Description

K. SMITH. Shuttle for Looms. No. 228,837.
Patented June 15, 1880.
INVENTOR,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIAN K. SMITH, OF BURRILLVILLE, RHODE ISLAND.
SHUTTLE FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,837, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed October 18, 1879. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN K. SMITH, of Burrillville, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shuttles for Looms, which improvement is fully set forth in the.following specification and accompanying drawlogs.-
The object of my invention is to furnish a device for the body of a shuttle in which the bobbin-spindle may be hinged and kept in its elevated position for charging the bobbin, and when depressed will clamp and hold the bob bin in a working position without any pintles or pins through the sides of the shuttle.
Figure 1 of the drawin gs represents a shuttle having my device for holding the spindle and bobbin when depressed in position for work. Fig. 2 represents a side sectional view. Fig. 3 represents the spindle elevated, showin g the bobbin released from the spring-clamps. Fig. 4 shows the form of the curved arms of the bed-piece.
This invention consists in having a bedpiece for the body of a shuttle provided with curved arms and a spindle provided with spring-clamps, the heel of which is hinged to the shank of said bed-piece in the manner herein shown and described.
In the drawings, Adenotes the shuttle-body, which may be made of wood or metal. 7 denotes the bed-piece, provided with curved arms 5, as shown in Fig. 4-. A shank extends back from the arms, to which the spindle 4 is hinged at the end 2. 1
3 3 denote the spring-clamps attached to the sides of the spindle. 6 denotes the bobbin, and 8 the screw through the bottom of the shuttle. which holds the device in the place to which it is fitted.
By this arrangement, when the spindle, with the bobbin, is depressed between the curved arms of the bed-piece, the spring-clamps are pressed together,.so as to clamp onto the end of the bobbin, while below the narrow contraction of the curved arms the spindle and bobbin are held in position for work, and when raised above the narrow contraction the bobbin is released from the spring-clamps. Thus the pintle-holes and pintles which are found in other forms of construction, and which are a serious objection, are avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the body of a shuttle,
the bed-piece 7, provided with the curved arms 5, and spindle 4, provided with spring-clamps 3 3, substantially as shown and described,- and for the purpose herein set forth.
