Description

C. L. MERRILL.
Improvement in Hot Plate-Lifters.
No. 132,848. Patented Nov.5,1872.
.Att rs AM. PHOTU-UTfi/OGRAPHIG CllMY/OSBORNES FHOCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES L. MERRILL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOT-PLATE LIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 132,848, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. MERRILL, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hot-Plate Lifters, of which the following is a specification:
, My improvement relates to the handle of a hot-plate lifter and it consists in providing it with rings for the thumb and fingers, so that it may be more firmly grasped and more easily manipulated than the plate-lifters heretofore in use.
The plate-lifter shown in the drawing is made of a single piece of heavy spring-wire. This wire is bent at its middle so as to form a helical spring, A, of several coils-as many as may be deemed necessary to give it the desired strength and elasticity. The ends of the wire are then passed along parallel with each other to form the handles 0 0, being, however,
. coiled'once to form the rings B B on the outside of the handles. At the points F F the ends of the wire are bent approximately into the form of a quarter-circle, being curved at E E so as to fit the rim of a plate, and then passed back, as shown in the drawing, and firmly secured at the points F F;
' I am aware that plate-lifters provided with jaws of the character shown in the drawing are not new; also, that the two members of a plate-lifter have previously been connected by means of a spiral spring placed at the base of the handles. I do not, therefore, claim either of these elements as my invention; but my improvement consists in applying rings to the handles of a plate-lifter provided with jaws, which are suitably connected together so as to render the instrument more convenient and efficient in use.
This being the gist of my invention, I do not propose to confine myself to the precise mode herein shown and described for forming the jaws and for connecting them together, although I prefer the modes now shown, it being evident that other modes of forming the jaws and of uniting them may be adopted without in any way affecting the improvement which I have devised.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- p A plate-lifter composed of the handles CC provided with the rings B B, the jaws D D, and the spring A, or their equivalents, substantially as described.
, C. L. MERRILL. Witnesses:
