COMPOUND TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1920.
Application filed January 9, 1917. 2 Serial No. 141,384.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIE H. CRUM- MEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baxley, in the county of Appling and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in compound tools and the principal object of the invention is to provide a combination watch makers tool adapted for various uses and so constructed as to take the place of several of the ordinary tools now in use so that the user will have a number of tools at his command without having to lay down one and pick up another tool thus causing considerable loss of time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which is adapted to be used as a truing caliper and also to provide a device for use as a glass cutter for cutting circles and similar figures.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a punch for removing the jewels of the balance wheel which is arranged to avoid danger of breaking the jewel.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following, specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of a watch makers tool constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a view from the opposite side of Fig. 1 showing portions of the device in section to more clearly illustrate the details of construction.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a detail View showing pointer and mounting for the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates one of the handles of the device while the numeral 2 designates the cooperating handle. Each of these handles is formed at one end with a head 3 having a central aperture therethrough for the reception of the pivot bolt 4 by means of which the device is held in assembled position and formed on the handle 1 is a jaw member 5, while the aw member 6 is formed on the handle 2 thus forming a device which when the handles are closed will move the jaw members to closed position. Threaded in the aw members are suitable thumb screws 7, the heads 8 of which are knurled to form a gripping surface by which the same may be turned while the inner adjacent ends of said plate and engage the balance wheel being trued, the free end of the pointer being curved downwardly as at 10 for engaging the balance wheel. The downturned end 10 is pivoted as at 10 to the pointer so that the same can swing toward the rim of the bal-- ance wheel when gaging wheels of different diameters. Formed on each of the jaw members are suitable extensions 13 and 14 respectively and the jaw member 13 .is apertured to receive a suitable pin 15 while a similar aperture 16 is formed near the outer end of the jaw member 13 and is arranged to aline with a punch 17 which is fitted into an opening 18 formed in the jaw member 14 which punch is removably secured in place by means of a suitable latch member 19. This punch is used for removingthe jewels from a watch and it will be seen that when the device is manipulated the punch will aline with the opening 16. Removably secured in an aperture 20 formed in the extreme end of the extension 14 is a pin 21 having formed intermediate its ends a head 22, which is arranged to engage the inner surface of the extension 14 to limit the inward movement of the pin. The inner end of the pin has formed integrally therewith a barrel punch 23 which cooperates with the transversely curved surface 24 formed on the inner face of the extreme forward end of the extension 13. The curved surface 24 of the jaw is arranged transversely of the extension 18 and is arranged so as to form a suitable rest or anvil for the watch barrel, when the punch 23 is being used to make a catch in the barrel for the spring. The surface 24: is curved so as to fit any size barrel.
Formed in the end of the handle mem her 1 opposite that hai ing the jaw member 5 formed thereon is a suitable bore 25 for the reception of a suitable centering pin which is arranged to act as a center when the device is used as a compass. A bore 26 is formed in the coiipeating handle memher 2 opposite the end on which the head 6 is formed and is adapted to receive the shank of a glass cutter so as to hold the same in operative relation with the point hereinbefore referred to. Formed in the handle member 2 adjacent the end having the opening 26 formed therein :is a plurality of notches 27 which are gradiuited in size as shown to receive glass of dilferent thicknesses to grip the same when being broken after having been cut. in order to limit the closing of the jaws and handle members a suitable set screw passes through the handle member 1 and the inner end of said set screw engages the inner side of the handle member 2 as will. be clearly seen upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Pivotally connected as at 29 to the handle member 1 is a gage plate 30 which is slotted as at 31 to receive the shank of a set screw 32 which is adapted to be threaded into the handle member 2 and this gage plate is" provided with a plurality of graduations 33 for cooperation with a V-shaped mark 3i formed on the handle member 2 so as to in dicate the distance between the center and the glass cutter when the device is used to cut glass. In order to provide a wire cutter each of the heads 3 is provided with a suitable notch 35 through which the wire is passed and it will be seen that upon closing the handles the same will be cut.
Vhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
\Vhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a pair of pivotally connected handles, heads formed on the forward ends of the handles, jaw members formed integrally with the heads, adjustable supports carried by the jaws and arranged in direct alinement with each other, bearings formed on the adjacent ends of the supports and ar ranged to rotatably receive the terminals of the balance staff of a watch, a slotted plate mounted. on one of the jaws, a set screw carried by the jaw and extending through the slot of the said slotted plate and arranged to engage the outer surface of the plate to hold the same in adj i'lsted position, a pointer pivotally secured to the lower end of the plate and arranged to swing at right anglesthereto, the outer end of the pointer being turned downwardly for engaging the balance wheel, said downturned end being pivotally connected to and arranged to swing at right angles to the plate, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses WILLIE H..CRUM1\1EY.
