To all 'whom t may coflme'ffn:
Be it known that l, Sion @Til/lorries., oitizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing si; Foleyet, in the Province' of Ontario and Dominion of Canada," have invented new and useful improvements in liloory footb- Brusbels, orf which the following is o speci Axiezuion.
My present invention pertains to rotary tooth brushes of the type in which the brush is rois-ated firstsin one direction and then in the other by zilornote pressure and reluXution/o'l' ihe hon-'lof tlie'usor.
One of ille objects of `the invonion is the provision of u brush of the kind referred to embodying o construction that is suscepicible of economic production, and is at the same timo reliable in. oporution und odoped 'to be nonuted with tho exercise of but little eilorlv, l`
Another object of ille invonion is the provision of u brush comprising :L head` bristles, und nire so constructed und'rolutively orronged sluit the bristles, ore joined ipo v"die head in o nmnner rulculatod to preclude Casual displacement oi' any bristle incidental lo the use of lille brush.
vWilli the foregoing' in mind the invention will be fully undersood from the following description und rlziinis when saine ure rend in connection with lille drawings. oocompainying and 'forming part ol this speriioution, in which Figure l is :i longii'ndinnlly Vertical seo 'tion of a rotary tooth brush constructed in accordzinre Wit-l1 my invention.
Fig. 2 is :in onlurgsd longitudinal vview or' the brush comprised in my improvement.
Fig. 2 on enlarged cross section of sai-:l brush,
Fig. 3 is o side elevation of the housing of the brush and clio tubular shank thereon,
Fig'. l is i plan of the blank of which said. housing is orrnofl, i
5 is on rai-ion, partly in section, showing tiie union lirougli 'which the shank of lie brush liousii'ig is connected. with the tubular lniridle of the device..
Fig. is a detail View ls iowing; the lmnd spring' of tbe devicen Fig. 7 is on end View of said hand spring 8 .comprises disconnected flows of tho parts that enter into the gearing housing of' the device.

The brush propo-.r of my noim'. moe oooprises o profsrsbly tubular lli-ssd l. br
said brush boing produced o5 laying Wire and bristles on the hood, with biglits of the bristles betwesn rire wires zrter which the Wires aire wised und .riveted or soldered together ul. both ends of ih@ bead. Monieslly :21 brush allarmi-ended as stoed is strong and durable in Elie respect inhetthere is no liability o any of bristles being; displaced incidenosl io ille use of the brush.
The forward end. of Elie brnsli hood l is suitably journalod in 'lbs forward end. Wall. of a brush housing' Il, formed of the blank shown in lli1 ig. il. The rear end of fiie said housing l lios fixed thereto n lulmlsr slmnk 5, exeriorly threaded si; its rear/nfl us indicated by 6.. This shank receives the forward topo l 7L .in 'Y of J:zlie 'tubular body itl oi tlro devio and bj; reforonoe to Fig, l it will be nood simi shank deiziolmbly connected to 'i'.,lie body llxrougrli the medium of :i which is o-Xl'eriorly threaded us shown in ll'ig. and is provided rwitli un interior hrood to engage, the thread 6 of the shank and also provided Willi un inerior frange l0 adopted *so bear against :in abutment 10a on the l g By virtue of this construction the housing; Ll and iis shank 5 may be readily disooiinooi/ed from the body 8 as when desired lo disconnoc'; the lieud lol the. brush from tile sliolit lil lioreiir after described. li will also be noted that when the housing" l disco ueeed from the body 8, the brnsli may be removed from the housing to give place ro o new brush. ln the present and preferred ombodiment of my invention Alzlieislioz's ll ionrnoied in suitable bearings in the longitudinal conter of ll'ie body 8,1nd is orovid 'i 'with duc-ed forward ond, oi zu. n in section, which .is sock of the brush bend l. understood iriflliis p the union 9 arranged. es
end
the rear end of ther shaft 11, and the gears lfl'and 15 being fixed. with respect to each other, Withthe gear 14. intermeshed withl the gear 13. In the upper end ofthe gear` ing housing is an aperture 16, and workin i throughy said aperture is a resilient rac bar 17" which is intermeshed with and is adapted to transmit motion to the gear 15.
At 20 is a hand spring, Figs 6 and 7,
i which is preferably oi' concavo convex form in cross section, 1s provided with a forward loop 21 and has said loop fixed to a saddle 22, of concavo convex form in cross v directly cooperates.'
section which saddle is lsuperimposed upon .and is ,riveted to the body 8. vThe connec tion of the resilient rack bar 17, to the hand spring 20 is a .pivotal one, as shown, and this combined with the auxiliary of the rack bar assures free and easy movement of the back bar and the gear` with which it In the practical use of my novel brush, the brush after being supplied with water and tooth powder or with tooth paste is manipulated in the manner common to ordinary tooth brushes-e'. e., the brush proper ismoved forwardly and backwardly along the teeth and at the same time the hand spring 20 is compressed and released. This compression and relaxation of the spring imparts a multiplicity of rotations to the brush proper with the result that the bristles of said element cleans the interdental spaces and in that way prevents discoloration and decay. During theuse of the brush, the swivel connection before reof in y invention such changes or modiiications may be made in matters of construction as fairly fall within the scope of my appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:-
1. The combination in a device of the -kind described, of a tubular body, `a rotary brush, a housing partially inolosing said brush, a shaft disposed in thetuhular `body and connected to the brush, means for rotating said shaft, an abutment on the tubular body', and a ring connected with the housing and having a flange opposed to the rear side of the said abutment.
2. In a rotary tooth brush, the combination of a tubular body having a forward tapered portion and an exterior abutment, a housing having a tapered shank receiving the forward portion of the body and also having its rear portion threaded, aring mounted on the body and opposed to the abutment thereon and threaded to engage the housing' shank, a brush mounted in the housing,a shaft mounted in the body, and engaging the brush, a gearing housing fixed to the rear end' of the body and receiving the rear portion of the shaft, gearing disposed in said housing, and means for actuating said gearing.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
SIDNEY KANEYE.
