GUN -SIGHT.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and useful Gun-Sight, of which the following is a specification.

The subject of this invention is a gun sight wherein a hood mounted upon a gun barrel or the like is adapted to receive and hold various types of sight disks.

The main object of the, invention is to provide improved means of holding the disks.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for raising and lowering the disk with respect to the gun barrel.

A still further object within the contemplation of the invention is the production of a simple, durable and efficient gun sight.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

One practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a sight constructed in accordance with the invention, a fragment of a rifle barrel to which the same is shown attached being in elevation with a portion broken away;

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sight detached;

Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the sight;

Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the disk holder and a disk in place;

Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the disk holder;

Fig. 6 is a plan View of the same;

Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are views in elevation of different forms of disks.

barrel, has a dovetail groove 2 formed in its upper face. The groove 2 is adapted to receive a dovetail rib 3 formed transversely of an arm 4:.

The arm 4 overlies and extends longitudinally of the gun barrel 1 and carries, at its forward end, the upstanding hood 5. A slot 6 extends for a short distance longitudinally of the arm 4 and partially underlies and extends rearwardly of the hood 5. The slot 6 is adapted to slidably receive the lower edge or base of a wedge shaped rack 7, the upper slanting edge of which is provided with a series of notches for the purpose of adjusting the hood 5 vertically with respect to the gun barrel.

A transverse slot 9 extends upwardly from the base of the hood 5 and intersects the slot 6. This slot serves to detachably receive a sight disk holder 10. The disk holder 10 consists of a formed plate provided with a notch 11 in its lower edge for the reception of the rack 7. The holder 10 also has formed in one face thereof a groove 12 the edges of which are undercut to receive the beveled edges of the sight disks. A countersunk screw 13 is threaded into the holder adjacent one edge of the groove 12 for the purpose of looking a sight disk firmly in place in the holder.

The sight disks, forms of which are shown at 14, 15 and 16, are reversible and are formed with sight notches or openings in their upper and lower edges to provide a variety of forms of sight.

It is thought that the operation of the device will be amply understood from the foregoing description without a further detailed explanation thereof.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is

In combination with a gun barrel having a groove in the upper surface thereof, a gun sight including an arm positioned in the groove, said arm having a slot formed adjacent one end thereof, a circular hood formed at one extremity of the arm, said hood having a notch in the lower portion thereof, and a transverse slot extending upwardly from the notch, a sight disk adapted to be held within the transverse slot of the hood, said sight disk having a notch adapted to register With the notch of the hood, the ends of said sight disk extending beyond the outer edges of the hood, and means adapted to operate in the registering notches for adjusting the arm and sight disk Vertically With relation to the gun barrel.
