Description

(1. H NOWAC!- HERMETICALLY SEALED BOX.
APPLICATION FILE-D OCT. 23, IBIS 1,324,207; Patented Dc-c. 9,1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. NOWAGK, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, 1\T Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
HERMETICALLY-SEALED BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 2a, 1915. Serial No. 57,464.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. N owaon, residing in Oak Park, in the county of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hermetically-Sealed Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to hermetically sealed boxes for the packaging of various products and has particular reference to boxes of sheet metal provided for this purpose.
' after serve as a closure for the A principal object of thisinvention is the provision of a metal ortin box sealed at the end or side through which access is to be had .to the interior together with a cover which may be readily mani ulated to cut the seal from the end of thebolig and there- A particular object of the invention is to provide a cover having an efiicient cutter provided without the addition of any extra members or parts and also without the addition of. any material to provide the cutter. Boxes of this character are sold to the packer in extremely large quantities and the construction of any cuttin members and the fastening of, such mem ers; after construction in place, while not costing appreciably inthe construction of each individual box, amounts to considerable in the aggregate.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from when considered in connection with the. ac-
compan in 'drawin illustratin a pre-' y g g g ferred embodiment thereof.
On. the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken vertically through the box and illustrating the method of forming the cutter;
Fig. is a similar view showingthe cover in cutting position;
Fig. 4 1s a bottom partial view on a somewhat enlarged scale of the cover; and
Fig. 5 is a similar 'view showing the position of the cutter before being bent to final arrangement.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown on the drawing a box.
consisting of a body A and a cover B. This body A is formed, in the present instance. of a bottom 6 and a cylindrical side wall 7 packed andsealed b Y the following description:
terlocked seam 10 holding the seal 9 against an inwardly extending shoulder 11 which is formed by depressing the cylindrical side Patented Dec. 9,1919;
wall 7 circumferentially at an appropriate height. The cover B is of sheet metal and the box body and the seal may be made also of metal or of any other rial. The cover is provided with an integral downwardly extendin cutter or cutting lip 12. This cutter is ormed by making. a V-shaped cut 13 in the and then bending the part set 01f downwardly to the position indicated on the drawing and so that it extends vertically when the box rests upon its bottom. The body 14 of the cover is preferably depressed to provide a raised circumferential part 15 adapted to fit over the seam 10, and the cover has, in the present instance, a downwardl extending circumferential flange 16 loose y fitting the outside of the box body.
When so constructed the box may be securing in place the seal 9 and merely placing, the cover over the end thus closed. It may be opened by merely pressing down upon the cover to force the cutter 12 into the seal and then rotating the cover about the body to cut out substantially the entire seal and give almost a full opening to permit removal of the contents.
The cover is rial than the seal or of material harder than the seal in order to facilitate the o eration of the cutter. However, the V-s ape of the cutter will cause it to operate effectively upon material having a wide range of qualities by reason of the fact that the cuttlng'surface presented to the seal, after the cutter has been inserted in the material, is inclined at an oblique angle'to the plane of the material cut, thereby increasin the resistive properties of the cover an increasing also the frangible quality of the seal.
stood. from the foregoing description, and
it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts'without departing 1 from the spirit-and scope of the invention appropriate mate-- body 14 of the cover preferably of heavier mateor sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
1. claim: v 1. A box comprising a body the Wall of which near the mouth of the box is bent .inward to confine the seal on said shoulder,
and a rotatable cover having a knife arranged near the inner edge of said shoulder.
2. A box comprising a body the wall of which near the mouth of the box is bent inward to fornra seal-supporting shoulder, and a seal the margin of which is interfolded with the inwardly bent edge of the body to form a seam which secures the margin of the seal and confines the seal down against said shoulder,. the seal being adapted to be out by a knife operating near said shoulder.
3. Abox comprising; a body the side of which near the mouth of the box is turned inward and thence outward toform an inwardly extending shoulder and thence upward, a frangible sheet seal supported on said shoulder and having its margin interseamed with the top margin 0i said body, and a cover fitting and rotatable on the box body and having a cutter blade located'to operate on said seal near the inner margin of'said inwardly extending shoulder.
a. A box comprising a body, a frangible sheet seal having. its margin attached to-the margin of the mouth of said body, a cover fitting and rotatable on the body and having a depending cutter blade, and a support for the outer part of said seal carried by said body and extending inward close to the line of operation of said blade.
