Description

c. c. ALGEO.
Improvement in Fasten ers for th Meeting-Rails of Sashes.
No 1I32,945, Patented Nov. 12 1872.
4M. PHOTO-'L/THDBRAPHIC CLL/VXIOSBORNE S PROCESS) UNITED TATES-- PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. ALGEO, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specificationformin g part of Letters Patent No. 132,945, dated November 12, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. ALGEO, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SashLocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a .full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved sash-lock which shall be simple in construction and durable and efi'ective in operation, which shall do away with the use of springs; and it consists in forming the lock in two parts of peculiar construction, whereby the upper and lower sash are each locked and held firmly in place by the automatic movement of the lock improved by my peculiar and novel construction having two radial arms, as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspectiveview of my improved sashlock, and Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of a window-casing, sash, &c., showing the lock in position.
Arepresents the sides B,.the top; and O, the bottom of a window-casin g. D represents the top, and E the bottom sash,-allof which may be of any ordinary or of any desired construction.
' F represents the center-bar of the upper sash,
in which a mortise is made of sufficient size to receive the lock, which is secured firmly therein by screws a a. By placing the look upon the center bar, as described, the sash are held more firmly in place than by placing the lock upon the side of the sash or window-casing, as is frequently done; as by placing the lock in the center neither side of the sash can be raised to the slightest degree. G represents the case of the lock, constructed in the form shown. H represents the catch, pivoted in the case at b, so as to move freely upon said pivot, the part 0 coming in contact with the lower sash is formed upon the arc of a circle whose center is at the pivot 12, the advantage of which is that, no matter how small a portion of the surface 0 is over the lower sash, the sash is held tightly down, as would not be the case with any other swinging catch having an outer surface in any other form than an arc of a cir cle. Just back of said surface 0 is a projection, d, which prevents the catch H from swinging out too far, and also serves as a brace upon the upper inside of the lower sash when any upward pressure is brought to bear upon the lower sash or downward pressure upon the upper sash.
The catch is made heavyor weighted at e, gravitating outward, so that it will lock the sash automatically when the same are closed. To open'the sash it is only necessary to press inward upon the catch and hold the same until the upper sash lowered a short distance, or the lower sash raised, as desired.
The weighted part c of the catch H being cast near the working surface of the catch, and all being connected with the upper or pivot part of the same by the two radial arms a a, the catch is made sufficiently heavy, while much less less material is required in casting the catch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The gravitating catch H having its locking surface 0 upon the arc of a circle whose center forms the point of pivot 12, provided with projection d having two radial arms and combined with the case G and sash D E, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES C. ALGEO.
