Be it known that T. HERBERT Ivnnsmv, a subject of Christian K, King of Denmark, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Tllinois, hare invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a separable button having a head secured to neck and base members equipped with a pin arranged to be passed through an interposed fabric and detachably engage a locking disk upon the opposite side of the fabric. The object of my invention is to provide a secure and desirable fastening means for a button of this class, whereby the button may be quickly and easily applied, and as readily removed if desired, without injuring the cloth, thus enabling the position of the but ton to be changed to suit the wearer of any garment to which it may be applled, or removed while the garment is being laundried, or to permit the button to be applied to another garment. With the foregoing and incidental objects and advantages in view I have invented the separable button hereinafter described in detail, the essential elements of my invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The same reference characters designate the same parts in all the figures of the draw- 111 Tieferring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the upper or outer member A of my separable button comprises a head portion 1 which constitutes the button proper, a neck or shank 2 and a foot plate or base plate 3, all of which parts may in many cases be conveniently formed integrally, although if desired they may be formed separately and secured together in any convenient manner. axially of the neck 2 is an L-shaped point ed locking pin at which preferably is formed of metal of maximum strength and stiffness. The shaft of the pin in the present instance, and preferably, extends through the base plate 3 into the neck 2 of the button. If desired the pin may be thickened adjacent its bend to strengthen it at that point.

The locking disk B which constitutes the lower or inner member of my device and is preferably of the same diameter as the foot plate 3 of the member A is formed with a radial slot 5 to permit insertion there through of the locking pin a, the central portion of the lower face of the disk being cut away to form a spiral cam 6 which rises gradually from its lowest point on one side of the slot to its highest point on the 0pposite side. This cam is arranged to cooperate with the end portion of the locking pin, and the circular peripheral wall or rim 6 serves to protect the pin point and prevent its accidental dislodgment after the button is applied to a garment.

The locking disk is preferably made as thin as possible in order that the cam may have a relatively slight pitch, with consequent strong wedging action, and to avoid an undesirable inward protuberance. If desired, the lower face of the disk may be covered or faced to conceal the cam surface and the end of the locking pin, and the disk may be formed with engaging faces adapted to cooperate with a wrench to facilitate fastening the members together.

It will be understood from the foregoing description that the button may readily be appliee to a garment by passing the locking pin t of the member A through the fabric and engaging the member B therewith by passing the pin through its slot 5, and giving one of the members a rotary movement to clamp them together on the interposed fabric. When the button is removed by a reverse operation, the fabric will be but slightly, if at all marred, owing to the fact that it was penetrated only by a pointed, slender, needle-like member. The fastening is nevertheless secure, since the tensile strength of the pin is sufficient to clamp the base plate 3 of the member A and the locking disk B (both of which have extended engaging faces) tightly together. These two cooperating faces may be plain, as shown in Fig. 2, or one or both may be more or less cupped, as in the modified form of my invention hereinafter described, and illustrated in Fig. 6.

The length of the shaft of the locking pin is of course such that when applied to the fabric for which it is designed the end portion of the pin will cooperate with the cam surface 6 of the locking disk to clamp the members firmly against the fabric, and preferably the shaft should be slightly less in length than the thickness of the cam at its highest point, in order that the parts may be locked together without the interposition of a fabric.

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a modified form of locking slot in the locking disk, and a locking pin adapted to cooperate therewith in which the shaft of the pin, marked 7, has a diameter greater than the width of the end portion 8 of the pin, the inner end 9 of the slot being enlarged to receive the pin shaft 7, a construction which prevents the pin from slipping away from its central position in the locking disk.

As shown in Fig. 6, the button head,

marked 10, may be flexibly connected. to the looped end of the pin 11 by means of a ring fastened to it, or otherwise flexibly connected, instead of being connected rigidly to the neck portion of the button member, as in the form of my invention first above described.

From the description of my invention above given it will be obvious that my novel separable buttons may be very quickly applied, and that they are therefore well adapted for use in the manufacture of clothing in large quantities, particularly such as is made of rather thick material, as for instance, coats, trousers, and mens garments generally, and that in the manufacture of uniforms and other varieties of clothing which it is in'iportant to supply quickly much time and labor can be saved. It is further 0bvious that my invention may be applied to other articles than clothing, and that it may he used to fasten together layers or plies of any sort of material as paper or leather and may be used for attaching such articles as rings, buckles, or the like to curtains of tents or other articles made of textile fabrics, or to thin material of any sort.

I claim:

1. A separable button comprising a button head and a base plate to which said button head secured, an L-shaped metal pin being secured to said base plate, and a locking disk cooperating with'said pin and arranged to clamp an interposed fabric against said base plate.

2. A separable button comprising a button head and a base plate to which said but: ton head is secured, an L-shaped metal pin being secured to said base plate, and a locking disk formed with a spiral cam cooperating with said pin and arranged to clamp an interposed fabric against said base plate.

3. A separable button comprising a but ton head and neck and base plate members rigidly secured thereto, said base plate being equipped with an L-shaped metal pin secured axially of the neck member, and a locking disk cooperating with said pin and arranged to clamp an interposed fabric against said base plate.

4:. A separable button comprisinga button head and integral neck and base plate members to which said button head is secured, said neck and base plate members being equipped with an L-shaped metal pin extending through the base and into the neck, and a locking disk cooperating with said pin and arranged to clamp an interposed. fabric against said base plate.

In a separablebutton or the like, fastening means comprising a base plate secured to the button and an L-shaped pointed pin having its shaft secured to said plate, and a locking disk having on its outer face a spiral cam cooperating with the end portion of said pin.

6. In a separable button or the like, fastening means comprising a base plate secured to the button and an L-shaped pointed pin having its shaft secured to said plate, and a locking disk formed with a radial slot for the insertion of the pin and having on its outer face a spiral cam cooperating with the end portion of said pin.
