DECK-SASH SUPPORT.
Application filed December 1'7, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS N. .lJTFlNAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deck- Sash Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to deck sash suports, and has more particular reference to an improved hinge, by means of which mounted in the deck frames or jambs of cars and the like.
The object is to provide a deck sash holder of a construction which admits of the ready removal and positioning of the sashes in the deck frame; which admits of the adjustment of the sash into various angles for the purposes of ventilation; and which yieldingly retains the sashes in adjusted position. I
Another important object of this invention is the provision of a deck sash holder which is so constructed as to readily release the sash and admit of the removal thereof through either side of the deck frame, and thus prevent injury to the screening or ot er fixtures supported by or arranged closely adjacent to the deck.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an outer side elevation of a deck sash support constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an outer end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken longitudinally through the device.
Fig. l is a transverse section taken through the device intermediate the ends thereof, certain parts being removed and parts being shown in dotted lines and in various adjusted positions.
Fig. 5 is a similar section looking in the direction opposite from that of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, there is disclosed but a single support although it is to be understood that the supports are to be used in pairs, one arranged upon each end of the deck sash and secured to the adjacent ortion of the deck frame or jambs.
In the present disclosure the device comprises a body part or bracket made up of Specification of Letters Patent.

an attaching plate 10 of triangular or other suitable shape provided with openings 11 near two of its corners adapted to receive attaching screws or the like for securing plate 10 to the frame or jamb of the deck. The apex or third corner of the plate 10 is provlded with a bearing opening 11 of substantial size, The slate 10 is provided intermediate its ends with a pair of spaced apart bars 12 connected at their outer ends by cross-piece 13 which is preferably detachably mounted on the bars 12 by means of lugs 141 and screws 15. The lugs 14; project inwardly from the cross-piece 13 and are adapted to lie against the inner opposite faces of the bars 12. The bracket is also provided with an intermediate plate 16 forming a brace and which is recessed at opposite edges to receive the bars 12 therein, the pltte 16 being arranged mid-way between the opposite ends of the bars.
The bracket is provided with a longitudinally shiftable bearing and latch-bolt 17 which is slidably mounted in the cross-piece 13 and the brace 16, the cross-piece and the plate conforming substantially to the contour of the base-plate 10, and the bolt 17 being mounted in the outer ends of the same inaxial alinement with the bearing opening 11 of the base-plate. The end of the bolt adjacent the base-plate 10 is provided with a relatively large journal portion 18 adapted to fit in the opening 11 and support a disk 19 thereon arranged against the inner side of the plate 10. The disk 19, as shown in detail in Fig. 5 is provided preferably with a flat side adapted to bear against the plate 10 and is provided on its opposite side with a segmental corrugated portion 20 presenting radial corrugations an extending substantially one-third over the surface of the disk. The disk 19 is also provided with a laterally extending flange 21 adapted to bear against the frame on the deck side and having screw openings therein to receive screws or the like for securing the flange 21 to the deck side. The flange 21 is preferably located at the marginal edge of thedisk 19 adjacent the corrugations 20 to dispose the latter at the outer side of the vertical plane of the axis of the disk.
The bolt 17 is provided, near the journal 18 thereof, with an integral or otherwise suitably and fixedly mounted disk 22 conforming in contour and size to the disk 19. The disk 22 is provided upon one face with radial corrugations 23 extending throughout holds the disk 19 from turning. The corrugations are provided with rounded surfaces adapted to admit of the yielding of the corrugations past one another when the. disk 19 is forced about the journal 18 for adjusting the deck sash in various degrees of inclination, such as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 52, 4t and 5.
The cross-piece 13 is provided with an outstanding lug 26 upon its inner end to which is pivoted a lever 27. One end of the lever 27 is forked and provided with a longitudinal slot 28, and is adapted to receivebetween the fork arms the flattened extremity 29 of the bolt 17. A pin 30 is secured transversely through the slot 28 and the extremity 29 to connect the lever to the bolt. The lever 27 is preferably arched inwardly toward the cross-piece 13 intermediate its ends to space the connected end of the leverfrom the bracket, and the other end of the lever is adapted to be swung upon its pivotal connection with the lug 26 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 for retracting the bolt 17 and withdrawing the journal 18 from the opening 11. When the bolt is retracted the disks are separated, and the disk 19 may be readily withdrawn from the bracket. The free end of the, lever 27 is spaced from the deck sash, and extends inga direction away from the same so that when a tool is employed for swinging the. lever. 27, and should the tool slip there is no 19 to hold the bolt and connected thereto within the bracket for urging said journal danger of injuring the deck sash. Furthermore, this location of the lever 27 admits free accessitheretoi-and admits the ready application of a tool, or the hand to the lever. The disk-19 may of course be withdrawn from the bracket through the top, the bottom, 'or-the outer side thereof, and the deck In a deck sash support, the combination of a bracket including a pair of spaced parallel cross plates having alined openings, a bolt slidably engaging 1n said openings and provided with an enlarged ournaled portion on one end adapted to enter the opening in one of said plates, a spring coiled about said into said opening, a locking member formed integrally with the bolt near the journaled end thereof, a second locking member rotatably mounted on said journaled end and adapted to be clamped between one of said bracket plates and said first named locking. lever for returning the: rotatable locking lever in various adjusted positions about the journal, a bracket formed upon the bracket plate remote from the bracket plate engaged by said journaled ends, mounted upon said bracket and having one end bifurcated and slotted, a pin extending through said slot and through'said bolt for connecting the lever and bolt to shift the bolt longitudinally upon shiftablemovement of the lever.
