//v ms/v TOR Ben 0mm Becker BENJAIVIIN BECKER, OF ST. LQUIS, MISSOURI.
DOOR-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Application filed April 4, 1819. Serial No. 287,448.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BECKER, a citizen of the U1 ited States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved device for opening doors located at a distance from the operator, whether he be situated upstairs, downstairs, or on the same floor on which the door is located; and my in vention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed.
The object of my present invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and reliable improvement upon the door opener shown and described in my United States Patent No. 1,267,307, dated May 21, 1918, which can be readily applied to doors and door-locks already in use, as well as to new ones.
A further object of my invention is to provide an especially simple combined attaching and stop bracket, whereby the door-opening lever may be quickly applied to the door-knob shank by means of a single screw.
In the drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a door and its lock, having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a detail side-elevation of my improved door-opening lever applied to the door and its lock, the shank of the door-knob being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a detail edge-view of the same, looking toward the right-hand edge of the device, shown in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan-view of the same.
The numeral 1 designates any common door, say the front door of a fiat or apartment, which is to be unlocked and opened by a person in the room or hall above, or in the hall at a distance from said door, or several floors above or below the door.
The door 1 is fitted, as usual, with any suitable frame and easing 2, lock 8, having a bolt 3 whizh engages a keeper 4 on said door-frame, and door-knob, 5, having the usual shank 6 and re tanguar spindle 7.
Upon said shank 6 of said door-knob I 8, carrying at their lower or inner ends a' horizontal bar or pin 10 which is the pivot of said lever.
In this present illustration of my inven tion, the said pivot 10 rests directly against the said shank 6 of said doorknob, but is permitted to move loosely thereon, or rather.
to rock loosely, by resting within a. bearing or recess 11 formed in the inner curved face of a combined attaching and stop bracket 12.
Said bracket 12 is quickly aflixed to the said door-knob shank 6 by means of a single screw 13 which passes through a hole in said bracket and is threaded so that its threaded portion reaches to and engages the usual threads of a perforation in said rectangular spindle 7, thereby firmly securing both the bracket and the knob shank in position, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
Said bracket 12 has an integral stop-arm 14: which extends at one end of said bracket in the path of the lower end of said lever, when said lever is moved toward the lefthand, in opening the door, and thereby acts as a stop to limit said motion with respect to the bracket, and to cause the bracket to move (to turn the knob) as said motion continues.
On the left-hand of said lever 8 is formed a rounded portion 15, in the lower portion of which is a bore or spring-seat 15 in which is a. coil spring 16, the lower end of which extends beyond the inner end of said portion 15 and rests in another spring-seat or recess 17 formed in the outer surface of said stoparm 14 of said bracket, so that said spring will return said lever to its normal position after the knob 5 has been turned and said bolt 3 has been retracted from its keeper 4 by the aztion of said lever.
Said spring '16 also holds said lever yieldingly in its normal position, and thereby permits said bolt 3 to be retracted in turning the said knob by hand in a clockwise direct on, in the us'ial manner, Without disturbing the position of said lever, which will remain in its normal position when said knob is turned by direct contact of the hand.
The normal position of said lever S is that in which it is shown in the various views of the drawing.
An opening 19 is made in the inner end of said lever 8, between the said parallel arms 10, to permit the insertion of the bracket, in assembling the devire, the portion of the braaket which carries said stop 1% being made sufliciently narrow to be passed through said opening.
A cord, chain, wire, or similar flexible member 18 has one of its ends attached to the eye 9 at the free end of the lever 8, and is then extended to a common pulley 20 on the wall or door-casing of the building, and from thence to another pulley 21, and thence to another pulley 22 located at a distance, or
at whatever point the operator may be stationed, where a suitable handle 23 is attached to the operating end of said flexible member.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood without further description.
I do not limit myself to the exact form of the lever 8 and other partsshoWn in the drawing, nor do I limit myself to the exact size or proportions of said parts of the device, as it is apparent that the same may be changed by skilled mechanics, Within the scope of my invention.
1 claim:
1. In a door opening device, a bracket having a. curved face adapted to engage a door knob shank, said bracket having an opening to receive a retaining screw and a lever stop-arm at one side, a lever pivoted to said bracket and having a stop to cooporate with said stop-arm, the stop on said lever being provided with a recess, a spring projecting into said recess at one end and abutting the stop-arm on the bracket at the other end, and means connected to the free end of said lever for actuating the same.
2. In a door opening device, the combination with the shank of a door-knob, of a bracket having a curved face adapted to engage said shank, and having at one side an integral lever stop-arm, a screw for fastening said bracket to the said shank, said bracket also having formed in it a bearing for the pivot of an operating lever, said bracket also having a spring-seat, a spring in said spring-seat, a lever having a pivot at its inner end mounted in said bearing of said bracket, a rounded portion forming a stop by contact with the said stop-arm, adjacent the inner end of said lever, said rounded portion having a. spring-seat formed in it in which the outer end of the said spring is mounted, and means connected to the free end oi the lever for actuating the same.
In testimony whereol I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN BECKER.
