To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HALVOR GLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belview, in the county of Eedwood and State of dinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plane Attachments for Handsaws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide a plane attachment for hand-saws; and, to this end, it consists 'of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters in dicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings Figure l is a fragmentary right side elevation of a hand-saw having the plane attachment secured to the handle thereof; and

Fig. 2 is a detail view in section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

The numeral 3 indicates the blade of a hand-saw and the numeral 4 indicates the handle thereof. In the upper edge portion of the handle 4, is a shoulder 5 which is oblique to the back of the saw, and forward of this shoulder 5, said handleis provided with an L-shaped notch to afford bearing surfaces 6 and 7, the former of which extends substantially parallel to the back of the saw and the latter of which, like the shoulder 5, extends oblique to said back. At the intersection of the bearing surfaces 6 and 7, the handle at is further provided with aforwardly projecting slot 8. It will be noted that the bearing surface 6 extends channel is such as to closely engage the shoulder 5, bearing surfaces 6 and 7 and outer edge portion of the handle 4, forward of the bearing surface 7. gral with the body of the plane and the flanges of its channel 10, extends into the slot 8 and forms a continuation of the forward end portion ofthe bearing surface 6. To detachably secure the plane 9 to the handle 4, a bolt 12 is extended through a bore in the outerfiange of the channel '10 and an alined bore in said handle, and has screw-threaded engagement with the inner flange of said channel.

The iron 13 of the plane 9 is adjusted by a pinion 14 journaled in bearings 15 onthe bottom of said plane and'meshes with rack teeth 16 in the back of said iron. The shaft of the pinion 1% extends through the outer side of the plane 9 and is provided with a head or thumb-piece 1-7 in which is formed a notch, thus permitting said pinion to be turped by hand, a screw-driver or other too From the above description, it is evident that, by the interlocking engagement of the plane with the saw handle and the bolt 12, said plane is securely and firmly attached to the saw handle, so that the plane may beoperated by said handle. The attachment is especially adapted for smoothing the end of a board, after the same has been cut by the saw and avoids the necessity of carrying an independent plane. As is well known, carpenters working on scaffolding or in other inconvenient places, find it diflicult to use independent tools as they are liable to drop the ones not in use, being unable'to find a safe place to lay the same.

What I claim is p 1. The combination with a hand-saw, of a plane detachably secured at one of its sides tothe upper edge portion of the handle of the saw, and means at the other side of the'pla'ne for adjusting the iron thereof.

2. The combination with a hand-saw, of a plane having in one of its sides a channel into which the upper edge portion of the handle of the saw extends, and a bolt extending through the flanges of'said channel and the handle of the saw to detachably secure the plane thereto.

4. The combination with a hand-saw, of a 5 plane having in one of its sides a channel into which the upper edge portion of the handle of the saw extends, said channel having an offset portion arranged to engage a shoulder on said handle, a Web extending 10 into said channel and arranged to enter a correspondingly formed slot in the handle of the saw, and means detachably securing the plane to said handle.
