HAND-PUNCH.'
Application filed May 19, 1919. Serial No. 298,949.
lowing to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.v
rlie present invention relates to hand punches, and has Jjor an object to provide an improved construction of socket coupling or holder for punch points admitting of the use of a series of punch points varying in size or character with a single punch frame and its operating mechanism. y
Another object is to provide an improved coupling in a hand punch which may be used in the punch frameset ordinary construction andl size without altering the same Y and which may accommodate punch points of various sizes and operate the same by the ordinary manipulation of the punch.
lfd/lith these and further objectsin view as will in part hereinafter become apparent and in part he stated, the invention compri` es certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements ci parts as subsequently specific( `ind claimed.
ln the accompanying drawing,- Y
Figure 1 is a side elevation vot a presentused hand punohhaving the imprevee point holder of this invention'applied'thereto Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the head oi the punch substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, side elevation,
partly in section, ci the head of the handpunch showing the operating lever thrown over for withdrawing the punch point and its socket ready for detaching the point.
Fig. i a detail, enlarged view showing the parts of the socket and the punch, the same being separated.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, 10 designates the frame of a punch provided in the usual manner with upper and lower jaws 11 and 12, the latter carrying the removable die 13 in the usual manner, and the upper jaw 11 having a bore 14 therein in axial alinement with the die 13. The upper portion of the jaw 11 is counter-bored to provide a chamberor way 15 and has an upwardly Haring recess or groove 16 at the Specication of Letters Patent.

inner side of the chamber l5 to `facilitate removal of the punch vpointfrom the upper jaw when the handle is thrown over, as shown in Fig. 3. Y Y
The frame 10 carries. at opposite sides of theupper jaw 11 a pair oflinks 17 pivoted at their lower ends upon trunnions erprojections 18 of the frame, in the usual inanner, and carrying between their upper ends the ordinary handle 19, the handle 19 having an offset 2O la-t'its'inner end which i is forked and receives therebetween the Vhead 2 1 of the punch point socket This socket comprises a threaded reduced stud 22 formed on the under side vof the head 21 and adapted to receive in threaded engagement thereover a couplingpiece 28 provided interiorly with a relatively deep chamber 24;
and a co-aXial opening 25 which passes through the lower end'oi the coupling member 23. A punch point is shownV at 26, and has a head 27 adapted to t inthe `chamber 24 of the coupling member and to be clamped therein by the ,lower end of the stud 22 when the coupling member 23 is turned up over the stud'. The shank Aof the punch point k2 6 passes through the vbore Vor opening 25 and projects below the socket for passage through the opening llin'the upper jaw 11. llfhelowei end of the punchpoint 26 may be of any Vsuitable size and form within the limits ofthe diameter of the shank or stem of the punch point land is adapted Vto o-operate with'the die 13,.the
latter being 4removable tolpermit Vthe mount'- The head 21 of the socket has a lip 28 adapted to be engaged by a pivoted locking member 29 when the handle 19 is raised in the ordinary operation of 'the punch. The locking member 29 may be turned into the position shown in Fig. to release the head 21 and admit of the throwing over of the handle 19 to withdraw the socket and the punch point from the upper aw 11, and to position the same for easy access for the removal or interchange of the punch point 26.
It is apparent that a set or series of punch points 26 may be used with a single punch and the points may be interchanged -to accominodate the punch to various Vclasses of work to which the hand punch is-adapted.
The invention thus provides a means whereby a simple hand punch inay be employed for `forming punch holes of diii'erent sizes and shapes, and the separable socket is ot the abran-described peculiar constructionl with its exterior cylindrical surta/:e o' uniform diameter and length corresponding to the ordinary punch socket now employed, so that the new separable socket may be used in the ordinary punch traine without any alterations or additions thereto.
"di hen it is desired to interchange a punchpoint 26, it is only necessary to throw the handle 19 over for withdrawing the punch point and its socket, as shown in Fig. 3. The coupling piece Q3 is now grasped by the lingers, pliers, a wrench, or the like at its Igripping tac/es for unscrei'ving the coupling piece tron: the stud By inverting the coupling piece Q3 the punch point 26 may now drop out of the coupling piece and a dililerent punch point may be inserted. ythe coupling piece is new screwed up upon the stud and the new punch point is held tirnil, in position. is shown in Figs. l, 2 and et, particularly, the lower portion of the head 2l and the coupling piece 23 are of the saine external diameter to admit tree passage of the socket into the opening l5 in the top of the upper jaw l1,
I claim l. ln a punch, the combination with a frame having upper and lower jaws with a passage in the upper jaw for receiving` a punch peint and its socket, and a handle operatively mounted upon the trame, ot a socket having a head mounted on the handle and provided with a threaded stud, and a coupling piece threaded upon the stud adapted to bind against the head and having a chamber therein to receive the head of a punch point and an opening in its end through which the stem of the punch point 1s adapted to pass.
in a punch, the combination with a frame, a handle on the traine, and a die mounted on Lhe frame, the upper portion of the frame having the usual chamber in axial alinement with the die, a separable socket carried by the handle and having a chamber therein and an opening leading from the :haiuber through the end of the socket, said socket being adapted to removably support a punch point with the head of the point in the chamber and the stem or" the point removably fitting in the opening to project beyend the socket and enter said chamber in the upper part of the punch trame.
C3. ln a `punch, the combination with a traine having upper and lower jaws and a chamber in the upper jaw opening therethrough toward the lower jaw, a handle pivoted on the frame, and a punch point adapted to enter the opening in the upper jaw, means *life uetachably connecting the punch peint to the handle, said means coinprising a socket head adapted to be pivot ally mounted upon the handle and having a reduced portion to enter the opening in the upper jaw and a further reduced threaded stem, a coupling piece having an interior chamber and threaded at one end to engage the stud and having a reduced opening at its other end for receiving the stein ci' the punch point, said coupling` piece being adapt-- cd to be turned up upon the stud Jor binding the head of the punch point in the 'bot toni ot the chamber, the first reduced portion of the head and the coupling piece heilig of like external diameter tor tree passage into and out of 'the opening in the upper aw.
in 'testimony whereof atl'ix my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
