Description

L. 1, WEST.
WINDOW SASH HOLDER.
' APPLICATION FILED MAR-23.1916.

LEWIS J. WEST, OF BRIDGETON, NEW JERSEY.
. WINDOW-SASH HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, I916.
Application filed March 23, 1916. Serial No. 86,251.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnwrs J. WEs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVindow- Sash Holders, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to window sash holders and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder of simple and durable structure adapted to be applied to a window sash and which may effectually hold the same at an adjusted position in a window frame without the use of sash weights or cords as generally employed.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side view of a window sash with parts in section showing the parts of the holder in one position. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the holder showing the parts thereof in another position.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the sash 1 to which the device is applied is of usual pattern with the exception that the said sash is provided at one side with a recess 2. The sash is movably mounted in a window frame 3 as usual. A shoe 4; is movably mounted in the recess 2 and may be formed from wood or other suitable material. A. metallic strip 5 is applied to the inner side of the shoe 4- and one end of a flat spring 6 is secured to one end of the strip 5. The other end of the said spring bears against the opposite end portion of the said strip and may move thereon. The intermediate portion of the spring 6 is bowed away from the intermediate portion of the strip 5. 4
A lever 7 is fulcrumed at the intermediate portion of the spring 5 and the free end portion of the said lever extends beyond the inner edge of the side of the sash 1. A link 8 is pivotally connected at one end with the lever 7 at a point between the free end of the said lever and the fulcrumed point thereof and the other end of the link 8 is pivotally connected with the intermediate portion of the strip 5. The fulcrumed point of the lever 7 is at one side of the median longitudinal dimension thereof and the pivotal point between the link 8 and the said lever is at the opposite side of the said median longitudinal dimension of the lever. Consequently it will be seen that when the free end of the lever 7 is swung to an upward direction thelink 8 moves the shoe 4 in an outward direction whereby the outer surface of the said shoe may frictionally engage the side of the window frame 3. Inasmuch as the intermediate portion of the spring 6 bears against the bottom or inner wall of the recess 2 the said spring will resiliently hold the shoe 4: in frictional contact with the frame 3 whereby the sash 1 is held at an adjusted position -in the said frame. l/Vhen the free end of the lever 7 is swung in a downward direction the link 8 withdraws the shoe 4 from the side of the frame 8 and thus there is sufficient space or clearance between the sash and the window frame to permit the said sash to be moved freely along the window frame. The change in the relative position of the shoe 4: with respect to the edge of the sash 1 during the swinging movement of the lever 7 is due to the fact that the link 8 is pivotally connected with the said lever at one side of the median longitudinal dimension thereof whereas the fulcrumed point of the said lever is located at the opposite side of the said dimension.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a sash holder of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be easily and quickly manipulated to hold the sash at an adjusted position in a window frame and also may be moved to release the sash whereby it may be raised or lowered freely.
IIaving described the invention what is claimed is 1. In combination with a sash a sash holder comprising a shoe movably mounted with relation to the sash, a spring exerting its tension against the shoe, a lever fulcrumed to the spring and a link pivotally connected at one end with the lever and pivotally connected at its other end with the shoe.
2. In combination with a sash a holder comprising a shoe, movably mounted with relation to the sash, a spring exerting its tension against the shoe, a lever fulcrumed In testimony whereof I .aflix my signato the spring at a. point at one side of the ture in presence of two Witnesses.
