To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Josnrn FALTUS, citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttle-Eyes; andI do declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shuttle eyes or thread guides for shuttles andthe primary object of the invention is to provide a device which is an improvement over my former Patent N 0. 1,086,446, issued February 10, 1914.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a thread guide or shuttle eye which is simpler, less expensive to manufacture and more eflicient in operation than the one shown in my former patent above referred to.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a thread guide or shuttle eye which will, as also in my former patent above referred to, enable the shuttle to be threaded by a recoil of said thread after the latter has been properly positioned with respect to the eye or guide and sharply severed. 7
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application: Figure l is a plan view of a shuttle having an eye or thread guide constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of a portion of the shuttle with parts in section illustrating clearly the shape of the socket and the manner of applying the thread guide therein; Fig. 3 is a transverse section therethrough as seen on.

In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a shuttle of the usual type having a bobbin 2 suitably mounted therein and the thread on said bobbin leading through a narrow channel or the like 3 adjacent one end of the shuttle to be passed through an improved eye or thread guide which forms the basis of this invention.
My improved thread guide or shuttle eye consists of a base plate or the like il which is designed to fit in a peculiarly shaped socket 5 formed in the shuttle in continuation of the channel 3. The base wall of this socket 5 is inclined somewhat downwardly toward the one side of the shuttle and is tapered smaller toward this side, the end of the socket terminating in the side wall of said shuttle as indicated at 4 A washer plate 6 is applied to the upper face of the base plate 4 and extending through the washer and base plate is a screw 7 which is engaged with the shuttle and secures said base plate in the socket.
Formed on one side edge of the base plate adjacent one end thereof is an extension 8 which is bent or curved to form a substantially tubular portion the same projecting through the reduced or tapered portion 4 of the socket to the side wall of the shuttle. This tubular portion or extension 8 formed on the one side edge of the base plate 4: forms a guide for the thread continuing from the bobbin and I have provided means in connection with this tubular guide portion to aid in threading the shuttle.
Formed on the side edge of the extension 8 which forms substantially the tubular portion and at the inner end thereof is an additional longitudinal extension 9 the free end of which is hooked or bent as shown at 10. This extension 9 projects across the channel way 3 of the shuttle when the device is applied to use and the hooked end of said extension is distorted somewhat upwardly to compensate for the beveled portion of the shuttle immediately adjacent this channel way. It must also be here stated that the inner termination of the extension 8 which forms a substantially tubular portion is in alinement with the channelway 3 as clearly shown in the drawings, and the formation of the additional extension 9 on the one side edge of this extension 8 provides a shoulder 11 in a plane to one side of the longitudinal plane of, this channelway, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth. 7
It must be here stated that the reduced portion at of the socket 4 is larger than the tubular portion 8 of the thread guide and as this tubular member 8 is disposed at one side of said socket, a clearance is left, as
clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4. of the drawings. V
In the operation of the device the thread first enters through the clearance and in order to enable the tubular member 8 to be threaded, a longitudinal slot 8 is provided therein and faces downwardly, when the base plate is positioned in the socket as clearly shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings.
In operation the shuttle is held in one hand and the thread from the bobbin there of taken in the other hand. The thread is then drawn through the channel way 3 and under the hooked end 10 and the extension 9 on the guide. The movement of the thread is continued around until the thread is passed up over the shoulder 11. The hand with the end of said thread is then drawn obliquely upward from the shoulder 11, and rearwardly at an angle from the side of the shuttle opposite the slot until the thread takes a position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The thread will thus be held in direct alinement with the aperture 4 in the side of the shuttle, which position is absolutely necessary for the same to be placed in before the threading operation can be performed. vVhen approximately four inches of thread have been drawn over the shoulder 11, of the extension 9 of the guide, the thread on the bobbin is arrested from any further movement by any means, such as pressing the same against the bobbin by the fingers of the hand holding the shuttle whereupon the thread will be held tautly in the position hereinbefore described. The hand holding the end of the thread is then given a snappy movement outward, but directly in a line with the position of the thread, and such movement will cause the thread to break at a point midway between theshoulder l1 and the operators hand. The recoil from this sudden break will cause a half of the thread between said shoulder and break, to be thrown forward through the opening 4k in the side of the shuttle, it being in direct alinement therewith, whereby the broken end may be readily grasped and guided into the member 8, completing the threading operation and holding the shuttle ready for use. The sloping base of the socket 5 which terminates in an opening in the side of the shuttle at its lower end, will act as a guide for the end of the thread when it recoils from the break, and direct it through the aperture a as above stated. This operation may ,be accomplished, quickly, readily and most in the wall of the shuttle and is parallel j with said sloping base i which act to automatically thread the shuttle by the'operation that has been clearly explained.
In regard to the breaking of the thread at a point midway the shoulder 11 of the guide and an operators hand which is essential to the correct operation of this de-V vice it seems that this result is obtained owing to the factthatthe greatest strain occurs midway between the two fixed points at which points the pulling force is exerted.
From the foregoing, it will, be seen that I have provided simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes inform, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the princi ples of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: r
1. A thread guide consisting of'a shuttle having a vertical socket at one end with a transversely sloping base terminatingat its lower side in an aperture in the side wallof the shuttle, a thread guide in said socket with a projecting shoulder parallel with said base and spaced inwardlyfrom the, said aperture for cooperation with the socket whereby when the thread is pulled taut and broken thereover the loose end of said thread will be thrown forward and outward by the recoil and guided by the slop ing base outwardthrough the aperture in the side wall of the shuttle.
2. A thread guide of'the class described comprising a base plate, an extensionformed on one'side thereof and designed to form-a transverse guide piece, a longitudinallyslotted tube on the outer end of the extension, and an additional extension to provide'a curved shoulder on the inner end of said base plate extension over which the thread is designed to be drawn tight and brokenwhich tends to throw theloose end of the thread forward and outward on'the break ing of'the thread.
3. A thread guide of the class described comprising a base plate, an extension formed on one side thereof and designed to form a transverse guide piece, a longitudinally slotted integral tube on the outer end of the extension side edge thereof adjacent one end adapted to project into the transversely extending aperture in the wall of a shuttle, an additional extension on the inner end of said base plate extension, being parallel with the said base plate to provide a curved shoulder spaced inwardly from said aperture over which the thread is designed to be drawn tight and broken which tends to throw the loose end of the thread automatically forward and outward on the breaking of the thread, and the outer end of said additional extension being hooked.
l. A shuttle guide comprising a base plate having a tubular extension formed on one a longitudinal extension carried by said tubular extension and having a hook-shaped terminal which is adapted to project across &
the channel-way of the shuttle when the device is applied, said hook-shaped terminal being upwardly deflected, a shoulder formed on one side edge of said hook-shaped extension over which the thread is designed to be drawn tight and broken which tends to throw the loose end of the thread automatically 'forward and outward on the breaking of the thread, said tubular member or extension having a longitudinally downwardly facing slot therein.
