as seen at the point P of Fig. 7 thus preventing the thread from working or coming out of the eye E. The depression or groove D extends nearly across the blank which facilitates the making of the eye E. as the tongue 03 will readily assume its said proper relation to the groove D at any point along the groove D, so does not require to be nicely adjusted at any fixed point to be operative. The eye E also has the tang e which is driven into the shuttle body after the shoulder of the channel C has been rounded at that point to allow of the free and unrestricted passage of the thread around and down into the eye E which is guided and assisted by the tang e, which has a smooth surface for the thread to run over. The eye E also has the part 7?, which may be bent up to form a hook to engage the spring 70 of the key block K. The part it may be dispensed with and then the spring 70 could be attached to a screw or in any other suitable manner. The eye E may be secured in position by the screw as shown in Fig. 8 or in any other suitable manner.
The key block K is provided with the point ;0 that engages the slot 0 (Fig. 8) in the key way W, and so allows the key block K to slide only far enough along the key way W in which it fits snugly, so that its ends and top will be flush with the shuttle body, in which position the key block K is firmly held by the spring is or other suitable means.
The key block K may be made of wood, metal or any desired substance and may be as thin as desired, in which case the eye E as well as the recess R and the keyway W would be raised nearer the top surface of the shuttle S, and still be within the scope of my invention.
In operation the thumb of one hand engages with the thumb notch t in the key block K and slides the key block K along the key way WV into the position shown in Fig. 2, uncovering the eye E and holds it I Copies of this patent may be obtained for there.
