To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 012011. FRAY Sesame, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel, in the county of Cedar and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Opening Gates and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gates and more particularly for gates for drive ways, and the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved gate,
which is so formed, that the same can be opened and closed from a vehicle approaching or leaving the gate, so as to eliminate the necessity of getting out of the vehicle for operatingthe gate.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an improved gate for drive ways, having a flexible cable extending from a pair of spaced posts, one of which is placed at each side of the gate, the free ends of the cable being connected to the gate at each side thereof, so that upon suitable movement of the cable, the gate will be pulled open or closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means 'extending through the spaced posts for operating the latch of the gate, so that the latch thereof can be operated at the same time the operating cable is pulled.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved gate of the above character, which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufac-- ture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, formation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof and in which:

Referring to the drawings in. detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved gate, of the ordinary structure or any preferred. structure and the same is pivoted as at 2 to a gate post 3 and the opposite end of the gate is provided with a locking lever 4, which is adapted to engage the stationary keeper 5, which is cured to the inner face of the gate posts 6. The latch 4 is pivoted as at 7 to a bracket 8 secured to the outer side edges of the gate 1 and a coil spring 9 has one end secured to the same and the oppositeend secured to the post and normally holds the lever in position with the stationary keeper 5 which has its face bifurcated as at 6 to receive the same. The stationary keeper 5 includes a suitable angle member having an attaching portion 11 secured by suitable fastening elements 12 to the post 6.
A pair of spaced posts. 13 and 1e are em bedded in the ground on each side of the gate post 3 and are in alinement therewith and parallel with the road. The inner posts 13 are formed relatively shorter than the. outer posts 14-, which are formed of a suflicient height, so as to enable the gate to be operated from a vehicle. I
The outer posts 14 have inwardly extending brackets 15 secured to their upper ends as at 16 which consists of a horizontal portion 17 having a terminal 18 which has secured thereto a suitable pulley block 18. A diagonal brace block 20 connects the end of the bracket with the post 14:, and the lower end of the bracket is provided with a suitable eye 21 which receives the fastening element 22 for holding the same in position. An outwardly extending arm 23 is secured to the lower end of the post 14 in alinement with the upper end of the post 13 and the arm 23 is positioned directly below the coiled end 18 of the upper bracket 15. The free end of the arm is bent outwardly as at 24 and the bracket 25 is secured to the arm in spaced relation to the bent end 24 and a pulley 25 is journaled between the arm 24; and the bracket 25. The inner posts 18 at their upper ends are provided with a notch portion 27 in which is fitted arms 28 which extend toward the posts 14 and the arms have extensions 29 formed on the sides of the same adjacent to the free end thereof, which are bent outwardly in spaced parallel relation to each other and a pulley 30 is journaled between the same.
A flexible cable 31 is placed through the pulley block 19 and then extended downwardly therefrom to provide vertical operat ing portions 32 and is threaded through the pulleys 26 and then through the pulleys 30 and one terminal of the same is connected as at 33 to one side of the gate and the other terminal is connected to the opposite sid of the gate thus permitting a downward pull on either one of the vertical portions of the cable to swing the gate open in opposite direction from the post, from which the rope was operated, so as to allow vehicles to pass through the same. The vertical portions of the cable 32 are pulled upwardly, when it is desired to close the same. A time ible cable 34 is provided for operating the pivoted latch 4: and the free end thereof is bent upwardly as at 35 and coiled to form an attaching eye. The cable 34: is threaded through an eye 36 secured to the outer end of the gate and through an eye 37 secured to the inner end of the gate and then through a suitable eye 38 secured to the top of the gate post 3. The cable 34: is divided to provide a pair of operating ends 39 which are threaded through eyes 40 secured to the upper end of the post 14 and then downwardly through the eye 11 fastened upon the sides of the post 14 and the same terminate in suitable handpulls 42 whereby the rope may be readily actuated. In operation of the gate a person approaching the gate from th right hand side, pulls downwardly on the pull 42 which actuates the lock lever and pulls downwardly on the vertical portion of the rope 32, which swings the gate open as described above.
From the foregoing description itcan be seen that an improved gate is provided which is operatively connected to means whereby the gate can be readily operated from a vehicle without necessitating the occupant of the vehicle getting out of the same to open and close the gate.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiments, is the most eilicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of invention as set forth.
What I claim as new is:
In a gate operating mechanism, the com bination, of a gate hinged at one end thereof, a pair of supporting posts positioned onthe opposite sides of the gate, a pair of guide posts positioned at each side of the gate adjacent thereto, spaced pulleys carried by each of the supporting posts and arranged in alinement with each other, guide pulleys secured to the guide posts, and a flexible cable extending around the uppermost pulley and then downward around the lowermost pulleys and forming vertical runs and hand operating portions and then inwardly and around the pulleys carried by the guide posts and then havingthe terminals thereof connected to the opposite sides of the gate, as and for the purpose specified.
