ATOMIZING DEVICE FOR ROTARY OIL-BURNEBS.
Application filed August 27, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Sonniurncnn, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Atomizing Devices for Rotary Oil-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to atomizing devices for rotary oil or liquid fuel burners, and has for its object the production of a rotary spray plate or atomizing device that will effect the atomization of oil or other liquid fuel and the admixture of the resultant vapor with air for supporting combustion in a more efficacious manner and with better results than is possible in using spray plates as heretofore ordinarily constructed for this purpose.
The invention will first be hereinafter more particularly described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

Referring to said drawings, in which the same reference letters are used to denote corresponding parts in different views, the letter 1) denotes the spray plate, which is designed to be mounted on the vertical shaft of a rotary oil burner, and to be rapidly rotated by rotation of the shaft, through the medium of a suitable motor in a well known manner, so as to accomplish the desired result. The spray plate or atomizer is preferably constructed of sheet steel, swaged or pressed into concavo-convex form, and provided with a series of apertures or openings therethrough, which are formed by slitting the metal plate at intervals, preferably along circular lines, and pressing the metal upwardly on one side of the slit, as at (Z, and downwardly on the other side thereof, as at al so that the openings are oval in form and have their axes extending at an angle to the periphery of the plate and approximately in the plane thereof, or on approxi- Specification of Letters Patent.

inately horizontal lines. In other Words, the openings are so formed that a line passing through the center of an opening in the direction of its length will extend approximately in the plane of the disk instead of passing through the disk parallel with or substantially parallel. with its axis, as in the case of the openings in spray plates-as heretofore ordinarily constructed, and the concave surface of the depressed portion faces the concave surface of the raised portion, thus producing an opening of oval form, oblong at its mouth and facing in the direction of rotation of the disk, the raised and depressed concave-convex portions of the metal tapering as they recede from the mouth of the opening and' merging in the surface of the plate, whereby the air entering the burner from below the spray plate is in effect scooped up and raised by the depressed portions cZ of the metal surrounding the openings and further raised by the raised portions a? and thrown outwardly to gether with the oil thrown outwardly onto the raised portions (Z by the inclined blades (Z near the axis of the disk. The blades 03 may be fori'ned integrally with or sedured to an annular flange at the base of a hub-like portion or sleeve D which flange is riveted or otherwise secured to the spray plate, as shown; the sleeve being adapted to receive the vertical shaft to which the spray plate may be secured, by a set screw entering a threaded aperture in said sleeve. The sleeve is grooved as shown to adapt it to be secured upon the shaft by spline and groove connection, so as to cause it to rotate with the shaft while permitting adjustment thereof lengthwise of the shaft. The blades d are outwardly inclined, preferably tangentially to the axis of the disk and at an angle to the axes of the oval openings. These blades 03 serve to break up and whirl the oil or liquid fuel outwardly for commingling with the air passing up through the spray plate. The margin or periphery of the spray plate is slit radially and the adjacent metal is bent upwardly and downwardly on opposite sides of the slits so as to form upwardl inclined vane-like portions or blades 01 n operation, as the spray plate is rotated in the direction of the arrows (Fig. 1) the oil thrown outwardly by the combined action of the blades (Z and the raised portions of the spray plate together with commingled air, onto the inclined blades dfiis further broken up and atomized by said blades (l the combined action of the blades and peculiar formation of the openings through the spray plate producing a whirlwind eifect,by which a thorough atomization of the oil and the commingling of the vapor with air is effected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A rotatable spray plate or atomiz'ing device having openings therein of oval form having their axes extending approximately in the plane of the plate at an angle to its axis; the metal of the plate being pressed into concavo-convex form on opposite sides of said openings and having the concave surfaces thereof facing at the mouth of the opening.
2; An atomizing device for rotary oil burners consisting of a metal plate slitted at intervals around its axis and having the metal upraised on one side of the slit and depressed on the other side thereof so as to provide openings between said raised and depressed portions having their axes extending substantially in the plane of the plate; said raised and depressed portions having concave surfaces facing at the mouth of said openings.
3. An aton'iizing device consisting of a concavo-convex disk having a circular series of openings formed therein, said openings having their axes extending at an angle to the periphery of the disk and the material of which the disk is formed being upturned onone side and downwardly turned on the other side of the opening,- there being a series of vertical blades around the center of the disk, and, a series of horizontally disposed upwardl inclined blades at its circ'iinrfer'ence.

An. atoinizing device consisting of a disk-like metal plate having a series of upwardly extendinginclined blades near its center and openings in said plate having their axes extending at an angle to the periphery of the plate and the metal upturned on one side and depressed on the other side of said opening whereby air entering the burner from below is raised by the depressed por ions and further raised and thrown outwardly by the raised portions, and a series of horizontally disposed upwardly inclined blades surrounding said openings.
5. An atomizing device for rotary oil burners consisting of a dish-shaped metal plate having slits formed therein and the metal upturned on one side and depressed on the other side of the slit so as to provide openings of oval form having their axes extending" substantially in the plane of the plate, the edges of the raised and depressed portions of the metal at the entrance to said openings being concave.
6. An atomizing device for rotary oil burners consisting of a metal plate slitted at intervals around its axis and having the metal upraised on one side of the slit and depressed on the other side thereof so as to provide oblong openings between. said raised and depressed portions having their axes extending substantially in the plane of the plate; said raised and depressed portions having concave surfaces facing at the mouth of said openings and tapering; therefrom and merging in the surface of the plate.
