To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GERTRUDE A. JOHN- sox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Cheyenne and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring-Seats for Baby-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inventions known as carriages and wagons, and more particularly has reference to a spring seat for baby carriages.

This invention has for its principal aim and object to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed so that it may be readily folded and placed within the usual foot compartment of a baby carriage so as to lie completelywithin the same and thus permit of a readycollapse and compact folding of the carriage itself.

More particularly this invention enibraces the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the spring members supporting the seat are of novel form and are designed to be collapsed under pressure so as to permit of a compact folding of the deviceso that it may occupy only a minimum amount of space within the foot compartment and thereby not in terfere with the folding of the sides and ends of the carriage in juxtaposed relation.

Among the other aims and objects of this inventionmay be recited the Provision of a device of the character described with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple and the cost of production low and the efiiciency high.

Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts sirably overlies the compartment 2.

The invention is clearly illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which through the foot compartment with the device arranged therein and the carriage in a folded position.

Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of one of the spring members detached.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a portion of a baby carriage of a conventional form consisting generally of a bottom 1 which is formed with the usual foot com partment 2, a back 3 is'hinged as at 4; to one end of the bottom and when not in use is designed to be foldable on the bottom, while a front piece 5 is hinged as at 6 to the front end of the body and like the back piece is foldable upon the bottom and Ode posed sides 7 are hinged as at 8 to the o5- posite sides of the bottom and are foldable at times to lie upon the top. Suitable catch means 9 may be employed for connecting,

the sides to the front and back when the device is extended. It is to be understood that the particular construction of the foregoing parts form no particular part of this invention, being merely illustrated and described for the purpose of presenting a clear understanding of the invention.

The improved resilient and foldable seat, indicated generally by the numeral 10 is now employed and is positioned on the bottom 1 and in the present instance consists of a flexible body 11 to the under surface of which is connected a plurality of suitably spaced and transversely disposed spring members 12. In the present instance each of these spring members is formed from a single piece of sheet metal which comprises a main portion 13 bent upon itself as at 14 to provide an upper resilient portion 15, the outer end of which is offset as at 16 to provide a tongue 17 at the terminal which is designed to be removably arranged beneath the inwardly extending fiange or lip 18 which is formed on the opposite end of the main portion as indicated and acts as a guard. In this connection it is to be noted that the tongue is normally sure, while the tongue 17 will slide on the.

main portion 13 and contact with the flange at the bend 19 thereof.

WVhen not in use, the flexible body 11 may be folded upon itself and disposed within the foot compartment 2 and owing to the peculiar construction of the resilient members 12 the seat 10 may be pressed to occupy only a minimum amount of space in the foot compartment 2 and lie completely therein. This compartment may also accommodate a pillow 20 and subsequent tothe arranging of the seat 10 and the pillow 20 in the foot compartment as indicated in Fig. 2, the front face 5 and the sides 7 are folded to lie over the compartment 2 and bottom 1, as indicated. .It will thus be seen that owing to the peculiar construction of the seat the same together with the pillow may be arranged withinthe compartment 2 without interfering with the collapsing or folding of the carriage.

It is thought in view of the foregoing de, scription that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all.

What is claimed is l. A seat of the character described consisting of a flexible body, a plurality of spring members secured at suitable intervals transversely of the bottom of the body, each of the spring members being formed from a single piece of metal which is folded upon itself to form a resilient arm, and cooperative means on the ends of the strip of metal for normally holding the resilient arm in close relation with the main portion of the strip.

A seat of the character described com-- prising a flexible body, a plurality of spring members secured at sultable spaced intervals and transversely of the end surface of the body, each of the spring members being formed from a single piece of metal and comprising a main portion bent upon itself to provide a resilient arm an offset tongue at the terminal of the arm and a flanged guard at the opposite terminal of the main portion for slidably accommodating and maintaining the tongue in close relation with the main portion.
