TEHNE.
Application filed March 6,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS JOEL BENNETT, a citizen of the United States residin at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and tate of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Mattresses and Methods 0 Making Same, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a continuation of and substitute for application No. 314.,288,-filed July 30, 1919, and the invention relates to mattresses and the methods of making the same, and has for an object to provide an improved mattress made by an improved method whereby the boxing about the edge of the mattress is made as a separate structure and applied to the mattress independentlyo'f the cover.
Further objects of the invention is to provide a mattress wherein the edge ordinarily referred to as the boxing is constructed and stuffed separately from the mattress and is applied by sewing to the top and bottom of tie mattress whereby the top and bottom may be removed independently of the boxing, or the boxing may be removed independently of the top and bottom as necessity of renovation may require.
With these and other objects in yiew the device comprises certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts and etc s of method as will be hereinafter more in] y de- 4 scribed and claimed.
cover member 3 Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made :1 art hereof, and on which similar reference 0 aractcrs indicate similar parts.
Figure is a transverse sectional view through the boxing of the mattress.
Fig. 2, a perspective view of an indeterminatelength of the boxing before being applied to th mattress, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a fragment of a mattress with the boxing applied.
In making a mattress in accordance with the method of the present invention a. strip of material of indeterminate length indicated at l and of a width corresponding to the thickness of the required mattress plus the turned ver edge portions 2 is used as a base. To this base ortion 1 thecovermemher 3 is secured 'iy stitching 4 inserted through the turned edges 2 and with the stalling material 5 inserted between the Specification 0! Letters Patent.

within the cover ma be inserted in any approved manner, he ore or after the cover member 3 has been applied, and is manipulated in any approved manner so that the stitches are inserted ad'acent the edges of the strip 1 and form r0 1s 7, t0. produce the ordinary and desired rolled edge found in the usual mattress.
For the urpose of compacting the stalling 5 and sti ening the box structure stitching 8 is employed in any approred manner as in the form of quiltin as shown more particularly at Fig. 2. he cover member 3 in addition to having sufficient width to inclose the stalling and produce the edge roll 8 is also of sufiicient width to produce the strips 9 extending the entire length of such boxing structure. The boxing structure so constructed is a complete structure in itself and may be made in any desired length or indeterminate lengths and severed into proper lengths for use. In whatever manner the boxing structure is made it is attached to the top and bottom fabric 10 by means of stitches 11 extending. entirely around the top or bottom and the major portion of the distance around the other member leaving an opening indicated at 12 in Fi 3 for inserting the mattress stuffing 13, a so shown in that figure. In turning the boxing strip about. the corners of the top and bottom 10 folds or gathers 14 are formed. After sewing up the opening 12 the mattress is tufted in the usual manner as indicated at 15.
While forming no part of the patent-able features of the present invention the boxing strip as disclosed at Fig. 2 will be constructed on a sewing machine especially adapted for the purpose. whereby the entire boxing strip will be sewed simultaneously and can therefore he. constmcted by anyone competent to run an ordinary sewing machine. -It is also sewed to the top and bottom 10 by anyone who can run a sewing machine and after being so sewed is turned through the opening 12 before being stuffed. I
Having thus fully described my said mveution. what I claim as new and desire in secure by Letters Patent. is:
1. The method of making a mattress vousisting in producing a boxing including spared edge rolls and sewing the boxing so constructed to the top and bottom fahriv of the mattress.
2. The method of Ina-king a mattress con- Patented Oct. 12, 1920. i
sisting in making a boxing of spaced stuffed fabrics having spaced free edges and securin the free edges to the be or of the top and bottom of a mattress fabric, respectively.
8. The method of making a. mattress consisting in employing a striplof base material, a strip of material wider t an the base strip with stufling introduced between the strips, stitchin through the strips to produce corner rolfi and attachin the structure so formed to the border e ges of the, top and bottom fabric of a. mattress.
4. Themethod of making a mattress consisting in enploying a strip of base material, a sccon stri of material wider than the base stri an extending at both ed s beyond thease strip, introducing stu ng between the strips, sewing through the stri s to produce corner rolls, and attachin t e extended edges to the border edges 0 the top and bottom fabric of a mattres.
5. The method of making a mattress consisting in employing a strip of base material, a strip of material secured to the base stri and wider than said base strip exten ing be and the base strighat both edges, stitching lfhrough the stu g and both strips extending the edges over the edges of the top and bottom fabr cs of a mattress and securing the extended edges to such top and bottom fabrics.
6. The method of making a mattress consisting in employing a base strip, a second strip secured to the base strip and presenting fullness as compared to the base strip between the securin lines and extending beyond the edges 0 the base strip, introducing stufling between the strips, employing part of the fullness of thesecond strip to produce a corner roll embracing a part of the stufling, and securing the boxing so formed to the border edges of the top and bottom fabric of a mattress.
7. The method of making a mattress in employing a base strip, a second strip sufficiently wider than the base strip to extend upon its opposite edges, introducing stalling material into the fol ness of the second mentioned stri gathering a portion of the stuilin' ma rial into a roll at one side of the strip, stitchi through the two strips to comp etc the r0 1 and inclose the stuiling material, stitching through the two stri s and the stufling, material for stifiening e structure, and stitchin the extended edges of the strip to the b0 er edges of the p and bottom fabric of a mattress.
8. The method of making a mattress consisting in em loying a base stripba second strip1 snfiieien y wider than the use strip so 1: at when stitched thereto by stitching parallel with the ed es of both strips the edges of the second rip extend beyond the 'edges of the base strip and produce a fullrial, top and bottom rial top and bottom boxing independently of and a apted to attached to a mattress.
10. The step in the method of makin a mattress consisting in reducing an .in eterminate length of roll edge boxing proportioned to be secured about the edge of a mattress.
11. The step in the method of maki a mattress consisting in producin a roll e e boxing having inner and outer abric strips with stufling material interposed between and adapted to be secured as an organization to a mattress.
12. A mattress comprising top and bottom fabric members, stufiin introduced between the top and bottom is ric members, and a boxing extending about the edges of the stufiing and having free edges extending a limited distance inwardly upon the top and bottom and attached to the edges of the top and bottom fabric, respectively.
13. A mattress com rising stu matcbfics embraci the stufiing material and smaller in all dimensions than the required dimensions of the mattress, and a boxing member extendin about the sides of the stuiiing material an over the top and bottom thereof and connected to the top and bottom fabrics.
14. A mattress com rising stufiing mate- El-bliCS embracing the stuiiing material, and a boxin member secured about and to the edges 0 the to and bottom fabrics and embodyin spaced ihbrie strips and corner rolls wit independent bodies of stufling therein.
A 15. A roll edge boxing for a tufted mattress comprising a tube having fill and edge extenslons, the latter adap to be stitched to the mattress is tie in over lapping relation with tufted portions of the mattress and secured to the latter by the tufting thereof.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Memphig)Tennessee, this 16th day of February, A. nineteen hundred and tweng.
