Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Dec. 9, 1915 Application filed March 6, 1919. Serial No." 281,043.

of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Animal-Head, of which the following is a full clear and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved animal head for fur scarfs and similar fur articles and arranged to enhance the ornamental appearance of the fur article and at the same time to provide means for temporarily engaging the head with a portion of the outer garment of the wearer. Another object is to permit of manufacturing the animal head in an exceedingly simple and economical manner at the same time insuring the formation of a clamping head not liable to get easily out of order.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodimentof the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of the animal head as applied to a fur scarf;

The fur scarf 10 shown in Fig. 1 is pro vided with an animals head 11 of fur skin having an upper member 12 including a snout 13, and a lower member 14. The scarf 10 is provided in its forward portion with a lining 15 preferably made .of paper or sinnlar material, and having

16 and 17 attached to the members 12 and 14- of the head 11. Within the head 11 is arranged a clamp 20 having upper and

lower clamping jaws

21 and 22 of a width corresponding approximately to that of the members 12 and 14 of the head 11 and over which the said portions are fashioned to hold the saidmembers 12' and 14 in proper position. The 21 and 22 are provided at their rear ends with

23 and 24 engaging a pivot 25 to permit of swinging the jaws into open or closed position, the jaws being normally held in the closed position by a spring 26 coiled on the pivot 25 and having its ends bearing against handles 27 and 28for1ningrearward extensions of the

jaws

21 and 22.

'Byreference to Fig. 1 it will be noticed that the bottom handle 28 of the lower jaw 22 overlies the bottom of the lining 25, and the rear end of the handle 27 abuts against the top rear portion of the said lining. When it is desired to open the

jaws

21 and 22 the user on pressing the top and bottom of the scarf 10 opposite the

handles

27 and 28 causes the jaws to swing open against the tension of the spring 26. lVhen the pressure is released the jaws 21 and 22' swing into closed position by the action of the spring 26. The clamp 20 is preferably made of sheet metal and in order to give a proper appearance to the mouth of the animal use is made of a lining 30 fitting onto the opposite faces of the

jaws

21 and 22. This lining 30 is made in the form of a strip of rubber (see Fig. 6) doubled up to provide upper and

lower members

31 and 32 glued or otherwise secured to the opposite faces of the

jaws

21 and 22. it will be noticed that the bend 33 of the doubled-up strip is adjacent the fulcrum of the

jaws

21, 22 and-hence the lining does not interfere with the proper opening andv closing of the jaws as above described. The lining 30 is fashioned to represent upper and

lower gums

By reference to Figs. 1, 3 and 5;

38 and 39 are of considerable length and insure a firm hold or biting in a lapel or other part of an outer garment worn by the user of-the scarf to securely hold the head in positionon the garment for the time being. 31, 32 as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, thus holding the sharp side edges of the metallic jaws out of engagement with the fur skin of the head 11. T he fur end of the upper lining member 31 is provided with an upturned extension ll fitting onto the snout 13.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the jaws are not liable to injure the garment or the fur to which the jaws are attached for the time being, at the same time an exceedingly firm grip is had of the jaws on the material with which the are engaged.

It will further be noticed that by the use of the lining;- 30 the metallic jaws are not visible and by making the lining of red rubher with the teeth appearing in white a very close imitation of the animals mouth is pro duced and hence the ornamental appearance of the fur scarf or other fur article on which the animals head is used is rendered natural and highly ornamental.

Having thus described our invention, we claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. in animal head, comprising a head of a fur skin, a clamp havingpivoted clamping jaws over which the front portion of the said head is fashioned, the clamp having handles extending rearwardly from the jaws into the rear portion of the head, and an interior lining of resilient material attached to the jaws and imitating the mouth of the animal.

2. An animal head, comprising a head of a fur skin, a clamp having pivoted clamping j a ws over which the front portion ofthe head is fashioned, the clamp having spring-pressed handles extending rearwardly from the jaws into th rear portion of the head, and a 1ining' formed of a pice of rubber doubled up and attached to the said jaws, the lining animal.

An animal head, comprising a head of a fur skin, spring-pressed upper and lower jaws over which the front of the said head is fashioned, and an interior lining of resilient inateral attached to the jaws and repre senting the gums, teeth and tongue of the a. An animal head, comprising a head of a fur skin, spring-pressedpivoted clamping jaws over which the front portion of the said head is fashioned, and a lining formed of a piece of rubber doubled up and attached to the jaws, the bend of the piece of rubber being adjacent the fulcrum of the jaws and the upper portion representing the upper gum and upper teeth, and the lower portion representing the lower gum, lower teeth and tongue of the animals head.

5. An animal head, comprising a head of a fur skin, spring-pressed pivoted clamping jaws over which the front portion of the said head is fashioned, and alining;- formed of a piece of rubber doubled up and attached to the jaws, the bend of the piece of rubber being adjacent the fulcrum of the jaws and the upper portion representing the upper gum, and upper teeth, and the lower portion representing the lower guni, lower teeth and tongue of the animals head, the upper and lower teeth being arranged in interlocking relation when the jaws are closed.

6.-An animal head, comprising a head of a fur skin, spring-pressed upper and lower jaws over which the front. of the said head is fashioned, and a lining attached to the jaws and representing the gums, teeth and tongue of the animal, the front end of the lining at the upper jaw having an upward extension extending above the front end of the jaw and fitting against the inner side of the snout of the said head of fur.
