E1 sra rns onoaenwsrnoor, on nnw sarram, CGNNEGTICUT, ,assleivoarornn NORTH ;& JUIDD JVIANUFAC'lUIlEtIIiI'Gr COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN,,.CONNECTICUT, A GORPORATIONOF CONNECTICUT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE V. Tnoor, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'NmvBritain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of
"for instance in connectionwith a belt to hold the same-closed. \Nhile as will be in ferred the belt equipped with the buckle is primarily intended for human wear, I am in no sense restricted in this particular, be cause it can be employed in the art of harness and in' other ways. Among the primary objects of-the invention is the provision of a buckle which can be easily and inexpensively made and which has means of a positive and certain character for securely preventing accidental movementof the cooperating belt yersely of itself, so thatlin 'efiect the-active with respect to the buckle.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification I have shown in detail one convenient form of embodiment of the invention which to enable those skilled in the art to practise the invention will be set forth fully in the following description. I am not necessarily restricted to this particular disclosure; I may depart therefrom inseveral respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claim following said description.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a face view of a belt equipped with a buckle involving the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation,
Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and
Fig. 4t an inside face view of the same.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
As will be clear the buckle may be utilized in a variety of different ways, for in,- stance as shown in connection with a belt such as 2. Associated with this belt, band or strap 2 is a buckle such as that denoted in a general way by 3. The belt or strap may be made of any suitable material such as leather, while the buckle can I find be advantageously made from sheet metal stock.
The buckle includes in its structure a body piece or section such as that denoted in a general way by 4:. This body piece or section in turn comprises asomewhat elon- BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 20, 1918. Serial No. 250,650.
gated foundation portion 5 longitudinally arched, the concave surface being on the inner side and the convex on the outer side.
The lateral parts of this foundation portion 5 are provided with longitudinal flanges 6 in p rallelism with each other and integral as shown with the foundation portion 5.
i The said side flanges 6 in turn are provided practically centrally of their length-with the inwardly extending-ears or' lugs 7 having perforations as 8 which provides for the flexible mounting of a clamping or'tongue I unembersuch as thatdenoted in a general way'by 9. Y
The clamping ortongue memlber may within certain respects vary, although that shown and now to bedescribed answers my 'main or mounting portion as 10- which is practically fiat and a clamping portion 11 which is'somewhat arched or bowed transsurface of the clamping or binding portion can really functlon as a cam. This clamping or binding portion 11 as shown is mounted with the main or mounting portion 10 by a bowed connecting portion 12.
from which as will be clear the said clamping or tongue member can be easily and quickly made in one piece. As shown the main or mounting portion 10 has on OPPO. site ends between its inner and outer extremes, the coincident lateral extensions or pivots 13, which although they are of rectangular shape, enter the circular openings or perforations 8 to which I have already referred. The width of these lateral extensions or pivots 13 is a trifle less than-the diameter of said openings or perforations, so as to provide for the necessary turning movement of the clamping or tongue memher 9. This clamping or tongue member can be obviously formed by doubling sheet stock on itself in such way as to secure the necessary finished article. As a matter of fact the tongue member itself can be blanked as to all its portions from sheet stock. The clamping or binding portion 11 of the tongue member is peripherally roughened as at 14:, in view of which said active portion can obtain a substantial hold upon a belt or strap such as 2 in the manner I will hereinafter describe.
Gne end of the belt or strap is relatively curing the permanent connection.
permanently connected with the buckle 3, the other end being capable of separable or detachable association therewith in the man- 'ner' which I will hereinafter describe. I
will now set forth the means shown fog1 seonnected with one end of the belt or strap 2 is a terminal as 1-5 which may be of sheet metal. This terminal has at its forward portion the eye 16 adapted to flexibly fit v 7 around the pivot 17 at the-rear of the main or mounting portion 10. In view of this circumstance it will be clear that the terminal 15 and the clamping or tongue member 9 canbe freely moved with respect to each other. 1
It'will be supposed that the parts, except the free end of th belt or strap are ,connected up as shown in the several views, and that the clamping member or tongue 9 is in its releasing position. When in this position it stands practically at right angles to thefoundation portion of the buckle. In view'of this circumstance it becomes a F simple matter to slip the freeportion of J the belt or strap alongthe inner surface of the foundation portion 5 between the flanges 6 thereof. Wlien this is done the two endportions of the strap will be relai tively moved oppositely and on such motion {the terminal will be moved relatiVelyto: ward the. left or outwardly, and will as a consequence swingthe rear part of the main or mounting portion 10 toward the foundation portion 5, in view "of which circumstance the clamping, binding or cam portion 11 will bite into the free; end portion of the strap or belt and will press the same sub stantially against the foundation portion 5,
the greater the pullv the greater being :the
pressure ofthe clamping portionupon the free end portion of the strap.
What I claim is:
A buckle comprising ,a body having a foundation Jiece furnished with side flanges" to receiveetween them a strap; a sheet metal member liaving a fiat mountingv portion and a transversely bowed cam portion bowed cam portion'forming a continuation of th mounting-"portion and its rear end being adjacent to the rear end of the mount ing portion, the mounting portion being integral with the mounting portion the p provided with lateral integral ,pivots an'd the flanges being provided with earshaving openings to receive the respective pivots,
the cam portion being roughened and en
