Description

w. L. HAVYNL MATTRESS. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 2. I919- Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
I [N VENTOR 1 v A'TTORNEY WILLIAM L. HAWN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ARCH KAVANAGH, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted J an. 13, 1920.
. Application iua October 2, 1919. Serial No. 323,017.
' To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. HAWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains. to make and use the --same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings,.and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to mattresses and particularly to a method of forming a welt edge around the top and bottom of the mattress to assist in maintaining the mattress in'shape and to present a more symmetrical appearance to the finished product.
It is well known that mattresses have a tendency to break down atthe edges and various attempts have been made to eliminate this tendency.
I have provided means whereby the mattress tick or covering may be sewed preliminary to introducing the filling, and tufting the same so that a substantially rectangular mattress will be formed with vertical edges which will not so easily break down as mattresses constructed under the known methods prior to my invention.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to fold the tick or covering back upon itself in laps spaced apart a sufiicient distance so that when the edges of the laps are brought to ether, acylindrical loop or welt may be formed by introducing filling material, sewing the meeting edges of the laps by a line of stitching and finally inverting the tick or covering so that the welts are on the outer I edges, thereby forming a reinforcement around the entire upper edge as well as around the entire lower edge.
In the drawings,
Figure I is a perspective view of a portion of a mattress constructed in accordance with,
ortion of the mattress,
Beferringnow to the drawings by numerals of reference:
1 designates a tick or flexible covering for the mattress, which may be formed into a bag or cover. The edges of the bag or cover are first folded backin the form of laps 2 and 8, which ma be sewed together within the edges of the l ap's by lines of stitching 4: and 5, the laps belng spaced apart so tiat when the edges 6 and .7 are brought together, they maybe sewed in the form of a' welt loo 8.
reparatory to sewin'w the edges together, however, the loop 8 is filled with a'suitable fibrous material 9 and then the edges are sewed together as at 10 to close the loop. For convenience in. sewing, the loop is formed on the inside of the bag or coverlng and after the. loop is closed by the lines of stitching '10, the bag is inverted or turned inside out, so that the .welts are on the outside of the covering, as indicated in Figs. I
and III. The mattress may then be filled with suitable fibrous material 11 and promaintain the mattress in a true rectangular form, reducing the liability of the edges breaking down when in service.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: r
1. The method of forming mattresses which consists in folding back the edgesof a sheet of material to form laps spaced apart, stitching the laps together inside the edges thereof, introducing a filling material in the space between the laps, securing the edges of the laps together to form a welt, forming a bag, and introducing the filling material into the bag.
2. The method of forming mattresses which consists in folding back material to provide laps spaced apart, then introduclng material in the space between the laps, sewing the edges of the laps together to form welts, connecting the edges of the material to provide a bag with the welts on the edges of the bag, and introducing a filling material into the bag.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
