DISPLAY DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern: r
Be it-known thatI, MARY M. TTAMMOND? a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City,'in the county of Jackson and State of Miss-ouri, have invented a cert-ai new and useful Improvement in Display Devices. ofwhichthe .iollowing is a specification. r
My invention relates to improvements,in display devicesi 1 It is particularly well adapted for useas an advertising device to be employed in a box containing samples of. goods.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a; novel display "device which is cheap to manufacture, whichmay be easily manufactured and which is autoumitic in its-action upon the opening and closingof the receptacle to which it is'aliixed. -A further object of my invention is to provide a display.devicewhich will occupy small. space in the box to which itis at tached, and which will attractively display advertisements or other devices, amlwhich will not injure the goods carried by the box to. which the display device is attached.
The no el features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the preferred embodimentof invention, and a modification thereof,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of abox provided withmy improvement in the preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. 2 is a reduced cross section of the same, the cover being shown in solid lines in the closed position, and in dotted lines in the open position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the resilient member and display member.
Fig. 4e is a perspective view of a modification of my invention shown applied to a receptacle, a part of which is shown.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates an. ordinary box having a cover 2 hinged thereto.
3 designates a U-shaped member, the horizontal or transverse portion of which is mounted upon the upper edge of one side 4-. of the box 1, which is next adjacent to the cover 2, and to which the latter is hinged.
The transverse portion of the member 3 is provided with a downwardly extending arm 5 which is rigidly held against the inner side of the side i in any suitable manspecifiliation of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 1 1917. Serial No. 151,671.
ner, as by a strip of suitable material 6 glued or otherwise fastened to the side i and extending over the arm 5.
The transverse portion of the member 3 is 'pivotally-held in position on the upper edge of the side i in any suitable manner, as by strips 7', of suitable material which embrace opposite sides of the side i, and which pass over the transverse portion of the member 3.
A display member, preferably compris ingastrip 8 of flexible material, such as a ribbon has itsends secured respectively to the upper ends of the arms of the U-shaped resilient member 3.
Preferably the arms to which the display member 8 is secured normally diverge upwardly, and are retained in the vertical position by the member 8, which is thereby held tightly stretched.
Additional bearings 9 for the horizontal portion of themeinber 3 may be provided at iopposite sides of and adjacent to the downwardly extending arm 5, said bearing members being secured to the side .4.
The display member 8 may be used to display advertising matter, or it may dis play matter relating to goods contained in the box 1.
The lengthofthc arms carrying the display member 8 is less than the interior width of the box, so that when the arms arein the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2, they will not strike the side of the box opposite to the side to which the mcn'lber is secured.
When the cover 2 is swung to the open position shown in Fig. 1, the resiliency of the member 3 will cause the arms carrying the member 8 to assume a vertical position, thereby permitting free access to the interior of the box and presenting the display matter on the member 8 prominently tothe eye.
When the cover 2 is swung to the closed position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, it will engage the arms carrying the display member 8 and will swing them to the horizontal position, shown in solid lines in Fig.
As the wire member 8 is of spring material, those parts of it resting on the upper edge ofthe box between the bend 5 and the side arms will be subjected to torsion when the. arms are swung from the vertical position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in solid lines in Fig. 1, to the positionshown in solid lines in Fig. 2, the resiliency of the material permitting such flexing of the WII'G.
The member 8 is preferably made of flexible material so that it will not injure any articles which may be contained in the box, when the member 8 is held in the horizontal position.
Preferably the member 3 is sufficiently weak tolpermit of its being held by the weight of the cover 2 in thehorizontal position. I 1
It may, however, have strength suflicient to force the cover 2 to the upright position. In that case, any suitable releasable means, such as catch 9, maybe employed to hold the cover in closed position.
In the modified form shown in Fig; 4, a resilient member, preferably a piece of spring wire has a horizontal portion 10, mounted upon the upper edge of one side 4:
of a box to which the portion 10 is secured by a strip of suitable material 11, which extends over the portion 10 and is pasted or otherwise secured to the inner and outer sides of the side I.
At one end of the portion 10 is a down wardly extending arm 12, which is secured by the strip 11 to the inner side of the side 4.
At the other end of the portion 10 is a vertically extending arm 18, which at its upper end is provided with a horizontal arm 14- which extends through and supports a display member 15, which may carry advertising or other matter. The member 15 may be a strip of suitable material doubled over the arm 1 1, with its adjacent sides se cured to each other. The arm 14: may be provided with a bend 16 which is embraced by the member 15 and which prevents the latter from turning on the arm 14. v
A display member 17 similar to the member 15 may embrace the arm 13 and be supported thereby. The arm 13 may be provided with a bend 18 which is embraced by the member 17 and holds the latter from turning on the arm 13.
The operation of the form of my invention shown in Fig. 4; is the same as that shown in Fig. -1. The arm 13 normally stands erect and is adapted to be swung to the horizontal position by a cover, not shown, hinged to the side 4 in the manner of the cover 2. V 7
While I have illustrated my invention as applied to a box, it is obvious that it is applicable to other applications, wherein two members are arranged so as to be adapted for movement one relatively to the other, such as doors, drawers, etc.
I have shown the resilient member which carries the display member mounted upon one side oi a box, but my invention is not restricted to such an arrangement. I
Various modifications oi my invention may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is In a display device, a box, a cover hinged thereto, a resilient U-shaped member, the
transverse portion, which connects its two arms, being rovided with a downwardly extendingarm secured to one side of said box, the upwardly extending arms being adapted to be engaged and swung by the cover from a normally upright to a horizontal position, and a display member carried by said upwardly extending arms and adapted to be held stretched by the tension of said arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
