Description
M. J. REID.
GARMENT HANGER.
APPLICATION FILE EPT. 25. 1919. I 1,324,209. Patented Dec. 9,1919.
' UNITED STATES, PATENT -MOS ES JOSHUA REID, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, Asslenoa, 13v MESNE AssIGnMENTs-"ro M. s. DEAN, TRUSTEE, or CHICAGO,'ILLINOI S.
GARME T-HANGE Application filed July 27, 1914, Serial No. 853,315.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Moses J osnua REID,
a subject of Great Britain, and resident of which is also adapted and is also adaptablefor ladies waists, suits and cloaks, and which heretofore have been separately made,
that is to say'a separate device on which to hang the coat and vest, and for the trousers, the. former consisting of a curved or angular arm and a suspending hook secured at the apex thereof, and the latter of opposing straight jaws secured to the ends of a U-shaped spring, terminating at its upper end in a hook, a loop surrounding the jaws serving to actuate and hold them in their operative position for clamping a pair of trousers. Y
The prime object of my invention is a single structure, containing both a hanger for a coat and vest, and sustaining a pair of clamping jaws, from which to suspend a pair of trousers, and which is also adaptable on the one hand for suspendingwomens waists and for clamping andsuspending a skirt, and in both instances in such relation.
that the one will not interfere with or 0bstruct the other, and that either 'may beseparately detached without the other.
A further object of my invention is a garment hanger of the character above described, of minimum lightness and cheapness of construction, consistent with maximum strength and durability and with the several parts so constructed and arranged that they may be assembled in the presence of but little skill and experience.
With these ends in view, my invention 'elty in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts by which the said objects and certain other objects are attained,
all as hereinafter fully described with -refer ence to the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In said drawing: Figure 1 illustrates in front elevation a Specificationof Letters Patent.
Renewed September 25, 1919'. Serial Np. 326,386.,
=-garment hanger in operative position, in
which my invention finds embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the l1ne-2-2 otFig. 1 looking 1n the direct on of the =arrows.
Fig. 3 isan enlarged detail longitudinal section more clearly showing the formation of the grooves for containing the wires or Patented Dec. 9,1919.
rods constituting the hanger hook, and
forming the springs actuating the clamping j aws of the trouser holder, and
Fig. l is a transverse section of the line 4-l of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.-
Similar characters of reference indicatethe same parts in the several figures of the drawing. a
5 indicates a shoulder piece for a coat and vest, and may be for a ladys waist, prefer ably composed of wood, but may be of other material, of the usual form, or any form best adapted for its purposes, made in sections 6 and 7 the adjacent end of one of whichsections 7, is provided at. its end adjacent the section 6, with a vertical groove 8, the width of which is twicethat of the diameter of the shank 9' of the suspending hook 10, which shank and book are preferably of wire, which may be bent to form the hook 10, and at the lowerend of the shank may be bent to a right angle to form a latch 11.
the shank'9 and latcl. 11 may be projected throu h and inwardl beyond the holders, a sufli cient distance or, straddling it with spring jaws 13 and 14 preferably bent from a single piece of wire as shown in thedraw-- ing.
Spring'jaws '13 and 14 have sleeved on their free. ends rectangular clamping jaws finds embodiment in certain features of nov- 5' 15 and 16, respectively secured-against d'etachment by bending the end of the wires "13 and 14 as indicated at 1717 in Figs.
the lower end of'the groove 8 the-walls of the groove are cut away as indicated at 19, and that opposing this cut away portion there is a recess 20 formed in the opposing member, with the several parts constructed and in the position last described, the hook is pulled outwardly until the latch has pulled the spring jaws into and between the .slots19 and 20 as shown in Fig. 3, and
thereby confined the bend in the"s] ring jaws between the opposing walls of the members 6 and 7 forming the coat hanger, following which a wedge 21 is driven 1nto the'upper end of the slot, and as a result 0: which the shank'is forced against the botto'ni wall of its groove and the slot closed.
With the spring jaws suspended in this manner from the latch 'on the hook shank, there is a suflicient lateral opening in the opposing members' of the coat hanger not only for the introduction of the springjaws, but if desired for a swinging movement 01 those jaws, and of the articles suspended therefrom for convenience forv inserting and removing a pair of trousers or other articles therefrom.
. The shanks 13 and 14: of the jaws 15 normally maintain the jaws open, a ring 22,
however, slidable up on the shanks 13 and :14 operating-in the usual manner to close and 1 lock the jaws in theirw. operative position. r v
The mainpurpose of the wedge 21 is to close the otherwise exposed upper end of the slot'and its-africtional tightening therefore need only be suflicient to prevent the shank 9 from wabblin and the accidental detach-- ment of the spring jaws when the hanger is not suspended from its hook, for as will be seenwithtlie hanger suspended the gravity of the coat hanger even without the added weight of the garment would maintain both the hookll and the trouser hanger in their operative position. It will now be observedthat the construction herein shown and described provides ;for combining in one artlcle a shoul er piece for coats and waists and a spring jaw clamp for trousers or skirts, as may be, sus ended and clear of the shoulder piece an with clamping jaws both ofwhich-may be moved .to an open position the one away from the other and thereby providing for an unlim ited space between the jaws, one of which is movable and that the wire of the same gage may be successfully used as a suspensory means from the hook there from of bothshoulderpiece and the clamping jaws Furthermore, that there is at the same time provided a concealed hinge connection between the shank of the hook and the shank of the wire from which the spring jaws are formed, the-strength of whigh hinged joints has' a strength substantially asgreat for suspending a given: weight as are the wires from whichit is formed at another point.
In short, my invention provides for the construction of a duplex hanger of minimum rigidly secured together in contact with each other, the end of-one of which sections is provided with a groove ter'minatingat one end in an enlarged chamber oflset from the groove to form a shoulder, a sus ending hook for the shoulder piece, thes ank of which passes through the groove and terminates in a latch occupying saidchamber, a
-wedge tightening the hook in the shoulder piece, and a pair of clamping jaws provided with U shaped yielding shanks suspended from the latch in the path of said shoulder. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my handand alfixed my seal, this ,17 th day of July, vA. D. 1914'. g
