FIREBACK FOR FIREPLA'CES. Vfwvucmlou msu umso, 1ers,
Patented Dec. 30,1919.
IN VEN TOR. -Z. H. Wawzer W I TNESSES UNITED sTATEs PATENT ornion ZACHARIAI-I H. WAGGONER, OF ,ATHEN GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM T. BROXTON, OF ATHENS, GEORGIA.
FIREBACK FOR FIREPLACES.`
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 3o, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ZACHARIAH II. VVAG- GONER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Clarke and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firebacks for Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates te fire backs for open fire places.
The object of the invention is to provide a knockdown fire back and j amb lining for open re places which may be quickly and easily set up for'use and when collapsed." will occuupy a minimum space for storage or shipment.
Another object is to so construct such an apparatus that when assembled the parts will be rigidly connected and held securely against all possibility of accidental collapse.
Still another object is to provide improved means for controlling the draft by varying the size of the throat.
Another object is to provide a back of this character which has a rearwardly inclined upper portion to alord an air space between the back and the back wall of the lire place to prevent overheating and burning out of the re back.
W'ith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l represents a front elevation of the lire back and jamb comprising this invention, set up ready for use,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section, and
Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 1f-4 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated, the structure constituting this inventioncomprises two side members 1 and 2, in the form of plates of any suitable material, preferably of cast metal which have their lower edges cut out to form air spaces 3. These side members are provided on their outer faces adjacent their rear edges with vertically spaced hook members 4 designed to interlockingly engage with coperating catch members 6 carriedby a back plate 5 on the inner face thereof adjacent its side edges as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. This back plate 5 has grooves 5 adjacent its side edges into which the rear edges of the side members 1 and 2 are designed to be seated to form a tight connection between the parts as is shown clearly in Fig; 4.
The back plate 5 has its upper portion deflected rearwardly as shown at 7 so that when the plate is placed in position, ample space will be provided between it and the back wall of the fire place to permit the passage of air between said members and thus prevent overheating and burning out of the back plate, said plate having its lower edge cut out as shown at 8 to form an air passage similar to that shown in the side members.
This plate 5 is provided on its front face with a plurality of longitudinally spaced, vertically disposed ribs 9 which operate to hold the fuel away from the back and permit the passage of air to prevent the burning out ofthe back plate, and also to facilitate the draft in the fire place and insure. the proper burning of the fuel.
A top plate 10 is mounted to slide on the upper edges of the side members land 2, said edges being inclined downwardly and rearwardly as is shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The top 10 is provided on its front face at its opposite side edges with catch members 11 which are designed to engage studs 12 carried by the outer faces of the side members 1 and 2 adjacent their inclined upper edges. These studs 12 are spaced suitable distances apart according to the adjustment it is desired to make for varying the throat 14 of the fireplace.
The cover 10 is provided on its outer face with reinforcing ribs 13 which are here shown extending diagonally and intersecting each other at the center of the plate, so
that the thickest portion is at said center directly over the hottest part of the ireplace. These ribsl are shown tapering toward their outer ends.y
The front edges of the side members 1 and 2 are shown recessed at 15 and 16 to afford clearance for elements carried by the front of a lireplace. These side members are also provided on their outer faces adjacent their front edges and at their upper and lower ends with laterally projecting apertured lugs 17 which are designed to receive wires, not shown, which connect said members in operative position. rFliese side members are also provided at their upper ence with laterally extending studs er pins 18 to form auxiliary securing means for the j amb linings, wires being adapted to be wound around these studs to eii'ect such connection;
From the above description it will be obvious that the parts constituting this fire back ann amb liningi may be quickly set up by simply connecting the catch members 6 with the hook members after entering the rear edges et the side members in the grooves 5 of the back plate. rlhe top is then slidably engaged with the upper edges oit the side members, and connected in adjusted position by fastening the hooks 1 1 over the studs 1Q on the side members. lt is to be understood that the top 10 is grooved on its inner cr t'ront face at its opposite ends to receive the upper edges of the side members in a manner similar to the connection between the side members and the back plate 5.
lllhen it is desired to knock down this fire back and j amb lining for shipping, storing or other purposes, the top 1() is irst removed and then the side members disengaged from the back plate permitting them to be placed in superposed position and stored in any suitable place.
ln the use o1 this iire back, the air passingl through the cut out portions 3 and 8 of the side members and back plate will circulate behind these members and pass up over the top 10 operating to cool the plate and prevent burning out, the ribs 9 also operating for the same purpose.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the advantages of the censtruction and of i the method et operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle o operation of the invention together with the device which l now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, l desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope ot the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device et the class described, back and side plates detachably connected, the side plates extending1 above the back plates and having their upper ends inclined down` wardly and reaii'wardly, a top plate slidable cn said inclined ends and provided with i catch members on its front tace near its side edges, and laterally extending spaced projections carried by said side members for detachable engagement by said catch ineinbers to provide for the adjustment of said top plate.
Ina devic-0 oif the class described, back and'side plates detachably connected and having cutout portions at their lower ends, ene oiC said plates being grooved to form seats for the. other, the side plates extending above the back plate and having theirupper ends inclined downwardly and rearwardly, a top plate slidable on said inclined ends and provided with catch members on its front face near its side edges, and laterally eX- tending spaced projections carried by said side members ifer detachable engagement by said catch members to provide for the adjustment ot said top plate.
3. ln a. knock-down lire back, a jainb lining for open iireplaces, two sideplates having hooks on their outer faces at their rear edges, a baclr plate having catches on its inner tace at .its side edges positioned to interlockingly engage said hooks, groovesfin said back plate to receive the rear edges oi said side members, the lower edges of said side and back plates being cut out to forni air passages, said side members having downwardly and rearwardly inclined upper edges with spaced studs arranged on their outer faces, a top plate mounted to slide on said edges, and having catches to adj ustably gage said studs to hold the top plate in adjusted position, and apertnred attaching lugs carried by the upper and lower ends ot' said side plates on their outer faces near their front portions to receive securing elements.
In testimony whereof l ailiX my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
his ZACHARIAH H. WAGGONER.
