F. JACHIMSTAL HINGE FOR STORM sAsHEs Filed Nov. lO. 1925 Patented Aug. 30, 1927.
UNITED STATES FRED JACI-IIMSTAL, 0F MANITOWOG, WISCONSIN.
HINGE FOR STORM SASHES.
Application led November 10, 1925. Serial No. 68,141.
The invention relates to hinges and particularly to hinges for securing in position storm sashes on windows and has for its object the provision of means for hinging storm windows by whichl the storm sash may be installed in the window frame and removed therefrom by manipulation from the inside of the building and comprises hinge members'including socket members adapted to be secured to the outside of the window frame and grating members adapted to be secured to the outer side of the storm sash, one of said members on the sash being provided with a fixed stud to engage in a sock- 5 et on the frame, and the other member provided with a spring projected boit to engage in the other socket on'the frame, said member being also provided with means for retracting the bolt by manipulation from the inside of the storm sash so that the sash may be installed or removed, as stated, from the inside of the building.
The invention will be described indetail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view ofthe upper fragment of a window frame and storm sash showing the in'iproved hinges in'position,
Figure 2, a similar view showing the hinge members partly in section,
Figure 3, a vertical sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 1, and
Figure tis a horizontal, fragmental sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
In the drawings, similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
As heretofore stated the invention is designed to provide means by which storm sashes may be installed and removed from the window Yframe by manipulation. from the interior of the building, and in the drawings the window frame is indicated at A,
and the storm sash at B. The hinge members, that are the subject matter of the invention, comprises socket members 1, adapted to be secured to the window frame A, and having sockets 2 with cylindrical bores.
Secured to the storm sash B are the inating members of the hinges. One of these members is shown at 8 and is 'provided with a fixed stud or pin 4L and adapted to engage in one of the sockets 2. The other hinge member designated 5 is provided with a cylinder 6 in which is slidablj7 mount-ed a cylindrical bolt 7 having a stem S that eX- t-ends through an opening in the end of the cylinder 6 and, is provided also with a longitudinal slot 9 adjacent the outer Aend of the stem, the bolt 7 adapted to engage in a socket member 2 as shown in Figure 2. Bolt 7 is normally projected by means of a spring 10 enclosing` the stem 8 and engaging said bolt 7 and the outer end of the cylinder 6'.
yA shaft 11 is journaled in the member 5 and has an arm 12 secured thereto and en gaging in slot 9. lVhen the hinge member 5 is installed on the storm sash B, a threaded'bushing 13 engages the upper stile of the sash, as shown, and forms a journal for the shaft 11. Secured to the inner end of the shaft 11 is a lever 14 and provides for ma nipulation of the bolt 7 from the inside of the building. When the storm sash is in the position shown in the drawings, and it is desired to remove the storm sash, it will be apparent that by pressing the lever 14 downwardly, the arm 12 will be moved away from the cylinder 6 and because of its engagement in the slot 9 in the stem 8, the bolt 7 will be withdrawn from the socket 2. This will enable the operator to move the sash B outwardly of the window frame A and the stud 4: may then be released from engagement with the other socket 2 and the sash may then be taken into the building through the window. By reversing the operation, the storm sash may be installed by manipulation from the interior of the building.
What is claimed is :--V
`A hinge comprising two members, one of said members including a socket, a cylinder on the other member, la cylindrical bolt in said cylinder and adapted to engage in said socket, a stem on said bolt and having a longitudinal slot, a spring enclosing thc stem and normally tending' to project the bolt, a shaft j ournaled on the last mentioned member, an. arm secured to said shaft and engaging'in the slot, and a lever secured to the shaft, said arm by directly engaging said bolt providing means to project and retract it.
. In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
