Description

J. ROS SINI.
HEAD BLOCK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.2. I9l9- 1,324,271. Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
INVENTOR. BY Jvshwa jPasse'na' ATTORNEY.
JOSHUA ROSSINI, 0F OLYPI-IANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEAD-BLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919..
Application filed August 2, 1919. Serial No. 314,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA Rossini, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olyphant, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania have invented new and useful Improvements in Head- Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for preventing cars from running down inclined parts of a track and the principal object of the invention is to provide a member provided with clamping means for engaging the rail and adapted to be struck by the wheel of the car to hold the car against further movement. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the action of the wheel striking the device will serve to make the gripping members of the device clamp the rail more firmly.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to. the accompanying drawings wherein like, characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout theseveral views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention;
Fig. 2. is an enlarged view of the device itself;
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. l is a detailed view with parts in section.
In these views 1 indicates the track and 2 indicates a car the wheels 3 of which engage the track. 4: indicates my improved device which is adapted to be clamped on the rail of the track to engage the wheel of the car to prevent the car from running down the incline. The device consists of the two members 5 which are each provided with the barrel portions 6, of a hinge, inter mediate their top and bottom edges. A pin 7 passes through the barrels to hinge the two parts together. The lower portions of the members are grooved as at 8, to provide thejaws 9 for gripping the rail. The upper portions of the members are provided with extensions 10 at one end thereof and said extensions are provided with holes to receive a pin 11 which also passes through a hole in a lug 12 formed on the bottom of the wedge block 13. This wedge block extends between the members and its hinged end extends beyond the extensions 10 and is curved as at l i to receive the tread of the wheel. The other end of the wedge block is provided with a finger piece 15 and a hole 16 which adapted to receive a rod or the end of a pick or other tool to move the block from between the members when the operator cannot move said block with his hand.
The device is placed on the rail and clamped thereon by pushing the wedge block between the members. When the curved end of the block is struck by the wheel the blow will force the block down wardly and thus cause the jaws to grip the rail more firmly.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and'in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair .of jaw members, hingedly connected together, a wedge block located between the jaws and pivoted thereto and having a face adapted to be struck by the wheel. V
2. A devicerof the class described comprising a pair of jaw members hingedly secured together, a wedge block hingedlv connected to the members and adapted to liebetween the upper portions of said members, said block having an end face adapted to be struck by the wheel and means at the other end of the block for permitting the block to be removed from between the JOSHUA ROSSINI.
