COLLAPSIBLE BED.

To all whom it may concern Be it kn wn that I. PIOTR *noxowsnr, a citizen of Poland, residing at McKees Rocks, county of Allegheny, and State of Fei'insylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object the provision of a bed which may be folded or collapsed so as to present a structure adapted for the use of one or more persons in an easy and convenient manner.

A further object is to provide a bed which has no objectionable appearance when extended or retracted, all of the several parts being of durable construction and pleasing design,

These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawlngs, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view showing a bed made in accordance with the invention, taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and,

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, the section being taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the numerals l0 and 10 designates one of the corner legs of the bedstead the same being in two equal sections, and similar corner posts, formed of sections 11 and 11, are formed in the opposite corner. These posts are connected by longitudinal frame elements 12, having inturned flanged footings 13.

Similarly connected between the corner posts 10 and 11, and 10' and 11 at the head, are light beams 14:, and 14:, rails 15 and 15 engaging between the same elements above the beams.

Connecting between the elements 14 and 15 are ornamental braces 16, forming the end of the bedstead, the same being separated when the bed is in an extended position and disposed one over the other when the bed is in a folded position.

Rigidly engaged with one section of the leg elements 11 through openings formed in the other sections thereof are laterally extending bars 18, having curved cam edges 19 at their front ends, the lower portions of which rest upon Specification of Letters Patent.

brackets 20, carried by the legs 10, and exbetween the bars 18, near the outer end, are rails 21 so as to prevent the distortion of the bars under pull of the mattress 22, secured at its ends to them. Other bars 23, having curved cam outer ends 24, carry a mattress 25, these bars being held in rigid spaced relation by rails 26, the opposite ends of the bars having secured to them brackets 27, slidably mounted upon vertical rods 28, the angularly turned ends of which are rigidly engaged in the longitudinal elements 12 constituting the bedframe.

Attached below the'bar 18 is a rack 29, the same being engaged at its ends between the elements 10' and 11, a similar rack bar being disposed upon the opposite side of the bed-engaging with which are pinions 30, mounted adjacent to the ends of a longitudinally disposed shaft 3 1, housed inthe legs 11, the shaft 31 having an extending squared end 32, receptive of a wrench head 33, having a stem 34c, connected with an actuating handle 35.

In operation, when it is desired to extend the bed for a single person, the wrench is applied to the squared end of the shaft 31 so as to rotate the same, actuating the pinions and moving the racks 29 in such direction as to bring the opposed faces of the corner posts 10 and 10 and 11 and 11 together, the faces 19 and 24 of the bars 18 and 25 coming in contact raises the bar 23, together with the mattress, so that the same is disposed over the mattress 22, at which time the braces 16 are disposed one in front'of the other and a single bed provided in an obvious manner.

If the shaft 31 be rotated in the opposite direction, the laterally extending bars 13 and 23 will be separated, the bars 23 lowering by gravity so that the mattresses 22 and 25 are positioned in the same plane, providing a bed suitable for two or more persons.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a serviceable bed has been disclosed adapted to provide a suitable resting place for either one or more persons and that the same may be metamorphosed from one to, the other in an easy and simple manner. 1

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a folding bed, the combination with a frame comprised, of four posts divided,

frame element, mattresses secured between I opposite pairs of said cars, a rack secured to the end section of said frame, and means for actuating said rack whereby said bars may be mo ed to or from each other, said bars being disposed one over the other when the bed is in a collapsed position and in the same plane when it is in an extended position.

2. in a collapsible bed, the combination with sectional corner posts, side beams rigidly engaged with the outermost sections of said posts, end beams engaged with one seetiou' of said posts passing through openings formed in th other sections of said posts, a pair of bars fixedly engaged with said side beams extending laterally toward the opposite side, a second pair of bars disposed in opposite relation and siidable vertically upon said side beams, said bars having angularly formed cam faces adapted to make contact, stretcher-s extending between said said stretehers, racks secured in said fiXed bars, a shaft passing longitudinally below said racks, means for rotating said shaft, and pinions secured to said shaft, engageable with said racks, whereby upon the rotation of said shaft the side elements of said shaft is caused to move to or from each other.
