This invention has relation to adjustable school desks, and has for an object to pro- Y vide a desk, with means'whereby a vertical adjustment of the desk is permitted, to

adapt the same to the size of the pupil.

Another object of the 'invention'is to provide a desk articularl for schoolV ur oses, i 7

embodying a desk top mounted forjvertical adjustment with meansreadily operable for adjusting the height of thetop, and a novel means for retaining the top in its adjusted position.

In additionto the foregoing, this invention comprehends improvements in the details of. construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and par` ticularly pointed out in the appended claim. With reference to the drawings, and pari ticularly to the construction of the desk, 10 indicates the end frame members of the desk, each of which comprisesV vertical,`

transversely spaced castings 11 Vand 12 at the front and rear sides respectively. The castings 11 are of openwork construction, eX- tending approximately the full width of the desk, and provided with vertical slots 13 and 14 at the front and rear. edges of the castings'respectively. The rear castings 12 are in the nature of vertical strips which are formed with outwardly extending apertured ears 15 upon their inner edges for coaction with similar ears 16 formed Von the rear edges of the castings 11, bolts 17 lbeing Vpro`Y vided to penetrate the ears whereby to hold the 'castings' together. 1t will be noted that the castings: 11 and 12 are each formed with legs `18 and 19 respectively, which diverge i when the castingsare connected, and which are formed with feet`2O whereby theframe members may be rigidly secured to the hoor.

A desk top designated as an entirety atv 21 is provided, and includes a top board 22 and a bottom board 23, connected byside boards 2A inV a manner to dispose the top and bottom in spaced relation, and'to dispose to top board at an inclination. A back board 25. is provided to close the back of the. desk top, and it will be notedthat said back board extends vertically a'bovevand below the desk top 'and'beyon'd the sides thereof. A pair of cleats 26 are furthermore secured to the side boards at the front and rear ends as indicated. The cleats 26 are designed to Yenter the slots 13 and 14 of the frame, and the vertical edges of the back board are designed to enter the space between the .castings 11 and 12 of the Vend frame members,

whereby the desk top is guided for vertical movement. Y

and at a point about midway of the height thereof. A gear wheel 28 is xedly mount ed upon the shaft ata point intermediate Y its ends4 for engagement with a rack bar 29 securedrto the inner face of the back board beneath the .desk top. A crank handle 30 is secured to one end of the shaft whereby the shaft may be rotated, and a ratchetwheel Thus Vit will be seen, the desk topmay be raised or lowered to adjust .its height to tained in adjusted position temporarily by means of the `pawl and ratchet. .However,. to secure the desk in its adjusted position j and to provide a more positive support to resist downward strainupon the desk top, the bolts 17 are tightened so as'rto cause the castings-l1 and 12 to tightly engage and bind the edges of the back board thereb'e-v i tween.

Y the size of the user,fand the deskV will be re- The seat should be so constructed that the pins 39 will be in recesses when the seat is adjusted squarely in front of the desk, so that when the user rises and the seat is relieved of his Weight, the top and intermediate boards may be rotated relative tc the bottom board, thereby permitting the seat to be turned when the pupil or user is leaving or approaching the desk. The pins may be seated in the recesses again by rotating` the seat a quarter of a revolution.

Thus it will be seen'that We have provided a novel combination of elements in the construction of this desk, which is especially adapted for use in schools, permitting such adjustments of the chair and desk so as to insure the correct hygienic position ot the pupil before the desk, thereby preventing many deformities and causes of ill health Which are the result of an incorrect posture.

Having thus described our invention, what We ela-im as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A desk includingI a pair oi' end frames each having a vertically disposed slot therein, a desk-top having extensions slidably engagingsaid slot-s, a rack carried by said desk-top, a shaft rotatably mounted in said Vtrames, a gear mounted on said shaft, a ratchet Wheel on said shaft adjacent one end thereof, a vpanl pivotally secured to one of said trarne members and engaging said ratchet Wheel, a backboard carried by said desktop and extending to the outer surfaces of said irame members, rearcastings spaced from said frame members, and means securing' said rear castings to said frame menibers and binding said back-board of the desk.
