Description

-tube b. A slot, c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERLEY LAFLIN, OF WARREN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN J. SPRAGUE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTLES.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 79,483, dated June 30, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERLEY LAFLIN, of
Warren, in the county of Worcester and Uommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a power loom-shuttle with my improvements applied thereto; and Fig. 2 represents a section on line A B, Fig. 1.
To enable those skilled Yin the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the sarlne, I will proceed to describe it more in detai My present improvements have reference to certain devices for facilitating the threading of shuttles, my object being not only to allow the thread to be quickly and readily passed through the quill or tube in the shuttle, but to remove, as far as possible, all liability of its pulling` out after being inserted. These resuits I have obtained by the employment of the device which will now be described.
:In the drawings, a shuttle, A, is shown, with a bobbin, B, upon its spindle, the thread a being passed or drawn through the hole or is cut down through the side C of the shuttle into the hole b; but this slot of itself would not answer the purpose I havein view, since theyarn could not be slipped in conveniently 0r quick enough, while even if once in place it would be liable to pull out.
thread, which is then quickly drawn down overv the inclined part 4 ot' the guide-piece d into the tubular part b, as shown in the drawings. The projecting lipc not only facilitates the threading of the shuttle, but at the same-time prevents the thread from flying out during the operation oi' weaving. Owing to the peculiar manner of fitting in the guide-piece d, in combination with the fastening-pin 1 and shoulder 5 011 the shuttle-wood, it is not liable to become `loosened by its use in the loom. 4
With a little practice the operator can thread one of' my improved shuttles much quicker than by the old practice of sucking?7 the thread through the tube.
Havingdescribed myimproved shuttle, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combinatiomwith the shuttle, ofa threading and guide piece or lip, constructed as described, 'and for the purposes setforth.
PERLEY L AFLIN.
